The Soul Piece by [livejournal.com profile] cloudyjenn. SPN, eventual Dean/Cas, currently at ~130000 words words, rating R, canon-compliant.
Summary: When a human child is born, their soul is shattered into bright gleaming pieces that scatter to the winds.

This is one *those*. The one that grip you tight and make you quite unable to concentrate on anything else, the one that make you feel that you're inside that story, living and breathing their lives. This is totally my head-canon now, the backstory to Cas and Dean's unique relationship, their profound bond, the story behind Mary's Angels are watching over you, the reason why Dean doesn't believe in angels and Sam does, Dean's resurrection from hell with nary a scar, that handprint, Jimmy Novak and his daughter Claire, oh I could go on and on and on!

While the whole story is still a WIP, the first two parts are complete on their own. Part One is from when Dean was a baby to Sam being born ( Sam's soul meeting Cas's grace and wee!Dean's reaction to that omg that was brilliant ) to that fateful night in November 1983 ( fluff and sweetness and angst in abundance ). Part Two is adult Dean, the time when Cas was ( seemingly ) absent from Dean's life to Cas's thrilling and dramatic rescue of Dean from hell and the sweet, sweet healing that took place after that. And Part Three is the events that took place in Lazarus Rising onwards.

Read it now if you hadn't already. It's awesome, it's brilliant, it's amazing.

Following the trail once more, Castiel flutters down in front of one box in particular. The child laying in it is similar to the others in the room, but Castiel instantly sees how this child will always be different to him. The soul piece in his arms shudders in proximity to its original master. To Castiel, it feels akin to the love he holds for his Father, but again, there is something different. Something he's never experienced before and therefore can't identify. But it is pleasant.

Want a really good laugh that is underlined by real angst with some fluff? Then read this.

Desolation In Greenish Eyes by [livejournal.com profile] sameuspegasus. SPN, Dean/Cas but gen ( as the author put it, no funny business on screen ), PG, 2085 words.

Summary: Cas vents his angst through poetry. Then so does everyone else.

Sam's POV, post purgatory. This is them writing about their feelings through poetry. Bad poetry. I laughed then I cried. For all of them.

A couple of delightful fics which I've thoroughly enjoyed. Completely different from each other, like, well, ponies and movie stars, but both equally satisfying and happy-making.

Gone With The Wendigo by [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple. SPN, gen, crossover with My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, PG-13, 26000 words.

Summary: Sam and Dean go into the New Hampshire wilderness to investigate a new case: whole groups of hikers are getting trapped in freak blizzards and then encased in solid ice. When a blizzard hits them on the trail, they take shelter in a nearby cave for the night, only to awake to find themselves transformed into brightly colored ponies and trapped in a whole new world where zebras speak in rhyme, ponies run apple orchards, good times and positive thinking are encouraged, and friendship? Friendship is magic.

This is crack, but if you've read the author's epic Dimensions and Veticals, you'd know that [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple's cracks are not just cracks. They're cracks with substance and they make you feel and think just as much as they make you laugh. You don't need any prior knowledge of MLP to get this story. I didn't. Knew of MLP I mean. So go on, do read this. You know you want to!

The Way Back by [livejournal.com profile] rainylemons, SPN, gen rating R, 35971 words, post apocalyspe-that-never-happens, AU after season five.
Summary: Sam and Dean and Cas settling down together. Dean is injured and Sam is not all there after his time in the cage and Cas is no longer an angel. They make it work.

I don't have the words to adequately describe this story. Suffice to say that it has more Moments in it than all of season 6 put together and that I had to pull myself together several times while reading it.

Read omg read!

Stupid People by [livejournal.com profile] maychorian. SPN, gen, PG-13, humour, 7000 words.

Summary: Some people are cat people. Some people are dog people. And then there are people like Dean ...

Omg you've just got to read this, if you hadn't already that is. It's clever and it's hilarious and it's absolutely sweet and adorable. You know those stories where Dean has to choose between Cas and Sam? Well, I haven't read any because because that's not my cup of tea, but this? This is that ( well, sort of ) but with absolutely no angst and very, very happy-making and I just want to smoosh all three of them. Go read!

I cried when I read this.

