I finally, finally got to see the episode 'Red Sky In The Morning'. Put it off for so long because so many people had said that it's one of the worst episodes ever. Didn't download it when it first aired because I didn't like 'Sin City', the same way I didn't download 'The Kids Are Alright' and 'Bad Day', because of 'The Magnificent Seven'. And boy was I wrong there, because Kids and Bad Day are awesome!

Anyway. Red Sky. It wasn't that bad actually. At least, not in the way Usual Suspect, The Magnificent Seven and Sin City are bad ( IMO ). And it's probably because I don't really hate Bela, whom I think is the main reason why so many dislike this episode.

Bela, Bela, Bela. I didn't hate her then. I don't hate her now. Especially not now after we were told on why she did what she did. Unlike the old Ruby, I like her now that she's no longer around but that isn't so with Bela.

I saw her for the first time in Fresh Blood, and I remember thinking "Oh, so this is the infamous Bela", and seeing her then made me wonder about the Bela-dislike. Oh I love my Sam and Dean, but I don't know, I somehow don't really mind seeing them being played up by Bela. The shooting, the Impala-towing, the stealing, I thought it was kind of ... hilarious.

Now I don't know whether the fact that Dean never did have his angry sex with her played a part in this. But you know, thinking about it, uhm, maybe that scene was never written because uhm, Jensen couldn't do angry sex, with her or with anybody for that matter? Or maybe it was just because of the writers' strike, and the show being shortened to 16 from the usual 22 episodes. So yeah, maybe I would have hated her too if they did have sex, angry or otherwise, and yeah, how shallow is that?

Photobucket

One question. A lot of people were saying that Kripke bowed to fans' outcry, that he didn't meant to have her killed off, and her past was written in later. But that dialogue between Dean and Bela, the one where Dean was saying something about Bela's daddy, and Bela saying that Dean didn't know anything about her, I got the feeling that the writers already knew where they were going with her storyline, and it wasn't something they wrote in later. Any thoughts?

As for the story as a whole, I quite enjoyed it. And hey, it has the boys in tux, what's not to like about that? Omg, that scene where Dean was walking down the stairs, the-daughter-of-the-house-going-to-prom style *FLAILS*

Dean : "Don't objectify me." Yeah, right *g*

♠ Jensen could do angry sex, only, he still doesn't top. heheh.

♣ I think I agree that the writers actually knew where they were going and what happened wasn't because they followed what the fans wanted. They might have made some changes but I believe they were not too much. Once a writer decides on the story plot, it's not that easy to change because of the feedback they receive. They can only change that much.

♥ Daughter of the house! But of course. *meltsflailsfaints* The writers played with Jensen in this episode I think. Jen is really the girl. Heheh. Now I feel like watching this episode again.

♠ And the panic attack is LOOOOOOOOOVE. Jared, hug Jensen. Now!

♣ I'm sorry but I still hate Bela. I don't know but Dean is always in high tension every time he appears with her. The chemistry is just awful.

You mean, with the right partner, he could do angry sex? But, but, I don't want him to have angry sex with Jared ... ;P

Hee hee, yep, the writers LOVE to play with Jensen, don't they? That episode, the lederhausen, scared!Dean ... ♥

To me the chemistry is not that bad. I mean, it was worse with Jo. Or Anna.

I liked Bela and I love Lauren.

Bela and Ruby were both bitchy girls and I liked that but I didn't like the way Katie played Ruby. I always had the feeling she tries too hard to be bitchy. But I think Lauren played Bela perfectly. I know this is a very unpopular opinion but I don't care.

From what I've heard of Lauren, I like her too! And I think she's cute. And I love her accent. And I wasn't annoyed by her bitchiness.

Poor Bela. Imagine going through what she went thorugh, alone. At least Dean has Sam and Bobby with him.

I liked Bela and the way she played the boys.
I think she and Dean had a good chemistry and even Sammy dreamt about her;)
From diffrent lines in diffrent shows I think the writers had decided what should happen to Bela too.
I didn`t like the old Ruby though, but I like the new one.

Oh my, Sam's wet dream LOL. I guess since they couldn't write in Dean/Bela anywhere, they just had to have Sam have it - in a dream!

