The Soul Piece by [livejournal.com profile] cloudyjenn. SPN, eventual Dean/Cas, currently at ~130000 words words, rating R, canon-compliant.
Summary: When a human child is born, their soul is shattered into bright gleaming pieces that scatter to the winds.

This is one *those*. The one that grip you tight and make you quite unable to concentrate on anything else, the one that make you feel that you're inside that story, living and breathing their lives. This is totally my head-canon now, the backstory to Cas and Dean's unique relationship, their profound bond, the story behind Mary's Angels are watching over you, the reason why Dean doesn't believe in angels and Sam does, Dean's resurrection from hell with nary a scar, that handprint, Jimmy Novak and his daughter Claire, oh I could go on and on and on!

While the whole story is still a WIP, the first two parts are complete on their own. Part One is from when Dean was a baby to Sam being born ( Sam's soul meeting Cas's grace and wee!Dean's reaction to that omg that was brilliant ) to that fateful night in November 1983 ( fluff and sweetness and angst in abundance ). Part Two is adult Dean, the time when Cas was ( seemingly ) absent from Dean's life to Cas's thrilling and dramatic rescue of Dean from hell and the sweet, sweet healing that took place after that. And Part Three is the events that took place in Lazarus Rising onwards.

Read it now if you hadn't already. It's awesome, it's brilliant, it's amazing.

Following the trail once more, Castiel flutters down in front of one box in particular. The child laying in it is similar to the others in the room, but Castiel instantly sees how this child will always be different to him. The soul piece in his arms shudders in proximity to its original master. To Castiel, it feels akin to the love he holds for his Father, but again, there is something different. Something he's never experienced before and therefore can't identify. But it is pleasant.

Want a really good laugh that is underlined by real angst with some fluff? Then read this.

Desolation In Greenish Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] sameuspegasus. SPN, Dean/Cas but gen ( as the author put it, no funny business on screen ), PG, 2085 words.

Summary: Cas vents his angst through poetry. Then so does everyone else.

Sam's POV, post purgatory. This is them writing about their feelings through poetry. Bad poetry. I laughed then I cried. For all of them.

I'm bookmarking the fics from the [livejournal.com profile] dc_summerlovin challenge like crazy because each summary had me quivering with happiness and anticipation but oh dear, how I wish that they don't have the 2000 word limit because 2000 words are just not enough.

Fics like this for instance, which need to be at least 20,000 word long. Longer!

Tomorrow by [livejournal.com profile] twoskeletons. SPN, Dean/Cas, End!verse, R, 2000 words ( only )
Summary: Dean and Cas take a break from searching for this Camp Chitaqua they've heard so much about.

Desperate and bleak ( this is the End!verse after all ) but oh, so very, very good. I read it slowly, savouring each line, wanting it to last longer. A wonderful read!

The Summer Holds A Song ( We Might Sing Forever ) and its sequel, Sand in Your Pockets and Nothing on Your Mind by [livejournal.com profile] annundriel. SPN, Dean/Cas AU, NC-17, 11000 and 4500 words.

Summary: When Castiel rents John Winchester's beach house for the summer, all he's looking for is a quiet place to write. From the moment he lays eyes on John's teenage son, he knows his chances of staying free from distraction are nil.

An absolutely delicious AU that's so sensual and so erotic that it completely blew me away. Castiel's summer of sweet, sweet love.

A couple of delightful fics which I've thoroughly enjoyed. Completely different from each other, like, well, ponies and movie stars, but both equally satisfying and happy-making.

Gone With The Wendigo by [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple. SPN, gen, crossover with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, PG-13, 26000 words.

Summary: Sam and Dean go into the New Hampshire wilderness to investigate a new case: whole groups of hikers are getting trapped in freak blizzards and then encased in solid ice. When a blizzard hits them on the trail, they take shelter in a nearby cave for the night, only to awake to find themselves transformed into brightly colored ponies and trapped in a whole new world where zebras speak in rhyme, ponies run apple orchards, good times and positive thinking are encouraged, and friendship? Friendship is magic.

This is crack, but if you've read the author's epic Dimensions and Veticals, you'd know that [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple's cracks are not just cracks. They're cracks with substance and they make you feel and think just as much as they make you laugh. You don't need any prior knowledge of MLP to get this story. I didn't. Knew of MLP I mean. So go on, do read this. You know you want to!