There's a hole in the fabric of my reality by [livejournal.com profile] etrix. SPN, gen, rating PG-13, word count 27000.

It reminded me a little of Fringe and its alternate universes. Sam, at the point of being taken by Lucifer, begged Castiel to save Dean, and Cas did. He brought Dean to an alternate universe where Dean is a high school loser, Sam is his brainiac, nerdy little brother, and Mom and Dad are still alive. Cas thought Dean would be safe there but he thought wrong. The apocalyspe is still on its way and the yellow-eyed demon is still after Sam.

The story is told from Sam's POV and it begins when he opens the front door to a storm-wrecked Dean after Dean has gone missing for a week. Only this Dean is not his Dean, and this Dean is determined to save this Sam when he thought he has failed the other Sam.

My favourite part is the beginning of the story when John and Mary and Sam still do not know that this Dean is not their Dean ( that was a good read! ), and the heartbreaking part when Sam from this universe finally realizes that this Dean wants, needs to go back to his own universe to save his Sam.

1. Many, many thanks to Shinta, Jas, Steff and Samena for the lovely blue dragons. It's certainly the Year of the Dragon, eh? ♥♥♥

2. A couple of quick recs. A Sherlock/LOTR crossover brilliantly written by [livejournal.com profile] aussiepeach. Here, where Frodo first met the Consulting Ranger at the Prancing Inn and its sequel where the Consulting Ranger met the Irene Adler of Lothlorien. Much hilarity ensues and yeah, I'm surprised that none of the Fellowship hadn't punched Sherlock yet lol. Read, read, READ! ( Thank you [livejournal.com profile] frodosweetstuff )

Uhm, Katikat, I don't think you'll have any objection to the casting of Watson here ;D

3. A crossover vid of sorts where House meets Sherlock meets Fortysomething. Or rather where Dr Paul Slippery had migrated to US to become the famous consulting doctor while his son, Rory grew up to be the equally famous ( or equally annoying, depending on whom you ask ) consulting detective.

Here. ( Thank you [livejournal.com profile] katikat for the heads-up! )

Ten In One by [livejournal.com profile] smilla02, SPN gen, rating R, 36,000 words.

Summary: A hiker's body is found mauled in the Oregon woods. While investigating, Sam and Dean stumble onto an itinerant sideshow, whose members are the primary target of the same creature killing across the American west. The case alone would be difficult enough, even if Sam and Dean didn't have to deal with the strained consequences of a trip to Hell and back.

Written for [livejournal.com profile] spn_j2_bigbang 2008. This story was written a while back ( talk about being late to the party! ) but I've only just found it and what a gem it is. A casefic but not *just* a casefic, it's SamandDean the way it was before, a post season 3 AU where Sam was the one who brought Dean back from hell, broken and damaged and them trying to find their way back together again because Dean was not the only one who needed to be anchored back to reality as Sam with his terrifying powers that he used to save Dean needed to be saved, too. That plus a fantastic casefic made for a very compelling read.

Throughout September – Sam tells him later – he doesn't open his eyes. If someone asked him why he wouldn't know the answer. He is awake. He can assign voices and touches to the people they belong to without any effort: cool and soft – Ellen’s; callused and dry – Bobby’s. So big they entirely cover the expanse of his chest – Sam’s.

The mechanics of the rescue aren't clear, but he retains a clear image, a painted picture, of Sam as he stands tall and straight amid the flames.

The Blood Of The Wicked, SPN AU, gen, rating PG-13, ~7900 words. Written for [livejournal.com profile] spn_summergen, author unknown.
Summary: Struggling with the guilt resulting from the accidental death of his father two years ago, FBI profiler Dean Winchester takes on the case of a spree killer who thinks he's on a mission from God. Not even his brother Sam's best attempts to help can prevent him from letting the case consume him until he runs the very real risk of losing himself entirely.

I like reading stories in which you don't have any idea who the authors are. It gives an extra edge to it, not knowing whether it's going to be good or not, and when you find out that it's good, you're scrambling for a re-read. Which was what I found myself doing with this insanely delicious story, reading and re-reading, trying to guess who the author is.

Sam and Dean as FBI agents? Awesome. Castiel as an insane serial killer, killing in the name of God? Brilliant. And there's Ellen and Ash and Bobby, all still very much recognizable as their canon selves. A perfect AU.