And I thought Jared's reaction to that sex-scene ( in the gag reel ) was adorable :DD

I hate Bela, because she shot Sam! That's unforgivable. I don't see any reason why she should do that. At all.

Okay, she's actually a very poor girl. Abused by her daddy and all. But then, there's something in her that makes me easy to hate her.

Like Dean said, when the hellhounds finally came to her, she should just ask for their help.

But, what did she do? She harassed the boys, in many ways!

And apparently, the writers caught in the mind of fangirls. They believe the we fangirls do hate any female characters in Supernatural. So, it's like they wrote Bela's character for the fangirls to hate.

Aaahhhh....and, Dean having angry sex with Bela? Never gonna happen in a million years! Dean can't do angry sex. Only Sam can.

Awww, but that's just a graze, not a real shot!

*teases you*

Hee, Jensen doesn't have it in him to do angry sex. And I meant that in a good way, because I don't want him to have sex with anybody. Period. At least not on screen. The implied ones couldn't be helped, because Dean is Dean. And I wouldn't want him any other way!

I hated Bela and I still hate Bela. She ruined the whole S3 for me and to be honest, I never won back my devotion to the show, even after she was killed. I still enjoy it very much but my obsession with the show is gone.

I loved Usual Suspects and Sin City, The Magnificent Seven was only so-so for me but Red Sky is the worst ep of the whole show, IMHO. I didn't even recognize Sam and Dean in that ep.

I think that Kripke did bow to the fans' outcry. I don't think he wanted to kill Bela, he maybe wanted her to keep working for Lillith or who knows what but I'm glad that she's dead and I danced on her grave. To be perfectly honest, if Kripke had kept her on the show, I might have stopped watching entirely. As much as I like Jared and Jensen, I hated Bela that much - I loath female characters of the "bitchy Miss Know-It-All" kind.

IMO season 3 has a lot of weak episodes, mainly from very weak writings. I blame the strike, because I believe they had to a do rush job of everything. But having said that, season 3 also has some of the finest episodes around. Mystery Spot for instance, and Ghostfacers. The Kids Are Alright is another wonderful episode ( much to my surprise I must say, because I was prepared to not like that episode! ).

for me I like Bela (and also Lauren), a lot! though somehow she is being a bitch but i'm really impressed. She is pretty, tough, confident, smart and she can fight (not much of female character in SPN have a personality like this, come from human race XD).

In my opinion her character is much like as Dean, strong and tough but hiding their own problem. That why the lucky thing Dean always have Sam who dragging him to telling his problem, but not with Bela since she is alone. I'm kinda have a pity with her.
I dunno, since i don't think two person who have a similiar personality can matched but if Bela being friendly, she definitely can be Dean's best friend :)

Somehow i want her back to the screen, along with Katie 'Ruby' Cassidy (sorry but i love Katie's Ruby^^;) they'll became the most kickass ladies on SPN :D

Unfortunately, there have been episodes that left me feeling flat, untouched in any way ( namely those 3 eps that I mentioned ) but 'Red Sky'is not one of them. Although it's not up there among, say, Mystery Spot and Dead in the Water, it wasn't a bad episode IMO. And man, Dean saying that Sam could go on without him, boy was he wrong, and right, at the same time.

And the boys in tuxedos, and the James Bond soundtrack are so made of win!

Good meta!! I like your brain. *pets your brain*

I liked Bela better than Ruby, so I'm totally in the minority. I thought she was a better actress and a more interesting character. The only problem is that I think they had too many episodes with her (and Ruby) eventually, when maybe half as much screen time would've been better.

Red Sky at Morning was okay for me, though it may not become a favorite, but it was funny at times and had some good scenes that I enjoyed. I liked Dean reacting to the Impala disappearing, the sadness I felt when seeing what awful accommodations Sam and Dean were living in (squatting in an abandoned house) since they are the ones saving people and deserve so much better, while Bela, who is only there to get rich and doesn't care about people one bit, is rolling in luxury. I also thought Jensen and Lauren were able to perform pretty well when onscreen together, I don't mean in terms of sexual chemisty but just in their general charisma and craftsmanship.