Moonshine Lullaby by [livejournal.com profile] akadougal and [livejournal.com profile] tiptoe39. SPN AU, Dean/Cas, NC17, 38788 words.

Summary: Dean Winchester sweeps up after the stars in 1920s Hollywood. He and the actors on the set are worlds apart -- and that includes his brother, the famous Samuel C. Winchester. But when an accident brings Dean face to face with a matinee idol going by the name of Jimmy Novak, he's caught up in a love story right out of a movie script... until his estranged brother comes back into the picture, bringing drama of his own.

Set in the golden era of Hollywood, this swept me off my feet, totally and completely. Written with parallels to canon cleverly and seamlessly woven into the story - I was enthralled right from the very first paragraph. And it felt like I was holding my breath the entire time I was reading it - for fear of missing a word or a thought - I know, totally silly, but it felt like it, that was how immersed I was in the story. A keeper, this story, one which I'm going to read over and over again.

Close Your Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] sonofabiscuit77. SPN, Sam/Dean AU, NC-17, 52,000 words.

Summary: There are some relationships so taboo they’re irresistible...

So, okay, this fic came with a lot of warnings, but the one thing that jumped out at me was this - the OMC in question is basically Alan Rickman, and I was like omg, Dean and an OMC who's Alan Rickman. That, together with all the other warnings, and I knew right away that this was going to be a train-wreck. And it is, in an emotionally-gripping, heart-breaking, totally GOOD and satisfying way. In other words, fasten your seat-belt. Tight.

Walk a mile by [livejournal.com profile] cloudy_fic. SPN, Dean/Cas, genderswap, 13400 words, NC-17.
Summary: Gabriel's deal is worth saving Bobby's life. Still, being stuck as a woman for three weeks is not Dean's idea of a good time.

This goes from extremely funny to extremely heartbreaking, extremely hot somewhere in between, and ultimately, a very satisfying ending.

The Flames Of The Sun by [livejournal.com profile] peroxide_fic. SPN, Sam with some Dean/Cas though that's not really the point, PG-13, 5530 words. Part of the "where Dean-doesn't-have-to-Sam-does-it-for-him" series.

Summary: The one where Dean doesn’t have to defend his honor because Sam does it for him.

I giggled helplessly throughout this story. Told from Sam's POV, it's about how he perceived Dean, his badass big brother who could totally beat the crap out of 99% of the general population of humans, except perhaps the Shaolin monks. Or Jackie Chan. Or when Dean's big gay angel love is accidentally outed in public right down the middle of Main Street in a town in the middle of bumfuck Nebraska.

They look like they’re working on mustering up enough burning bigotry to storm over to the Winchesters’ table and try to run the three of them out of town in the name of God and decency and the sanctity of marriage or something.

Sam almost feels sorry for them. It’s not like any of them know that the wimpy looking guy in the trench coat probably gets to judge whether or not their eternal souls get into heaven or not from here on out. They probably also have no idea that Cas can explode their heads with a thought if he wants to either.

When the posse starts getting into what Sam recognizes as some sort of hick marching formation, he hastily excuses himself from the table—not like Cas and Dean notice or anything—and goes to intercept.

A fun read!

Ever have that story which you put off reading not because you don't want to read it, but because you want to very, very much? The story that you just know is going to be good and you don't want to read it just yet because you don't want the happy anticipation to end. This is one of those.

The Overflow by [livejournal.com profile] murron. SPN, Dean/Cas, NC-17, 16600 words. 7x16 AU, you know, the one where Dean meets Emmanuel. Only Jonah is so much better than Emmanuel. So much.
Summary: Café owner Tamàs walks his dog near Bockboot reservoir when he stumbles upon a man with no memory. Welcoming the stranger to his home, Tamàs has no idea who he’s dealing with until two FBI agents blow into town.

Off to re-read. And *that* I can't put off.

The Way Back by [livejournal.com profile] rainylemons, SPN, gen rating R, 35971 words, post apocalyspe-that-never-happens, AU after season five.
Summary: Sam and Dean and Cas settling down together. Dean is injured and Sam is not all there after his time in the cage and Cas is no longer an angel. They make it work.