The Dead Man In The Lab by [livejournal.com profile] sameuspegasus, SPN/Bones crossover, gen, rating PG, word count approx 50K++

Summary : There's a dead man in Booth's interrogation room and he's having an argument with an angel of the Lord. Also Sam Winchester is back from hell and a little unstable.

A wonderful, profoundly satisfying story with perfect characterizations all around from both fandoms. It's hilarious and suspenseful and immensely thrilling, it made me cheer and root for everyone, from Sam to Dean, to Bones and Booth, Cas, Angela and Hodgins and Daisy but if I had to choose only one, than I have to say that it's Sweets!

It started a little like Bellatemple's The Righteous Man In The Shallow Grave ( which I love too! ), with Dean wreaking havoc and causing overall destruction in Bones' lab and I had a fleeting thought that the story was going to be similar to Bellatemple's but then it veered off into its own, the team from the Jeffersonian teaming up with the Winchesters and Cas to stop a group of satanist cult from raising the Light-Bringer and can you just imagine the different reactions of Bones and Booth meeting the angel of the lord for the first time? Daisy approaching Dean when he was at his most angry ( read Impala-crashing fury )? Sweets trying to get not only Sam and Dean but Cas as well into therapy with him? ( angels do not need therapy omg )

And what I like most about this story is how the author handled all the characters with utmost respect and care even when they annoy the hell out of you ( and by you, I meant me of course ) in the show. Lol Daisy, anyone?

A perfect blend of comedy and suspense with a little bit of romance thrown in, just a little, there were demons to put down and an apacalypse to avert after all, I'm highly, highly recommending it to fans of both shows!!

And oh boy, am I rec'ing this.

The Righteous Man in the Shallow Grave by [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple. SPN/Bones crossover, gen, rating R, 27,030 words.

Summary: When an unidentified body is found in an illegal grave in a field in Pontiac, Illinois, the body gets shipped to the Medico-Legal Lab at the Jeffersonian for identification, and Death calls Tessa in with a warning: "The righteous man has broken, and the angels have breached Hell's gates."

Written for the [livejournal.com profile] sncross_bigbang, I was absolutely delighted when I first knew that the author was writing a Bones/SPN crossover and was thrilled when it was posted a few days ago. But I kept my excitement in check ( or tried to ) because you know, high expectatations and all that jazz. But [livejournal.com profile] bellatemple delivered, and beyond. It was awesome and amazing from start to finish. She gave a very credible crossover with the characters from both fandoms sounding true to what we know of them. A Must Read, especially to fans of both shows!

A Bizarre Love Triangle by [livejournal.com profile] riyku. J2 AU, PG-13, 7500 words.
Summary : In which Jensen hates his nickname and Jared looks very good in pink. Jensen's also carrying a torch for his best friend, but that's another thing entirely.

I've always had a soft spot for J2 stories in which one of them is secretly in love with the other. Two best friends growing up together, Jared aiming for the stars with his artistic talent leaving Jensen feeling that he's holding back his friend and on top of that trying to hide his love for Jared. Enters an Ivy-League type, old school friend who used to be on Jensen's case which made the story even better. Heh, I'm such a sucker for jealous, insecure Jensen lol.

Lovely story, this made my heart ache in all the right ways.

Bobby's story by [livejournal.com profile] verucasalt123. Sam/Dean, R, 1004 words.

Squee number one: Seriously? Like, seriously seriously???

If Martin weren't yanking chains, I wonder very much in what role he'll be cast as. An elf? Oh he'd be perfect as one, tall and moody and broody, all aloof and elegant. I'm not into the RPFs ( yet ), or the FPSs either ( yet ) but I imagine there'll be lots of plotbunnies floating around, namely Martin wanting Benedict by his side for the movie!

Squee number two: This pic which was posted a while back made me melt into a puddle of goo.

Squee number three: This is just so very lovely. My favourite man with my favourite woman )

And squee number four: A story that really, really made me happy, my heart was practically singing while reading it! Blindness by [livejournal.com profile] glassyskies, Dean/Cas PG-13, 10,500 words.

