I agree - canon!Sam would definately have known and looked after the impala. Maybe he did but hid it away in a garage somewhere as he knew Dean was too fragile initially to see it but he hoped that in time the impala would bring Dean joy again.
And oh god no! *wibbles* If Dean did that then that is the ultimate proof that he was ready and raring to go. *cries again when I remember he did die just when he was learning to have hope again*
YES! Sam can go get it back outta that garage. See he had been keeping it there since Dean died as he couldn't bear to lose the last tie to his brother. But also he couldn't bear to be constantly reminded either. So he had just paid the rental for the last seven years to keep it safe. But now that Hannah is old enough he goes and spends a week re-tuning and bring the old girl up to scratch. *Loves*
