Lost : I'm err, lost.

Does anyone on my flist follow Lost faithfully? I used to love that show ( season 1 was awesome! ) but I stopped watching it after the second season. I've started watching season 5 because I want to see Mark Pellegrino in the finale. But unfortunately I couldn't make head or tail of any of the episodes. I'm currently at episode 7 and most of the time I was pulling my hair out by the roots, I was so frustrated.

My kids are avid fans and they said something about the show having several timelines and that the island can be moved? But judging from their shifty eyes, I suspect that they don't really get it either.

I wonder if someone could please give me a condensed version of season 5? I was thinking of going straight to the finale without watching the rest of the episodes, but minus spoilers from the finale. Anyone? Please?

ETA : Spoilers for Lost season 5 finale in the comments.

I watch Lost and i must admit it's hard to explain what's going on but Jacob played by Mark is the catalyst of every character's life and the reason why they are in the island.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 01:22 am (UTC)(link)
I tried watching another episode last night but fall asleep halfway through. I guess I just have to watch Mark Pellegrino play Jacob and appreciate his acting skills if nothing else, and compare Jacob to Lucifer!

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2009-12-28 01:37 pm (UTC)(link)
There's too much that's happened in the last few seasons to explain it briefly, so I don't blame your kids for leaving things out. I don't think anyone really gets it all at this point, but the fifth season was great. I suggest if you loved the show once, you should try to watch Seasons 3 and 4 in order to properly appreciate Season 5. Honestly, you won't get a whole lot out of the Jacob storyline without that, and everyone else's storyline? No wonder you're pulling your hair out!

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 01:27 am (UTC)(link)
Oh yes, Lost was the number one show for me at that time. Each week I waited for each episode to air with bated breath. It was mainly because of Dom Monaghan that I watched it, he was still very much the hobbit Merry at that time for me. Season 2 was still good for me. I think it was somewhere around the time when Jack, Kate, Sun and the rest got off the island that I begun to lose interest.

There's so MANY storylines!!

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
That's part of the problem, all the many storylines, and all the many new characters!

I originally thought there would be 40-50 characters, survivors of the crash. I figured most of the episodes would revolve around some combination of the main 15-16 characters, and others would come in and out as needed.

Then they brought in the Tailies, and the Others, and now the Freighter Folk and others, and there's almost too many groups to keep track of! There's also a time-travel element.

I have to admit I sort of lost interest somewhere around Seasons 3 and 4, and part of it is because I HATE Jack and Kate, and I'm not overly fond of Sawyer. I don't give a damn about their love triangle, so I was bored with all their backstories and potential love stories, etc. But I stuck with the show, because there are a lot of characters I really like.

At the moment, my favorite characters are Desmond...did he show up in Season 2?...and Daniel Faraday, who I think showed up in Season 4. But there have been so many new characters, others that have died, and some that may possibly be in some other state of existence, so it's really hard to keep up with things. But I think it's worth it to slog through it all. Trying to catch up now with the sixth season, or starting again with the fifth, would probably be incredibly frustrating. My mom gave up a few seasons ago. She can't handle the really complex storylines, or any series with any kind of arc or where you have to keep track of what happened last season! :)

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 04:13 am (UTC)(link)
I like Desmond! He and Penny, yeah, I like that storyline. Daniel Faraday too.

The 6th season has started?

[identity profile] mochness.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 10:37 am (UTC)(link)
Desmond is love! I dressed up as him for my friend's Lost themed party. We gathered to watch the season finale of the last season =D

You could always use Wikipedia. It gives pretty good summaries of seasons, if I remember correctly.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 04:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey there Nora! I just finished watching the finale. Phew! What a cliffhanger that was!

Btw, did you manage to catch any episode of SPN with Mark Pellegrino in it? He played Lucifer, and he was the reason I decided to watch Lost again, and by the look of it, I am going to watch season 6!

[identity profile] mochness.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you're enjoying the show. I think I forgot a LOT =| I've seen the whole thing, but it's been months since I did so.

Nope, I've only seen that one whole episode I told you about, with the tooth fairy guy.

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 02:37 pm (UTC)(link)
The 6th season starts February 2. There is supposedly some significance to the date, which is Groundhog Day here, and there may be a connection with the movie Groundhog Day. I still haven't seen that movie, though it came out years, possibly decades, ago.

I just meant it would be really difficult for anyone to start watching now, without all the backstory. I think it would be incredibly awesome to see this show on DVD from the beginning, especially after it ends, to go back. I bought myself a Christmas present of the first 5 seasons in Blu-Ray. Amazon was selling it for 71% off or something. I'd love to watch it without commercials interrupting the story, and without waiting sixth months or more from the end of one season to the next.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 04:39 pm (UTC)(link)
I just watched the finale. It was awesome! I have no bones with the execution of the show which I thought was excellent, it's just the storyline that I'm having trouble with!

I still have no idea what who where and how Lost is, but Mark Pellegrino was awesome as Jacob. Shades of Lucifer there, eh? Or I suppose it should be Lucifer with shades of Jacob since Pellegrino played Jacob first.