I don't have the words to adequately describe this story. Suffice to say that it has more Moments in it than all of season 6 put together and that I had to pull myself together several times while reading it.

Read omg read!

The Natalie verse by [livejournal.com profile] longsufferingly, J2, AU, a collection of stories, rating ranging from PG-13 to NC-17.
Summary: After their mother dies, Kyle and Natalie move in with their father, whom they haven't seen since their parents divorced six years ago, and his boyfriend, whom they've never seen.

This is such a sweet story, one I enjoyed reading very much. It reminded me a bit of [livejournal.com profile] phaballa's Last Stop: Chicagoland, a story which even after all these years, I still consider one of the best J2s around. And like Chicagoland, Natalie is realistic and down-to-earth, the story of Jensen and Jared, mostly told from the POV of Jensen's daughter from a previous marriage. It was written 3 years ago and I'm guessing that it has been read by most but do go read if you haven't!

You know those stories where Dean has to choose between Cas and Sam? Well, I haven't read any because because that's not my cup of tea, but this? I cried when I read this.

There's a hole in the fabric of my reality by [livejournal.com profile] etrix. SPN, gen, rating PG-13, word count 27000.

It reminded me a little of Fringe and its alternate universes. Sam, at the point of being taken by Lucifer, begged Castiel to save Dean, and Cas did. He brought Dean to an alternate universe where Dean is a high school loser, Sam is his brainiac, nerdy little brother, and Mom and Dad are still alive. Cas thought Dean would be safe there but he thought wrong. The apocalyspe is still on its way and the yellow-eyed demon is still after Sam.

The story is told from Sam's POV and it begins when he opens the front door to a storm-wrecked Dean after Dean has gone missing for a week. Only this Dean is not his Dean, and this Dean is determined to save this Sam when he thought he has failed the other Sam.

My favourite part is the beginning of the story when John and Mary and Sam still do not know that this Dean is not their Dean ( that was a good read! ), and the heartbreaking part when Sam from this universe finally realizes that this Dean wants, needs to go back to his own universe to save his Sam.

It's official. Dean/human!Cas AU is now my favourite Dean/Cas, especially if they're in an established relationship with Dean being all awkward trying to introduce Cas to Sam. I adore [livejournal.com profile] rageprufrock's Asunder to bits and pieces ( have read that at least half a dozen times already ) and now *this*.

New Heaven Over a Brand New Sky by [livejournal.com profile] sullymygoodname. SPN AU, Dean/Cas, Rating M, 16300 words.
Summary : Reconnecting, as Sam has insisted on calling it, with the brother you haven't seen or spoken to in almost four years is somewhat of a… It's awkward as fuck, is what it is.

This story is so made of win! The story is AU but they're still them and the parallels to canon is cleverly and seamlessly weaved into it. Dean's still the big brother who brought Sam up, John is still the absentee father and Sam still walks out on the family to do his own thing. Then he meets Jess and he wants Dean back in his life again, and vice versa, only they don't really know how. And Cas here is still the one who's disowned by his family because of what he is and what he believes in.

A feel-good story!

1. Many, many thanks to Shinta, Jas, Steff and Samena for the lovely blue dragons. It's certainly the Year of the Dragon, eh? ♥♥♥

2. A couple of quick recs. A Sherlock/LOTR crossover brilliantly written by [livejournal.com profile] aussiepeach. Okay, I didn't think I'd ever really get into the fanfic side of the Sherlock fandom. I've read a fic here and there and while I enjoyed them, it was a little like when I started shipping Dean/Cas, I couldn't really get into the non-gen ones because well, angel sex and all. And while Sherlock is not an angel ( he's just on their side ), his ... asexuality made me think of Cas more than once. But just like Dean/Cas, all it took was a good writer to convince me that Sherlock/John, just like Dean/Cas, works.

But still, I don't actively go looking for fics to read but [livejournal.com profile] dreamlittleyo is on my flist and she's one of my favourite writers who wrote some of my favourite stories in the SPN fandom and imagine my delight when I saw her writing Sherlock/John! Such a beautiful, lovely story, this. One that leaves me feeling tingly all over.

