O-kaaay ...
Oct. 4th, 2008 12:32 amSo much love, and yet so much pain, too. And the pain mostly came from Sam's 20 seconds of going out of the room and doing his thing with Ruby, and Castiel's "Sam's not looking for you." That hurt me on so may levels, so many, even more than Dean's man-pain, and that's saying a lot. Thank you, Chloe, what you said make sense, I'm no longer in so much funk now. I think I irritated hubby a little bit just now, with my sighings and all, he kept saying "It's just a story!" and I was like, "Sam and Dean is not just a story. They are -- SamandDean!"
The casting people did a great job this time around. From young!John to young!Mary, Elkins, grandpa Samuel and grandma Deanna ( I thought it so cute that Dean was named after Deanna and Sam after Samuel. I wonder whether Dean's going to tell Sam about that. Heck, I wonder whether Dean's going to tell Sam anything at all! )
Perfect, isn't it? The eyes, the eyebrows, the chin dimple. The only thing is, I wish this John is a bit more tough, he seems so much like a college student, so George McFly, if you know what I mean. But otherwise, perfect. And omg John was a Trekkie!!

Another thing, I thought John's taller than Dean, but this John seems to be shorter? Or is this John still in the growing stage? I may be mistaken of course, but I thought young!John was kind of looking up at Dean.
Shorter John.

Taller John.

Aah, Mary. My first thought was - wrong girl. And I was thinking that since Samantha Smith was not that old, why couldn't they have her playing young!Mary. They could do it with Ian Holmes doing young!Bilbo, why not SS? But I was so wrong. That actress is perfect as young!Mary, the way she talks, her mannerisms, they're all so Mary it's eerie. ( I rhymed! ). And when Dean said Mary was a babe ( "I'm so going to hell. Again." Per-fect line. ), I kept thinking that he so should have said the same thing about John! Dean and Mary, and Dean and John, such perfect chemistry together. Btw, at one time Mary reminded me of Jo, but only for one fleeting moment.

Young Elkins, another great cast.

These two Fathers.

Don't they just remind you of these Fathers?

Dean looking properly disgusted by this.

I wonder whether he'd remember someone else going right there. And just like John here, I really thought grandpa!YED was going to kiss/nuzzle Dean!

Just because.

Dean and Castiel. In bed. Together! *glances at
i_o_r_h_a_e_l*

Hubby : "New wallpaper." Seriously. He really said that!

Nothing to do with the episode per se, but since we're mostly talking about similarities here, I'm still struck by the likeness of Castiel -

- to this man, demon, whatever.

All in all, an awesome episode indeed. I'm still sad by Sam's apparent indifference towards Dean, so different in 'Bedtime Stories' when he stood looking at sleeping Dean before he went out to meet a different demon. Oh Dean - I think I'm going to say a lot of 'Oh Deans' from now on - John asked him to kill Sam, and now it appears that Castiel's asking him to do the same thing. SAVE SAM, DEAN!!!!!
ETA : Dean's leather jacket. That used to be John's. I kept expecting to see young John wearing the very same leather jacket I was kind of disappointed that that didn't happen!

Date: 2008-10-03 05:20 pm (UTC)Jensen Ackles was brilliant in this. It's not a new idea to send a character back in time, but his acting raised this above the ordinary series episode, at least to me. What a shame that acting like his doesn't garner the recognition it deserves.

Date: 2008-10-03 05:41 pm (UTC)I hope Jensen would get some sort of recognition this time around. Three episodes, and he delivered each and every time.

Date: 2008-10-03 05:56 pm (UTC)Anyway, after seeing this episode I think Dean gets his personality from his mother and Sam gets from John, calm and naive.

i was so happy to see that leather jacket on dean and yeah i didnt even think about john not wearing it, that would have been crazy.

Date: 2008-10-03 08:23 pm (UTC)-I love the idea of a tough, yet compassionate Mary. She reminded me so much of young Sam, wanting out of the life, dreaming of normal... Yet, her personality was so much like Dean - quick, intuitive, caring, and, of course, kick ass!
-John as a naive ex-marine was simply wonderful... and heartbreaking, especially since we know where he ends up.
-What I didn't get enough of was whether Mary wanted John because she really loved him or because she wanted to stop hunting. This is probably just my first impression - will surely see it differently when I've watched it again. Her trading John from Sam? Wow. Like, Wow.
-Mitch ROCKED as Grandpa Samuel and as the YED. That scene with him and Dean as priests? Loved it. The only reflection I have is that I sort of liked the myth of John as Hunter extraordinaire... Knowing that the cons and stuff are commonplace among hunters, sort of takes away from John's uniqueness and, thus, the unusual training the boys received.
-Dean, or rather, Jensen, blew me away as always. His confusion, anger, acceptance, defeat, longing... Just. Wow.
-Sam leaving Dean to get in a car with Ruby? Uh oh. Boy, I wouldn't want to be him when Dean finds him...
I'm downloading the ep from iTunes and will watch it again when it's done. Overall, I loved this ep... it jumped through the Mary-arch really fast but, hey, what's important is what they do with it from this point forward.