With that title, I initially thought it was about either Dean or Cas going blind, but it it isn't. Not the physical kind anyway. It's Cas wearing his heart on his sleeves with everyone but Dean noticing it. It kind of made me think of that meta by Cupidsbow but where Dean isn't actually an asshat, just oblivious. Sweet yet heartbreaking with awesome Sam, awesome Balthazar and awesome Bobby!

I'm not familiar with Dungeons and Dragons but I thoroughly enjoyed this Big Bang written for last year's challenge.

From the Ruined Tower to the Caves of Unknown Horror by [livejournal.com profile] annella, J2 Dungeons and Dragons AU, 30,500 words, rating R.

Summary : Jared's been adventuring for most of his life. He loves being out on the road with his friends—killing monsters and bad guys, finding treasure, and helping people out of sticky situations. It's all part of being a good-hearted barbarian. Then his carefree life is shaken up by the introduction of a scrawny half-elf wizard called Jensen, who joins them for a quest upon which they will encounter horror, true friendship, and a secret buried deep underground...

An exciting fantasy adventure starring Jared and Jensen and while I know nothing about D&D, there're plenty of Lord of the Ring referrals that thrilled me no end. It made me want to go see what D&D is all about, the characters and their adventures are so incredibly amazing! Not a single dull moment in this story and if this were a book, it'd be one of those unputdownable page-turners.

My heart sped up a bit when I saw this fic by [livejournal.com profile] zoemathemata came up. I love her Big Bang last year which was totally creepy and clever and engaging and you should totally read that if you hadn't already.

Folie a Deux is twisty and subtly scary, its undertone of sinisterness is not the in-your-face kind of sinister but more of the type that's ... subliminal with you not knowing who is who and what is what, making you want to read and read. And read. And her original character here is as awesome as the ones in her Cross Creek!
layne67: (J2 flower shirt)
I'm all misty-eyed now. I started reading this story in April last year, it was at chapter 30 then and I stayed up all night reading it, followed by angst-filled days of waiting for the updates. Dark Emeralds never disappoint. Each subsequent chapter fulfills my expectations, and beyond.

And you know with the WIPs when you're dreading the day when the authors just give up on their stories? I never had any doubt that Dark Emeralds would finish this story, and finished it in a spectacular way too, if I may say so.

I just wish that more people would read this wonderful, amazing story, that it's not limited to just a certain group of readers. Non-J2 fans probably won't be reading this, or those who don't read slash, or those who're not into the Regency era.

But if you'd just see this as an original fiction, a fantastic love story that's written extraordinarily well by a truly amazing writer, trust me, you won't be disappointed. So yup, I'm urging you to read this if you hadn't already! And if you don't do wips and are waiting for this story to be completed, now is the time to start!

Now if only I had a smidgen of artistic talent, I'd have made vids and arts and banners for this story. I'm so envious of readers who're able to sing their praises in more ways than one, like this vid that someone created for the wonderful dragon!fic Queensguard. But alas, I would just have to settle for some inane gushings and not so articulate squees lol.

And lastly, many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] janissa11 for rec'ing Restraint in her journal in the first place. This story is totally going to be in my Top Eleven of the Most Perfect Stories in the three fandoms that I read, heheh wouldn't you like to know what they are? ;DD

Great one, this. A feel-good fic.

Combat Medicine by [livejournal.com profile] mollyamory. Sam/Dean, PG, 1400 words.
Summary : Castiel can't seem to quit his day job. They begin shouting at him -- or each other -- or both -- while his atoms are still settling into place.

Rib-ticklingly hilarious, it's Castiel being at the boys' beck and call, settling one dispute after another. This time? He does something totally unexpected which I totally approve!!

In less time than it takes an electron to blink he arrives -- trench-coated and tied and bound in a shell of simulated flesh -- to find the two of them glaring around the room impatiently, as if they’d summoned him a week ago instead of what amounts, basically, to this very second. As if, indeed, they had the right to summon him at all. He rifles through the limited set of facial arrangements his time with the Winchesters has taught him to keep immediately on hand, and settles with surety on thin, tight lips and cold eyes under a furrowed brow. He is aiming for a quelling look of imminent heavenly wrath, but perhaps he is a bit too subtle.
