Close Your Eyes by [ profile] sonofabiscuit77. SPN, Sam/Dean AU, NC-17, 52,000 words.

Summary: There are some relationships so taboo they’re irresistible...

So, okay, this fic came with a lot of warnings, but the one thing that jumped out at me was this - the OMC in question is basically Alan Rickman, and I was like omg, Dean and an OMC who's Alan Rickman. That, together with all the other warnings, and I knew right away that this was going to be a train-wreck. And it is, in an emotionally-gripping, heart-breaking, totally GOOD and satisfying way. In other words, fasten your seat-belt. Tight.

The Ramblers by [ profile] mijmeraar. J2 AU, R, 36,566 words.

Summary : Jensen Ackles - part time photographer and part time shit kicker - is waist deep in his best friends’ break downs and drug dealings; in dyslexic musicians and disabusing ex-boyfriends. If that’s not enough, he meets Jared Padalecki –a young, breakthrough actor with a bestselling movie to his name – who, awkward but earnest, strives for Jensen’s affections. The safe and sheltered life behind his camera isn’t enough, now, and Jensen’s set to become the star of his own show – whether he’s ready or not.

This is just. Wow.

*takes deep breath*

I started on the first chapter yesterday evening, couldn't stop thinking about it last night, finished the whole thing this morning. And I've been staring at the screen for a good 10 minutes, trying to think of the right words to properly do this story justice and I can't think beyond fantastic and splendid and amazing.

Think 'Notting Hill' and you'll get the idea. Jared is no Julia Roberts though ( more like Zac Effron, only taller and bigger ), and Jensen's no Hugh Grant. Like, at all. Jensen's as far from adorably bumbling ( bumblingly adorable? ) as you can get. He's flawed, as are his dysfunctional but well-meaning friends, but realistically so. And his stubborness at holding on to his principles is as irritating as it's endearing, and that's what make this Jensen unique and special to me.

The secondary characters are well fleshed-out, and I found myself rooting for Matt and the rest as much as I did Jared and Jensen, and I don't usually do that, identify with the other characters I mean. Their stories are intriguing but not so much that they take your mind off the main story. It's just enough that you want Matt to make up with Jillian, that you want Wayne to be safe, that Chris and Steve will make it with their music. Heck, I even like the Jungle Gym guys!

A truly enjoyable read, this one is a keeper.

And now I just can't get this image out of my mind.

Apocalypse Z by [ profile] baylorsr, [ profile] spn_j2_bigbang, gen, PG-13, 21,559 words.

Summary : It’s the zombie apocalypse, and Sam, Dean and Castiel are just trying to get to Bobby’s in one piece. And not undead.

Delightfully witty, clever, fun and funny, I enjoyed it tremendously. A fabulous read!

The Theory of Relativity by [ profile] wutendeskindfic, spn_j2_bigbang, Sam/Dean, past Sam/Jess, NC17, 20,200 words.

Summary : The Apocalypse is over. Sam writes it all down, and the result tops the New York Times bestseller list for an entire year. Dean loves that Sam's found something to do with his life, but doesn't know how he fits in. And when Dean reads Sam’s second novel, things get even more confusing for him.

I have so much love for this fic! It's full-on domestic bliss with no heavy artillery whatsoever. It's ridiculously sweet and adorable and schmoopy with maybe just a tiny bit of angst because what's the Winchesters without their angst? There's no worry about demons or apocalypse because that's over and done with and the only things they have to worry about are nosy neighbours and curious reporters trying to find out whether the Sean in Sam's book is actually Dean. Oh yes, the part when that reporter called Dean when Sam was away is one of my favourite parts!

She asks Dean later that day if he wants a younger sibling to play with. He considers it for a long time before answering. “As long as it gets to be my baby.” The Theory of Relativity by Sam Winchester.

A feel-good, to-be-read-again-and-again fic ::happy sigh::

Finished reading Jeffery Deaver's Sleeping Doll. Took me more than a month when it used to be just a couple of days, three days tops, for me to finish a book. I'm a bit disappointed with it. Oh it has all the usual Deaver's trademark ie lots and lots of twists and turns and they're good, I'm not saying they're not, it's just that there're too many of them, thrown one after another that it made you feel quite dizzy and it got to the point that you couldn't quite appreciate them fully.

Having said that, I really didn't expect spoilers )

I'm not sure what to think with the news that Jeffery Deaver will be writing the next James Bond novel. James Bond movie maybe but a book? I guess I'm not as into him now as I used to be. Lately I seem to find his characters and writing lacking in depth, though his twists are still awesome and unguessable. Mostly.

Next in line - Sleep, Pale Sister by Joanne Harris. But what with the Big Bangs and all, it'll probably take me longer than a month to finish that!

Speaking of Big Bangs, I've read ( and liked ) this, this and this. I'm planning to read this next. The summary sounds interesting. And I want to read this because the idea of Mary meeting Ellen sounds very intriguing!

Ain't No Sunshine by [ profile] allie_quixotic, Big Bang J2 cwrps, 53,093 words, NC17

Summary : Jared and Jensen have been punishing each other for a mistake made long ago. How far will one bend and the other break?