Date: 2008-10-03 08:44 pm (UTC)Dean is simply nuzzle-able. Hehehe. I guess now is Sam's turn to (look like almost to) nuzzle into him.

Date: 2008-10-03 09:44 pm (UTC)As to the pics of earlier/later - I think they're all remarkably well matched looks-wise. Good casting!
And wasn't Mews' SPN/Family crossover great?

Date: 2008-10-04 02:50 am (UTC)The casting crew hit the jackpot with young John and young Mary - not only they look similar to the original actors, they also sound the same and they could act, too!
Btw, hon, are you back in Bangkok now or are you still in Japan? I'm waiting for some SPN manga from you!!!

Date: 2008-10-04 03:01 am (UTC)My impression was that Mary really did love John. She made that deal, didn't she? Her wanting someone as different from her hunter family played a part too, I guess, but I don't think she's the type to marry someone just for the sake of getting away from her family. Sam loved Jess, didn't he?
Sam leaving Dean to get in a car with Ruby? Uh oh. Boy, I wouldn't want to be him when Dean finds him...
I don't want to be Dean when he finds Sam. i foresee more pain for our boy ... the pain of betrayal for one.
Btw, when Sam left Dean to go with Ruby, was that for a night of hunting ( or whatever ) or was he leaving Dean for good? I didn't see him carrying his duffel, but I don't know, the whole thing seems so -- final to me. It's almost like Sam leaving Dean for college all over again *is heartbroken*

I myself prefer him to smell as himself, no cologne or aftershave or whatever - just pure Dean, his sweat and his man-smell, his musk :))

Date: 2008-10-04 03:32 am (UTC)What's the reaction of your flist? Mine is all good, but I think there're quite a lot who're unhappy with the episode and I heard there were some hard-core Sam's girls who even refused to watch the show - because of no Sam. But I haven't come across any myself.
What's your impression of Sam leaving Dean? I was devastated because there was a look of finality to it, even though I didn't see Sam carrying his duffel. It was like Sam leaving Dean for college all over again - aaaaarghhhhhhhhh!

Date: 2008-10-04 05:14 am (UTC)It's the way Dean looks in that picture. I can see many a fic written from that picture alone, just his face doesn't even have to be about the scene just the look he has. God I'm seriously obsessing about that picture.

/is very impressed.
And Mitch kicked-ass!!! I love Skinner, and I've known about him guest-starring in an episode but I thought it was for ep 4, so that was a very nice surprise indeed. Gosh, I'd DIE if they managed to get Duchovny or Gillian Anderson ...

Date: 2008-10-04 07:00 am (UTC)Mitch was the perfect grandfather, and he reminded me of Sam, especially his nose. ANd Deanna looked very cool, so sad we couldn't get to know either of them and their history.
Meeting any Hunter is fantastic, but finding out Mary was raised as a Hunter just blew me away. O.o

Date: 2008-10-06 11:19 am (UTC)"This also confirms that the mytharc is really “all about Sam” as we’ve heard for the last three years. The story is set up such that Sam is the prize in the middle with the forces of good and evil wanting him for a mysterious endgame and Dean is the one keeping everything at bay, the hero of the hero. *loves Dean* Surprisingly, I’m fine with the lack of Sam in this episode even though my patience about getting into Sam’s head has been waning. The fact Sam was absent didn't negate the fact the episode actually revolved around him almost entirely. In fact, I think it was more powerful because Sam wasn't there. Now Dean has secrets of his own!"
I got the impression that Sam was just leaving to go do a Demon kill with Ruby. It stuck me as defiant more than final, like Sam was determined to continue on the course he has chosen despite his lack of honesty with Dean. And lets not even mention something so horrid as Sam leaving forever AGAIN.

Dave is 6'0 tall.

Hubbies will never understand that. *shakes head* I think I need an icon with that on it.
I think things will get very angsty and scary and tense between the brothers, but they'll still come out as SamandDean in the end.
That guy who looks like Castiel but played the demon son of YED is an actor who co-stars in a series of movies I love about a gay detective in Albany, New York named Donald Strachey (played by Chad Allen) and his husband, Timothy Callahan (played by Sebastian Spence, formerly SPN Demon Guy). What I find amusing is that in the Donald Strachey movies he is so sweet and loving and nerdy but sexy and hates violence--not demon like at all! LOL
Great review and pics. And yes, I think Papa John was taller.

They didn't a tremendous job with the casting in this episode, didn't they? I could not believe how accurate they got both John and Mary - I honestly believed that they could have been younger versions of JDM and Samantha Smith.

I wonder whether they're going to do any other flashback / time travel / alternate reality episode with teen!Sam and teen!Dean this time. Guh, the actors doing them would have a tough act to follow, and I bet there'd be lots of disapproving fans, too.