I generally find that you can't go by everyone else's opinions on an episode because while the overall episode may not become a personal favorite, there may be moments in it that are really worth remembering. :-)

Thank you. Oh yeah, we're very much in the minority here. I hesitated to make this post but what the heck :))

Sam and Dean squatting in that abandoned house is one of the saddest parts for me, too, and to think that Dean probably had done that when he was hunting alone when Sam was in Stanford *chest-clench*

Jensen and Lauren were okay together, but like I said, that was probably because they didn't have any sex . But then, Dean and Jo didn't have any sex either and still I thought they have zero chemistry!

I hate Bela. Oh boy do I. But only because that is exactly what the show wanted me to do. She was an antagonist. We were meant to not like her.

But I count my blessing and thank my lucky stars that Dean did not have sex with her. I breathed a sigh of relief when she shot Sam coz Dean would never ever ever sleep with anyone who hurt his brother.

Boys in TUX is PURE AND UTTER LOVE.

And Dean's panick attack over his car is still one of my favorite moments from S3.

I liked Bela--and RSAM. She was fun, sassy, and I enjoyed that she was able to get one over on the boys. The "angry sex" line is one of my favorites; wish they had gotten it on at least once. Of course, she got one over on them a few times too many. It gave me the feeling that her attractiveness made Dean's brains fall down to his dick, and he kept screwing up, which made him OOC. I loved the boys in tuxes!

BTW, I loved 'Sin City', 'The Kids Are Alright' and 'Bad Day'; thought they were all excellent eps. Only M7 disappointed me.

Anyway, back to Bela. She was intriguing, and I believe they intended her to be a victim of her father's sexual abuse and a deal maker from the beginning. Perhaps they "moved up" the date of her demise because of fan displeasure with her character, but I thought she was a hoot and a great foil for the boys. I was hoping she'd stick around.

Love, Robin

I'm still trying to put my finger on why I like Bela, and why she didn't bother me the way she did other fangirls. And I think what you said here is part of it - she was a hoot and a great foil for the boys - and also, I didn't sense any malice, or meanness, in what she did to the boys. Except for that phonecall she made to the police in 'Jus In Belo'. Now that one's bad, but the rest? I love the boys to bits, but I kind of err, laughed, when the Impala was towed, and the other things that she did. Poor Dean of course, but hey, he got back his Impala!

I loved her! Bela is just the perfect, pain in the ass, thorn in the guys side. I just liked her character. I think so many fans were missing the depth to her character because they were too busy bitching her out. She is messed up, but as someone has already said she has been on her own and gets by the only way how, I think a lot of her personality is just her defence mechanism and surviving the only way she can, inside is still a scared little girl and you could see that at the end, when Dean asked why she just didn't ask for help, well, if she had been abused as we were led to believe, it is obviously going to give you a lot of trust issues. She had spent the last ten years alone, it is bound to screw you up.

It makes me sad SPN fans are not accepting of female characters if they are re-occuring. To be fair, Dean and Sam aren't perfect either, but everyone overlooks their flaws. Hmm, I wonder why? ;o)

Another Bela-fan, goody!

Sam and Dean are of course, far from perfect, but fans, me included, do not mind them for that, because Supernatural is Sam and Dean. Heh, I don't think I would have liked them if they were perfect!

Whereas Bela is someone who came later, and some people think of her as the interloper. I like Bela, but even I thought that she, or Katie Cassidy for that matter, shouldn't have been cedited alongside Jared and Jensen.

Dean totally can make angry sex but i doubt it'd ever be with Bela - it was her dream about it not his. Fandom amuses me sometimes. Bet if Bela was a man everybody'd love her (him)?
To Kripke's question. I think it was planned from the beginning - he never said he planned to have Bela for next season so he needed the way to get rid of her and he did it as planned. I don't see any fandom's influence there - actually fandom hates Ruby too but Kripke planned leave her in next season and he did it.

I think most fans hated Bela because they were uber-protective of Sam and Dean. They didn't like it when the brothers were being made to look like fools, over and over again by Bela. You really have to have a sense of humour, a particular and specific kind of humour, because I'm not saying SPN fans don't have it, to accept Bela.