Asunder by Rageprufrock. SPN AU, Dean/Cas, rating adult, 23817 words.

Summary: Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

Sam is getting married and Dean is absolutely terrifed of going to the wedding. He hasn't seen Sam in ages, he thought his brother is lost to him forever, but Sam needs him there. So he gets Cas to go with him. Cas the pediatric surgeon whom Dean has a secret crush since forever.

This is not just the story of Dean and Cas finding each other but of Sam and Dean rebuilding their broken relationship. With canon weaving in and out of the story - Sam's drug addiction, Ruby coming between the two brothers ( yes, Sam marries Ruby in this story omg ), Castiel and Dean's different upbringings, Cas being there for Dean when Ruby gets to be too much for Dean - this story is funny and sexy and sweet and angsty and it'll make you laugh and cry and you'll love Sam and Castiel and Dean and the rest, Bobby with his dead vineyard, Ellen with her hellspawn ( that's Jo in Deanspeak ) and the family thinking that Dean is bringing his date to the wedding and they get to see Cas instead of Dean's usual skanks ( in Bobbyspeak ).

Even though this story is an AU, the characters are essentially very much still them. Dean isn't a hunter, he's a social worker who makes parents cry when he put their kids under protective care but he's still the "awkward, somewhat a dick" and Cas is the only person he's ever quiet with. He's still the big brother who blames himself for everything bad that happens to Sam. And Cas, he's not an angel but a surgeon with capable hands that cradle babies and operate on children, hands that Dean love so much and he can still silence Dean with a single look and his Dean.

Anybody here has read and loved this fic? I need to squee about it with someone so very badly!

Ten In One by [livejournal.com profile] smilla02, SPN gen, rating R, 36,000 words.

Summary: A hiker's body is found mauled in the Oregon woods. While investigating, Sam and Dean stumble onto an itinerant sideshow, whose members are the primary target of the same creature killing across the American west. The case alone would be difficult enough, even if Sam and Dean didn't have to deal with the strained consequences of a trip to Hell and back.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang 2008. This story was written a while back ( talk about being late to the party! ) but I've only just found it and what a gem it is. A casefic but not *just* a casefic, it's SamandDean the way it was before, a post season 3 AU where Sam was the one who brought Dean back from hell, broken and damaged and them trying to find their way back together again because Dean was not the only one who needed to be anchored back to reality as Sam with his terrifying powers that he used to save Dean needed to be saved, too. That plus a fantastic casefic made for a very compelling read.

Throughout September – Sam tells him later – he doesn't open his eyes. If someone asked him why he wouldn't know the answer. He is awake. He can assign voices and touches to the people they belong to without any effort: cool and soft – Ellen’s; callused and dry – Bobby’s. So big they entirely cover the expanse of his chest – Sam’s.

The mechanics of the rescue aren't clear, but he retains a clear image, a painted picture, of Sam as he stands tall and straight amid the flames.

Better Than Moonshine by [livejournal.com profile] riyku, J2 AU NC-17, 33,000 words.
Summary: After publishing a few dime store paperbacks and one novel that scored decent critical success, Jensen's in a bit of a rut. He's got an editor breathing down his neck, an overdue novel that needs to be written, and a weeklong workshop to lead on beating writer's block. To top it off, he has a vicarious one-night stand, and now the guy keeps showing up all over the place. It turns out that a little petty larceny, a car crash, and possible blackmail--all in the name of fun--might be exactly what he needs to kick-start his writing again.

Incredible writing, this story made me feel so good with its quite charm and gentle feel to it. A fine, hypnotizing story, one in which we get to take a look into the world of writers and editors and writing, and two men falling in love with each other.

Jensen took his time putting his thoughts together. “You wake up one morning, and you do the same thing that you've done every single day. You drink your coffee and put orange marmalade on your toast and put on your favorite sweatshirt and you call your mother. And then you sit down in your writing spot and something amazing happens. You know it's amazing as it hits the page, and other people think it's amazing and let you know it. So here we are, six months down the line and it's time to do it all over again. Same coffee, same goddamn orange marmalade, and your mom's still happy to hear from you. It's time to write and there's nothing but a blank page staring you down and not a single word comes to mind to fill it up. And you ask yourself what's the difference? What's the difference between now and then?"
