Enforced writing :)

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] illyria_novia's link to Write or Die, I managed to cough up ~300 words in 20 minutes and this is the result. I cheated a bit though. The original, on-the-spot snippet that I did was not quite fit for public posting so I tweaked it here and there. No idea where this is going and concrits are very much appreciated!

Sam and Dean, gen, 300 words.

Dean looks up at the digital clock on the bedside table. It's almost 2 am and he has been tossing and turning in his bed for hours. He shivers and pulls the blanket up to his neck, glancing over at Sam lying on his side in the next bed. He's sleeping; snoring even. The cold doesn't seem to bother him one bit, his bedcovers pooling at his feet. Dean bets that Sam feels like a furnace now. He's tempted to go lie down beside his brother. Steal some of that heat. But he doesn't. Closes his eyes and tries to ignore the cold. The heater's not really working and Dean has given up trying to fix it.

Sam mumbles in his sleep. Dean, please.. Dean looks over at his brother. Sam's lying on his back now, eyes moving erratically behind shuttered lids. He's sweating, the front of his night shirt damp and sticking to his chest.

Dean's about to get up to and shake Sam awake when Sam's next words stops him, Don't leave, Dean, don't leave.

Dean's head falls back on his pillow with a thump. He glances over at the bottles of pills on the dressing table. Red, white, green, blue - he grimaces to himself. Drugs of all kinds. Painkillers, mostly. They can't really afford them but Sam has insisted. Not that they're doing much good.

Sam's whimpering now and there are tears running down his cheeks. Dean sighs and he gets up, gets into bed with Sam.

He gently shakes Sam's shoulders. "Sammy, wake up."

Sam is wide awake almost immediately. He looks up at Dean in alarm. "Dean, what's wrong? You hurting?"

Dean wipes the dampness off Sam's face with the back of his hand. "You were crying in your sleep, Sammy," he says softly.

My problem is I can't think of a proper plot, just scenarios :/

Thank you, dearest!

Thank you, Dian *loves*

What's a write or die? I'm almost afraid to look. :O

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 11:36 am (UTC)(link)
It gives you a time limit to write certain number of words. Supposedly something will happen if you didn't manage to do it. I'm afraid to find out in case it's one of those screaming ghost/banshee things so I chose one of the "gentler" modes :)

[identity profile] dev-earl.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 11:39 am (UTC)(link)
ACK. That's terribly scary. I don't think I will ever do that. :P

What's a gentler mode do? Flick your nose? *g*

p/s. I uploaded that movie, btw, late last night. If you're so inclined. ;)

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 11:44 am (UTC)(link)
LOL no idea since I managed to do mine in time. Go me!

Yes! I saw your post, I tried downloading just now but I'm still having problems with slow downloads :(

[identity profile] dev-earl.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 11:47 am (UTC)(link)
I overthink my writing a lot these days. So I'm not confident I could do that. :/

Haha. Take your time. It won't go anywhere. :)

Have you ever tried Free Download Manager? You can probably search for a free download. It lets you split MF downloads into sections so it goes by quicker.

That's lovely, Laynie. Angsty, and painful, and yet there is such comfort to be had in their whole-heart/body/soul affection for each other. This shines like a tiny little gem lying on a square of black velvet. Sometimes snippets are just gorgeous little snippets that provoke thought and emotion and don't need to do anything more. I would not be opposed to reading more of this, but it is perfect to me just the way it is. Excellent scene that I enjoyed "seeing" very much.

Thank you, darling Wenchie, for the lovely feedback. I had this clear picture in my head of Dean sick and hurting, feeling the cold and unable to sleep yet at the same time wanting to take care of Sam but it's so hard to put all those into words. I'm so glad that I managed to convey that across! Thank you again ♥

[identity profile] mews1945.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 03:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree with BW, this is perfect just as it is. It gives us a very clear picture of them, Dean cold and unable to sleep, Sam sleeping and warm, but as soon as he knows Dean needs him, he's wide awake. There's angst yes, but the love is what comes through most clearly.

Okay to rec this?

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-07-24 04:01 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank you, thank you, thank you dearest Julia. Your words mean a lot to me! And thank you so much for wanting to rec this and yeah, I'm so happy you want to rec it! *hugs*

It's a sad life, but as long as they have each other, right?

Oh God, Angela, it's so hard not to click on the S5 spoilers!!! I heard that they're mostly good?

Write or Die is hard, isn't it? But I love how it forces you to get the words down without thinking. And this came out beautifully, Layne. You know I'm not in that fandom, but I can feel the emotion here so vividly.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2009-07-25 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee, you read this! Thank you, Ellen ♥

That 'Write Or Die' thing, together with this Self-editing (http://community.livejournal.com/spnroundtable/162884.html#cutid1) write-up someone posted a few days ago, it sorta encourage me to write. I guess I didn't really get the "first draft" and "self-editing" thing because I almost always ended up horrified at what I wrote and deleted everything. I mean, I read a lot so I know what is good or what is not, even if I most of the time I can't really tell why it's good/bad! Oh God, I'm rambling, am I not? *head-desk*

Oh, that self-editing post is wonderful, Layne! Thanks! Have you joined [livejournal.com profile] theficklemuse? We haven't been too active lately, but you might want to consider joining it.

Write or Die is great, I think, because you can't psyche yourself out- you just get the words down, and it's really great practice.

We are all our own most severe critics. Your writing is much better than you give yourself credit for!!! Don't be so quick to delete. The best thing to do is put it away and re-read it a little later.
