I think the experience with the evil couple made Sam realise that he had to do something special for Dean. I think Sam just loves his big bro so much that he HAD to make this day as special as he could now, with that fear in his mind that this would probably be the last one they would spend together.
I cannot wait for the new series this week, except I am a little worried that the whole tone of the boys relationship will have irrefutably changed, and we may never quite have the same camaraderie between them 5hat we had before. I feel that the experience they had both endured will have changed them forever!!
