American Idol

I'm crying right now. Why, why, why?

[identity profile] cairistiona7.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 01:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Kinda crazy, wasn't it? Personally, I was hoping Jacob would be the one to go. I'm really over his whole "lusky stank" thing... that out of control vibrato is like nails on a chalkboard. *shudder*

*spoiler* (although I imagine the entire universe knows now)

I really didn't expect Pia to go home quite so soon, but to be honest, I think the answer to your "why" might be that many, like me, found her a tad boring and predictable (but then I prefer the rougher-edged rockers* more than the pitch perfect Celine Dions, so take that for what it's worth). And I read some blog today that wondered if Hailey's rise in popularity stole votes from Pia (I like Pia way better than Hailey; I'm not feeling Hailey at all).

I feel for Pia, but I predict she'll go on to do very well, just like other early ousters like Daughtry and Jennifer Hudson... and without having to force herself into the often less-than-successful 19 Records' Idol-winner mold.

I have to admit that none of these singers have compelled me to do any actual voting, which surprises me, because at the start of the voting, I figured I'd eventually latch on to one of them like I did David Cook. But that hasn't happened and I'm not entirely sure why.

*Iggy Pop, however, is a rough-edged rocker I could have lived the rest of my life without seeing. He looked like Gollum crossed with the lecherous old man in the nursing home. I was ready to dig my eyes out with a spork.

I WANTED JACOB TO GO HOME TOO

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 02:59 am (UTC)(link)
It's ironic that she got voted off just when she followed the advice of the judges to choose a non-ballad song. And yes, Jennifer Hudson. She was the first person that came to mind, I thought of her rise to stardom to console myself, that you can do it without winning the title.

Aahhh, the magic of David Cook ..

And Iggy sure is something else, isn't he?

I was shocked as well, and Pia was my favorite female contestant, but I only voted for her a couple of times. I've been voting for some of the ones that really impressed me each Wednesday that I didn't think would be getting a lot of votes. So far I've voted for Jacob, Pia, James, and Haley. Each week I keep hoping Paul, Stefano and Casey will go home, because I am NOT impressed with their singing. I keep hoping Jacob will give another fantastic performance like he did with "God Bless the child" but I think he's making some bad song choices, and is getting pretty arrogant. But then again, my one or two votes per night don't compare to the multiple votes of people who vote eleventy times for their favorite.

I was actually hoping for Stefano to go home, he did absolutely nothing for me. So when Ryan sent Jacob back to the couch, I knew already that Pia was going back, since he earlier said that the result would be shocking. Stefano going home wouldn't be shocking.

I'm not into Paul either but I thought he performed well that night, everyone did IMO, except Stefano. Aargh.

Jacob and Pia are among my Top 4 choice!

My favorite (at the moment at least) is James. Paul's voice bugs me, and he's just too quirky for my tastes. A lot of it, for me, is not just the singing, though that's a big part of it. If I don't like someone's personality or attitude, it makes it hard for me to want to see them win. I think Stefano did well on a couple of songs, but I really am beginning to think he's still there because some women think he's cute and don't care if he can sing or not.

I don't think the women have been all that talented this year, but part of it is that there aren't that many female singers I like. I like Haley a lot more than I like Lauren, but neither of them do a lot for me. At least Haley makes some interesting song choices and does pretty well with them.

I just realized, after watching Smallville tonight, why This irritated me so much. It occurred to me tonight it's because she looks too much like Lana Lang, who I never liked.

Who are your other top 2 choices?

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2011-04-11 02:18 am (UTC)(link)
Scotty and Casey. Yeah, I know, you're not into Casey :)

Paul and Haley, while I'm not a fan, I do get it while some people find them interesting. As Steve Tyler said it, Paul is perfectly imperfect, and I guess there're people who dig that Rod Steward thing going for him, and Haley is interesting too. But Stefano? He's just Bland!