Future fic, set ~8 years after Supernatural ends. Jensen's living his life as a semi-recluse in the house they bought together in Hawaii while Jared continues on with his career as a movie star. Interspersed with flashbacks from the time they were still doing Supernatural, this story tells of how they broke-up and got back together repeatedly, and why Jared couldn't commit himself to a life with Jensen.

Major, and I mean major Angst! I stayed up until 3 am to finish it.

Crush by [ profile] sonofabiscuit77, Sam/Dean NC17, 61000 words, future fic with flashbacks from Dean's last year before his deal came through and mentions of his time in hell.

Summary : Five years after the apocalypse didn’t happen and Sam and Dean have settled down, or as much as the Winchesters can ever settle down. Sam is a college professor and Dean a well-respected small business owner and they’re learning how to balance work, hunting and dog-ownership while coping with the metaphorical and literal scars of war. Life’s not perfect, not for a (sort of) out and proud couple in small town USA with a lot to hide, but they’re dealing, that is, until Dean employs one sexually-confused teenager who develops an unhealthy obsession with both of them... Switching between five years earlier and now, we learn how the boys came together, how they made it through the big fight and whether they’ll ever manage to find that flighty temptress, happily ever after.

Sam and Dean from the POV of one 19-year-old boy, Derek, who's having a sexual identity crisis when he has his first gay crush on Dean. This story is interspersed with Sam's voice and it's extremely well-done considering that the first person POV is not everyone's cup of tea ( including myself ). But it has domestic Winchesters and nothing hits my buttons harder than the boys settling down, with a dog to boots. But this is not just another sugar-and-spice, feel-good fic, there is a darkness in Sam that Derek senses right from the beginning and one thing leads to another, and Derek really wants to know what's the real story behind the seemingly perfect token gay couple of their small community.

A perfect read!

Terraform by [ profile] gilascave, J2 sci-fi AU, 23,000 words.

Summary : Jensen works for the Terraformation Department, monitoring a planet almost ready for settlement. Jared is a bartender new to the station, who decides to make Jensen his own personal project. Everything seems perfect, too perfect, that Jensen begins to have his doubts about Jared. Is he really what he says he is or does he have an ulterior motive in courting the shy and socially-awkward Jensen?

I had this fic bookmarked to read later but then I saw this stunning cover-art and I just had to read it there and then. And suffice to say that the fic is as perfect as the pic!

Queensguard by [ profile] aramuin, J2 rps.

Summary : It's been nearly three years since the war against the alien race known as the Others changed the world and nearly four months since they were beaten back by Earth's natural superweapons, the dragons. Jared's looking forward to reconnecting with his best friend and picking up life where he left off. It doesn't seem much to ask but after three years, how much has really changed? And are the secrets Jensen's hiding better left alone?

Dragon!fic. I gave this one a try because [ profile] katikat said it shouldn't be missed. Didn't think that I would enjoy this but man, it was awesome! The story really picked up for me after the third chapter when the mystery surrounding the dragons and the Volunteers was cleared up and from then on I pretty much couldn't stop reading it. In a way, this fic is slightly reminiscent of Veterans of the Psychicwar, there's the war with the other beings, psychic abilities and Jensen taking Jared under his wing! A must-read.

And now I must go read that other dragon!fic which I've been bookmarking for quite some time. Yup, I'm on a dragon-roll now!

And also, I'm so going to think of Jared and Jensen in Topspin by [ profile] lazy_daze the next time I watch Wimbledon. And I cannot not think of [ profile] arabia764's epic With You Under A Cold Bright Sky

I've just finished this Big Bang story by [ profile] fryadvocate and wow, I'm still reeling from the impact of it.

Dead Soldiers: An Oral History of the End Times, gen, word count 43,400.

Summary : The world is ending, and the Winchester brothers fight till the end.

Told completely from outside POVs, this story is made up of a series of interviews done to get a more accurate interpretation of the End Times War, interviews with primary sources who had direct contacts with Sam and Dean Winchester, two brothers previously known as criminals with a history of violence and how they later became the Prophet of the Lord and the Anti-Christ. Yes, Prophet of the Lord, that would be Dean, and Sam the anti-christ. And it all started with Sam on the brink of death and Dean bringing him back to life, again. Sounds familiar? It is and it isn't. Because what Dean did to save Sam was nothing like what he had ever done before - there was no deals with crossroad demons, no swearing of obedience to the angels - because Dean bypassed all those to get direct to God, or what seemed like it. And as the story was told from outside POVs, from people with different perspectives on what they thought really happened, it was a bit confusing at first ( but in a good, I-want-to-know-what-happened way ) but it all eventually came together, beautifully.

What I really like about the story is how the author made it seems so realistic with the involvement of civilians and the FBIs and the soldiers, the media reports, it wasn't just about the hunters and the demons and the angels, there were real people here, everyday people like you and me, the doctors who treated Sam, the fanatical priests, the reporters, even the President himself. This is what I envisioned the apocalypse ( or almost apocalypse in this case ) be like if the CW had the budget for it.

Totally recommended!

[ profile] mews1945, Dean in this story reminds me of your Casey in 'Family'. Do read this if you could find the time and you'll know what I mean!