My kid said ( speculated? ) that the Locke who asked Ben to kill Jacob wasn't really Locke but the black-shirted man who was talking to Jacob in the intro of the finale. Is that right?

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 03:04 am (UTC)(link)
Your son's theory sounds right to me, but we don't know for sure yet. There was some truly awesome stuff with Ben and the smoke monster a few episodes before the finale, and some great stuff with the main characters getting back to the island after they thought they were home for good. There's so much wonderful stuff, but most of it hinges on being a payoff of what's come before.

I think everyone has a ton of questions, and I doubt we'll get all the answers, and I'm certain not everyone will be happy with the conclusion of the series, but I'm betting we find out a whole lot we don't know at this point. I don't think there's time to clear up all the mysteries satisfactorily, and I don't know that I want a clear-cut answer to every single question, but they've done a pretty good job of story-telling.

I do like the fact that we get quicker payoff with SPN, without having to wait three or four seasons to find everything out, but it's so cool when you see how things come together. I hope Lost does as good a job, in this last season, as SPN has done so far, in tying things up.

ETA: For instance, how cool was it when we finally found out where/how Dean got the amulet, and why he always wears it? But now, we find out there's even more to it than we thought. We can see why John might have been the one it was intended for. So, did Sam change destiny, or was that particular act of rebellion part of the plan, or maybe one of many possibilities? And where did "Uncle Bobby" get the amulet, and how did he know it was special, and exactly how much did he know about it? I hope we find that out. But one major difference is that SPN has two main characters, and a couple of others key characters, and the rest play a much smaller role. There's more time to focus on mysteries surrounding the Winchesters and those nearest and dearest to them, instead of the Island and its seeming cast of thousands!

If the bombed going off really did its job of getting things back to normal, do you think we're going to see the original cast in the next season?

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 04:48 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, apparently we will! I think it's going to re-set things. I wonder if it means, for instance, that some of them won't be on that particular flight in the first place, because their lives have taken other directions. That would give us a chance to see other sides of the characters, that I'm guessing would be more boring, in their mundane lives.

There will definitely be some familiar faces we haven't seen for a while. I haven't heard a peep about Dom, but some others will be there for sure.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, there're plenty of Dom!girls on my flist and I would have heard about it if Dom were to make a come-back *g*

Unless it's top secret of course.

Boone!!!!!!!!!

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 05:04 am (UTC)(link)
I'm pretty sure he'll be back, if they can work around Vampire Diaries. Didn't like him much on Lost, but I kind of want to see where everyone ends up.

[identity profile] i-o-r-h-a-e-l.livejournal.com 2009-12-28 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
You're not expecting answers from me, right? :D

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Oh but isn't Josh Holloway your other boyfriend?

:D

[identity profile] i-o-r-h-a-e-l.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
N'aww. Never. :D

Btw, I think I remember you asking about the calendar? We got it from the website called www.depok.com.

:D

Heheh. Just kidding! We really printed it out in a small printing place in the town of Depok just outside Jakarta. :D

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
I had a minor crush on him back then, I thought he looked a bit like what I thought young Aragorn would look like :))

Oh you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about the previous calender? Do you remember that one? That was ordered online, wasn't it?

[identity profile] i-o-r-h-a-e-l.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Hehehehe

Yup. The previous one was from multiply.

Haven't watched since season 2...

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
Hee hee. IDK, everyone seemed to have the same perplexed, bewildered expressions permanently etched on their faces, with the possible exception of Sawyer who looked pissed-off most of the time.

Were they filming anywhere near your place? Have you ever encountered any of the cast?

[identity profile] evening-spirit.livejournal.com 2009-12-28 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I had doubts after season two, pulled through season three and I'm glad I did, because I really liked fourth season, and the fifth one was a blast. :) Honestly, it felt as if they really knew where they were going from the very beginning. I think it isn't the case, but it feels like it.

Unfortunately there were new characters and I'm not sure which appeared in what season, so jumping in at season five can be confusing as hell. In short -- one group was stranded in the fifties, before the Incident that resulted in building the Hatch and pressing the Button every 102 minutes (was it really that often or did I mix something up?) Another group were the survivers who left the Island and were in the current timeline (as in 2008/09), but again, I'm not sure if they were rescued at the end of third, or fourth season. And finally, I think, though I'm not sure, there were some people who were in the current show-timeline, which is 2004. But again, I may be wrong.

As for who was where when, I honestly don't remember.

And yes, Island can be moved both in time and in space but the existence of the whole world now hangs in balance because it was not moved the way it should have or maybe that's not the problem at all???

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 01:36 am (UTC)(link)
Stories with different timelines always confuse me. Heck, I was confused with SPN's In The Beginning with the "what ifs" and that was only one episode! Did you watch Star Trek the movie? I was confused with their back-to-the-future/past plot too!

I think there's a glimmer of light for me from your explaination. Thank you!! :)

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 04:45 pm (UTC)(link)
Just watched the finale of season 5. Oh my, Mark Pellegrino was awesome!! And now I can't wait for season 6!