I like Bela, but not in the way I love Castiel. I mean, I have people on my flist who hate Castiel, and I'm quite able, and will defend Castiel, listing up his virtues and why Dean needs him and all, but with Bela, I usually couldn't say anything much, because at the end of the day, she was out only for herself, and if you liked her, you have to accept her for what she was, warts and all.

It's the episode where the victims died after they saw a ghost ship. Turns out that they, at one or another, have betrayed a blood relative - brother, sister, parent. The spirit that killed them was once a sailor who was hanged by the captain of the ship he was on, who was his own brother.

It was quite an interesting episode, mainly because of the boys wearing tuxedos heheh.

I think the writers would have give Bella a past (they kind of did in 'Time is on my side') but with the strike they had to shorten her storyline to focus on Dean's deal one but I think they never planned on having her in the forth season....

That's just it! I didn't feel like throttling her up or anything, whenever she pulled one up over the boys. In fact sometimes I felt like cheering her on! And I don't feel that I'm being disloyal to the boys, my love for Sam and Dean is intact, always has and always will. And I got it when Kripke said he was fond of the character Bela!

Lurker popping in over from dean_sam to say I never had a problem with Bela either. I much preferred her over Ruby. And I thought Lauren was a wonderful actress.

I also loved Sin City, and Usual Suspect, but I found TKAA to be really boring and over the top.

Also Jensen/Dean could TOTALLY do angry sex the writers have just never given him a chance.

But he's been acting for more than 10 years and they never wrote him one yet? Mind you, I'm not dissing him or anything, I LOVE that man, but personally, and that's just my personal opinion with nothing to back me up except my hunch so don't flame me please, I think he just couldn't do it!

And. I love it when he did all those gentle, tender sex, the sweet making-outs with Lana Lang in SV, *that* scene in Devour, Dean/Cassie, Dean/Anna, you don't really need angry sex for it to be hot. Given a choice between Sam/Ruby and Dean/Anna? The latter wins, without question. At least in my book!

Cheers :)

I really liked Bela. There was just something about the way she played the boys, getting the better of them occasionally.

As far as Bela's storyline goes, I'd be willing to bet that Kripke and Co had that figured out right from the beginning. That conversation between Dean and Bela in Red Sky was just a little too foreshadowing to be coincidence. I have a feeling we lost some of what would have developed her story a little more due to the writer's strike, which is a shame.

Date: 2008-12-23 07:14 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
I was kind of suprised by that conversation actually, because there're quite a number of posts that suggested Bela's backstory was written to elicit fans' sympathy for her when her character was bashed and hated by so many. But from RSAM, I don't think that was so at all! The mention of Bela's father for instance, and her expression when Dean asked her whether she got any hugs from her Daddy. I wonder whether the actors themselves knew about Bela's past.

Okay, well, you know I don't like Bela at all so... The thing that bothers me most about this ep is that she belittles Dean's intelligence. I know that's her character, but I don't like Dean being made to look stupid. Being the butt of a joke, sure, that's fine... but not dumb to the point where he has no appropriate comeback. He's Dean Winchester. The beauty of his character is that Sam's the Full Ride Stanford guy but Dean is witty and insightful, almost always one step ahead.

Lots of people didn't like the old lady pawing at Sam, but I laughed myself silly when she grabbed his ass. It's sooo uncomfortable to watch her touching him but, damn, it was funny!

BTW, I love that cap of Dean hyperventilating. Jared's hand looks massive on Jensen right there!

I probably have to eat my word if Bela were to come back from hell and be Dean's love interest. I would HATE that!!

I love Bela from the first time she showed up, and a bit disappointed when she had to die. I think she and Dean could be the most interesting and funny couple ever.
But then again, Dean already hate her so much because all of what she did ^^;;

Red Sky was my fave episode which Bela on it. We could see the boys in tux, we could see the panic attack that happen on Dean, and, my most fave scene in that episode was where Dean was walking down the stairs!!!
OMG, I'm laughing out loud and feel that was really wrong!!

And I think the writer already made her story line from the first time her character has been made

I like Bela but heheh, I don't think I would have liked it if she became Dean's love interest. The Kids Are Alright is the second last episode that I watched from S3, because the thought of Lisa as the possible mother of Dean's child ... But it turns out that I love that episode!
