I finally, finally got to see the episode 'Red Sky In The Morning'. Put it off for so long because so many people had said that it's one of the worst episodes ever. Didn't download it when it first aired because I didn't like 'Sin City', the same way I didn't download 'The Kids Are Alright' and 'Bad Day', because of 'The Magnificent Seven'. And boy was I wrong there, because Kids and Bad Day are awesome!
Anyway. Red Sky. It wasn't that bad actually. At least, not in the way Usual Suspect, The Magnificent Seven and Sin City are bad ( IMO ). And it's probably because I don't really hate Bela, whom I think is the main reason why so many dislike this episode.
Bela, Bela, Bela. I didn't hate her then. I don't hate her now. Especially not now after we were told on why she did what she did. Unlike the old Ruby, I like her now that she's no longer around but that isn't so with Bela.
I saw her for the first time in Fresh Blood, and I remember thinking "Oh, so this is the infamous Bela", and seeing her then made me wonder about the Bela-dislike. Oh I love my Sam and Dean, but I don't know, I somehow don't really mind seeing them being played up by Bela. The shooting, the Impala-towing, the stealing, I thought it was kind of ... hilarious.
Now I don't know whether the fact that Dean never did have his angry sex with her played a part in this. But you know, thinking about it, uhm, maybe that scene was never written because uhm, Jensen couldn't do angry sex, with her or with anybody for that matter? Or maybe it was just because of the writers' strike, and the show being shortened to 16 from the usual 22 episodes. So yeah, maybe I would have hated her too if they did have sex, angry or otherwise, and yeah, how shallow is that?

One question. A lot of people were saying that Kripke bowed to fans' outcry, that he didn't meant to have her killed off, and her past was written in later. But that dialogue between Dean and Bela, the one where Dean was saying something about Bela's daddy, and Bela saying that Dean didn't know anything about her, I got the feeling that the writers already knew where they were going with her storyline, and it wasn't something they wrote in later. Any thoughts?
As for the story as a whole, I quite enjoyed it. And hey, it has the boys in tux, what's not to like about that? Omg, that scene where Dean was walking down the stairs, the-daughter-of-the-house-going-to-prom style *FLAILS*
Dean : "Don't objectify me." Yeah, right *g*

Date: 2008-12-19 10:19 am (UTC)♣ I think I agree that the writers actually knew where they were going and what happened wasn't because they followed what the fans wanted. They might have made some changes but I believe they were not too much. Once a writer decides on the story plot, it's not that easy to change because of the feedback they receive. They can only change that much.
♥ Daughter of the house! But of course. *meltsflailsfaints* The writers played with Jensen in this episode I think. Jen is really the girl. Heheh. Now I feel like watching this episode again.
♠ And the panic attack is LOOOOOOOOOVE. Jared, hug Jensen. Now!
♣ I'm sorry but I still hate Bela. I don't know but Dean is always in high tension every time he appears with her. The chemistry is just awful.

Date: 2008-12-19 10:28 am (UTC)Bela and Ruby were both bitchy girls and I liked that but I didn't like the way Katie played Ruby. I always had the feeling she tries too hard to be bitchy. But I think Lauren played Bela perfectly. I know this is a very unpopular opinion but I don't care.

Date: 2008-12-19 10:45 am (UTC)I think she and Dean had a good chemistry and even Sammy dreamt about her;)
From diffrent lines in diffrent shows I think the writers had decided what should happen to Bela too.
I didn`t like the old Ruby though, but I like the new one.

Date: 2008-12-19 11:00 am (UTC)Hee hee, yep, the writers LOVE to play with Jensen, don't they? That episode, the lederhausen, scared!Dean ... ♥
To me the chemistry is not that bad. I mean, it was worse with Jo. Or Anna.

Date: 2008-12-19 11:42 am (UTC)Okay, she's actually a very poor girl. Abused by her daddy and all. But then, there's something in her that makes me easy to hate her.
Like Dean said, when the hellhounds finally came to her, she should just ask for their help.
But, what did she do? She harassed the boys, in many ways!
And apparently, the writers caught in the mind of fangirls. They believe the we fangirls do hate any female characters in Supernatural. So, it's like they wrote Bela's character for the fangirls to hate.
Aaahhhh....and, Dean having angry sex with Bela? Never gonna happen in a million years! Dean can't do angry sex. Only Sam can.

Date: 2008-12-19 12:03 pm (UTC)I loved Usual Suspects and Sin City, The Magnificent Seven was only so-so for me but Red Sky is the worst ep of the whole show, IMHO. I didn't even recognize Sam and Dean in that ep.
I think that Kripke did bow to the fans' outcry. I don't think he wanted to kill Bela, he maybe wanted her to keep working for Lillith or who knows what but I'm glad that she's dead and I danced on her grave. To be perfectly honest, if Kripke had kept her on the show, I might have stopped watching entirely. As much as I like Jared and Jensen, I hated Bela that much - I loath female characters of the "bitchy Miss Know-It-All" kind.

Date: 2008-12-19 12:17 pm (UTC)In my opinion her character is much like as Dean, strong and tough but hiding their own problem. That why the lucky thing Dean always have Sam who dragging him to telling his problem, but not with Bela since she is alone. I'm kinda have a pity with her.
I dunno, since i don't think two person who have a similiar personality can matched but if Bela being friendly, she definitely can be Dean's best friend :)
Somehow i want her back to the screen, along with Katie 'Ruby' Cassidy (sorry but i love Katie's Ruby^^;) they'll became the most kickass ladies on SPN :D

Hee, Jensen doesn't have it in him to do angry sex. And I meant that in a good way, because I don't want him to have sex with anybody. Period. At least not on screen. The implied ones couldn't be helped, because Dean is Dean. And I wouldn't want him any other way!

Yeah, Bela's shot was only a graze, but it's still a shot. Dean should have shot her back!

Date: 2008-12-19 12:50 pm (UTC)I liked Bela better than Ruby, so I'm totally in the minority. I thought she was a better actress and a more interesting character. The only problem is that I think they had too many episodes with her (and Ruby) eventually, when maybe half as much screen time would've been better.
Red Sky at Morning was okay for me, though it may not become a favorite, but it was funny at times and had some good scenes that I enjoyed. I liked Dean reacting to the Impala disappearing, the sadness I felt when seeing what awful accommodations Sam and Dean were living in (squatting in an abandoned house) since they are the ones saving people and deserve so much better, while Bela, who is only there to get rich and doesn't care about people one bit, is rolling in luxury. I also thought Jensen and Lauren were able to perform pretty well when onscreen together, I don't mean in terms of sexual chemisty but just in their general charisma and craftsmanship.
I generally find that you can't go by everyone else's opinions on an episode because while the overall episode may not become a personal favorite, there may be moments in it that are really worth remembering. :-)

Date: 2008-12-19 12:50 pm (UTC)But I count my blessing and thank my lucky stars that Dean did not have sex with her. I breathed a sigh of relief when she shot Sam coz Dean would never ever ever sleep with anyone who hurt his brother.
Boys in TUX is PURE AND UTTER LOVE.
And Dean's panick attack over his car is still one of my favorite moments from S3.