[identity profile] chloe-amethyst.livejournal.com 2009-12-28 09:07 pm (UTC)(link)
Suggest you check Wikipedia. They usually have a synopsis of every episode of every season of a TV show.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 01:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ack! I'm just hoping to get enough for me to *get" Jacob but I guess that would be like watching SPN just for Lucifer only, you wouldn't have any idea what's going on!

[identity profile] munibunny.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 05:15 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, they film at least twice a season at Ezri's school. That's, what? 12 times since s1? I guess the cathedral and the classrooms are suitably creepy enough to transform into anything. In s1 it was the dance studio Shannon was in, and Charlie's hometown. In s2, I think it was Iraq once... Um, it was also the church where Jin and Sun got married, and a college campus (lots of coeds wearing tweed skirts and scarves... poor things, it was 89F that day). I don't know what else because, like I said, I stopped watching the show. We've seen Jin, Sun, Jack, Juliet, Desmond, Charlie, Shannon, er, Sayid, Hurley... Haven't seen Sawyer or Kate.

Okay, that's not completely true, Ezri and I were having lunch one day and sat next to Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan. They were obviously together, playing footsie under the table and holding hands. Ezri must have been 4 or 5 years old, and she dropped her crayon on the floor. Evangeline picked it up for her and then spent the rest of lunch drawing pictures with Ezri on the back of her placemat. It was really sweet.

I met Daniel Day Kim a couple of years ago when our kids were applying to Iolani and Punahou. His son is the same age as Kira, and quite a good looking kid. Anyway, while sitting outside, waiting for our children to finish with their interviews, we had a chat about which school we'd pick if they got into both. Kira ended up at Iolani, but I went to Punahou and I think Kira was mad at me for talking Daniel Day Kim into sending his kid to Punahou instead. LOL

Anyway, when they film at Ezri's school, the trailers take over the parking lot. There are trailers for the actors, wardrobe, props. It's crazy! And they cook outside so the food smells amazing! It really causes problems for the parents who are trying to pick up their kids, though (like me).

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-29 06:05 am (UTC)(link)
That's so cool!! They're practically your neighbours!

Evangeline Lilly and Dominic Monaghan. They were obviously together

There's quite a number of Dom/Elijah shippers on my flist who think that EL and Dom aren't really together together, but from what you saw of them together, I guess that's not true?

ETA : I'm with Kira here. You and Kim could have been in-laws!! :DDDDDD

I enjoyed reading that, even though it's a reply for Layne XP

I watched only Season 1. Lost interest through Season 2 to 5. Eh, they are in Season 5 now? I don't know that. :D

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 02:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Season 6 is coming soon! I'm watching Lost again mainly because of Mark Pellegrino, and I think he was awesome in it. Lost is a great show in terms of acting, directing etc etc except the plot which to me is confusing and frustrating. That's the thing that kept me from fully enjoying the show :/

[identity profile] ala-tariel.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 02:21 pm (UTC)(link)
Too many people in Lost. I tried to focus to one or two, but it's difficult.

[identity profile] lisabellex.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 07:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I wish I could help. Like you, I watched Season 1 avidly at the time, but then my viewing became more sporadic and my interest pretty much evaporated when Dom was written out - although I've felt all along that he would reappear towards the end, in line with my own little theory.

I rather think that I'll acquire the various boxed sets in the sales and watch all the seasons in one fell swoop - the next season is meant to be the last, is it not?

Have you got FlashForward yet, btw?

PS: Hope you've had a lovely Christmas!

*big hugs*

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-12-31 12:09 am (UTC)(link)
You're the second person to recommend Flash Forward! What's the show about?

I've seen the finale of season 5 and from the look of it I think we may get to see some, if not all, of the original cast. Just my speculation, not a spoiler! What's the rumours saying about Dom making a come-back?

[identity profile] lisabellex.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 01:06 am (UTC)(link)
What's the show about? Well, pretty much the entire plant 'blacks out' for a little over two minutes at the same time and during that time mentally 'jump forward' several months into the future, and see where they'll be/what they'll be doing - that is what we're given in episode 1.

I'm hooked already. :) Unfortunately, the show is taking a break over the Christmas period, and I'm not sure when it's due to return.

As to Lost, I'm not sure what the official line is regarding a come-back for Dom, although I seem to recall that it's been hinted at. I've felt for a while that perhaps the island represents some kind of in-between 'no man's land' and you've got to 'die' to leave and return to the 'real world'. If you 'stay alive', you're doomed to remain. Will probably be proven completely wrong!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

*hugs you*

x

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
Flash Forward sounds interesting. The other person who rec'd it said that it was somewhat X-File-ish. I'm think going to dl the 1st episode, maybe today if the connection is good.

Do you want to dl the eps, Liz? I see that the show's already at ep 10.

[identity profile] lisabellex.livejournal.com 2010-01-01 09:11 am (UTC)(link)
No thanks, I don't think I'll dl them - I'll just wait for them to come on TV, which I hope won't be too long now. I'm not sure how many episodes we've seen already - perhaps 7? I've lost track!

I hope you enjoy. Dom makes his debut several episodes in.

:D