At first I thought people were being a little ridiculous about "cute boys" being saved by fans, but I really think that's the case with Stefano. Although...he was in the bottom three, so he's still not getting *that* many votes. Stefano needs to stick with songs he knows, not something he's never heard before and has no connection with, it's obvious he doesn't believe what he's singing. OTOH, I think they have a real limited number of songs to choose from, probably because of licensing fees or something.

There have been times I liked Casey, but his voice just doesn't do it for me. I really wanted to like his version of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" but it just seemed like the wrong kind of song for him. Haley has grown on me, I've really liked some of her performances, but Lauren still bugs. My feelings on Scotty are mixed. I really wish he'd sing something that wasn't country, or wasn't countrified, because I think he's capable of more than one style. I think he'll get a record deal for sure and be very popular as a country artist, but when they said he was going to sing Elvis, I was hoping for one of Elvis's other songs. I wanted to see Scotty rock out.

Let's see what they do with "Music from the Movies" night. I do wish Lauren and Haley would tone down the sexuality of their outfits and song choices. It just comes across really wrong to me.

BTW, Stefano looked so shocked, I'm sure he was expecting it to be him. While I'd like to see James win, I'm fully expecting it to be Scotty.

Scotty's voice slayed me but yeah, I can just imagine what Simon Cowell would have said about him. You know how he's not a fan a country songs lol.

I kind of pitied Stefano, what with the judges and audience's reaction. I want him to go of course, but that was certainly a bad place for him to be in, having to hear what the judges had to say about it being so wrong, Pia being eliminated.

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2011-04-11 02:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I think it was kind of obvious she was one of the judges' favorites. I'm sure he realized they wouldn't be reacting that way about him. But he's got to realize that he's not really giving it his all, right? I mean, they should all be doing their absolute best they can every time, be "in it to win it" as Randy would say, and it seems like several of them are just choosing the wrong song or type or song. I'm not sure how much the producers are actually helping them, but I think they're trying. It seems a bit arrogant of these contestants to say, "Thanks, Mr. Professional, but I think I'll do things my own way instead." Sometimes that works, sometimes it doesn't, but I wonder if they realize just how unique this opportunity really is for a young singer.

I miss Simon Cowell! He said it as it was, he didn't mince his words. The current judges are so nice and I think sometimes it's good to be harsh, you know, to sort of "guide" the viewers' choices.

[identity profile] shadowc44.livejournal.com 2011-04-12 03:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think being nice all the time is that helpful. They need constructive criticism. If they keep hearing how wonderful and beautiful and perfect they are, they're not likely to make any changes or try to improve. What's wrong with saying, "You hit every single note on key, but it didn't seem like you really had a connection with the song, or the audience," or "I could actually feel how passionate you were about that song, but you missed a lot of notes, and sometimes you were so quiet we could barely hear you. Work on that a little bit."

I think Simon went too far sometimes, and no one wants to hear, "Give it up, you shouldn't even try to be a singer. Go back to your job washing dishes." OTOH, at least he usually told people specifically what was wrong.

I cried, too, Layne. ;_; WRONGNESS

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 03:07 am (UTC)(link)
I know, right? How I wish I could vote!!! I'd vote tonnes for Pia. WRONGNESS indeed.

[identity profile] fun-demented.livejournal.com 2011-04-11 05:34 pm (UTC)(link)
well, she just got signed and they're already starting to write for her album!!

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2011-04-11 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh wow, that's fast! I'm so happy for her!!

[identity profile] casey28.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I still can't believe she was voted off. It's crazy! :(

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 03:11 am (UTC)(link)
The minute I heard Ryan said that the result would be shocking, I just knew that one of my 4 favourites would be in the bottom three, and yup, two of them were there ( Jacob and Pia ). The other two are Scotty and Casey. Lorraine and James would be shocking too, but not as upsetting to me but oh, I was so hoping that my favourites would go to the Top 4 :(

[identity profile] leelust.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Now when i watched i have to say i'd bet Jacob or Stefano will be the next elimination but Pia? No way i'd think of her. It's just wrong.

[identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com 2011-04-09 03:12 am (UTC)(link)
She probably should have chosen a ballad! Is there a ballad in the theme for that night I wonder?
