Anyone knows how old are the actors who played teen!Dean and young!Sam in Afterschool Specials? Are they actually 18 and 14? I thought Dean looked a lot older than 18 and Sam a lot younger than 14. When I first saw a spoiler-still of them together ( not this one ), I thought they looked more like an uncle and his nephew, or a young father with his son, or brothers who had more than 4 years between them, like a 20-yr-old and a 12-yr-old.

In fact for one horrifying moment I thought that there was another brother in the picture, someone the boys knew nothing about before this!

Do an 18-yr-old and a 14-yr-old usually look like this in the States?

I love Colin Ford though. I love him in A Very Supernatural Christmas and I'm so glad that they got him to play this Sam. I thought he played young Sam perfectly then, and he plays it just as perfectly now. The gestures, the facial expressions - beautiful.

Brock Kelly is okay, I guess. It's just that he looked a lot older than 18, and not as pretty as Jensen. I thought that Dean in Season 1 looked even younger than him!

Photobucket

Darn, why didn't they use Jensen himself? Make him lose weight a little, some CGI maybe. Oh well, we got him in shorts ...

Mmmmm ...

I just saw Kelly's pic without the hair gel and all, and he looked much younger ( and prettier ) than the way he looked in Afterschool Special. 23, eh? God, I'm hankering for Malcom in what's that sitcom called?

Depends on the kids. I think it was to make their size difference now even more striking. Sam had a major growth spurt, didn't he?

I loved those red shorts, and I had a lot of sympathy for Sam and Dean in school. But I really hated it when he slammed the kid in the stomach with a ball. That was way over the top and totally unnecessary. Dean's not a nice guy in some ways, but he's always been okay to kids in the show. Did going to hell make him that sadistic? Because I guess I could understand it if that's the case. But it seemed weird and it made me feel sick when it happened. Are they trying to make him as unsympathetic as possible? That one scene ruined the whole episode for me. I couldn't get past the way it upset me.

I was floored by this too at first. I thought young Dean was actually the dad. I was shocked when I realized it was Teen Dean and brother Sam.
I thought Young Sam was absolutely and remarkably PERFECT. He and older Sam were totally linked.
I thought Young Dean had the mouth and voice perfect for older Dean, but where Older Dean has a kind of effeminate babyface, it didn't match. Younger Dean actually looked older. It was totally genetically funky to me.
When young Sam kicked jerk's ass I was in heaven and even thinking of Casey at that moment, imagining him kicking Gabes ass.
It was a good show. One I will rewatch. But teen Dean didn't fit well with older Dean. Jensen is more sensitive looking, even when he tries to be manly.
Now Sam...oh yeah...totally and naturally manly...but with a twist of girly.

I agree! I saw that and thought What? I have only really come into interest this season, but that scene was over the top obnoxious and I didn't deal with it well at all.
How you doing sweet one? I will be away this weekend. Anna was called up as an alternate for the last Junior High Competition at the OSU Nationals. We will be in Columbus. Are you feeling better? I am worried you know. It is expected.

I thought the kid playing Sam was amazing, Dean... not so much. You're right, they don't look like brothers 4 years apart, it's a much bigger gap. He's too old for 18.

I haven't said anything in any of the other posts about it. Seems everybody but me liked the episode. I think I would have too, if not for that one scene. It had a lot more about the brothers in it. But that shocked me and left me feeling upset. It's just a show, but we've invested a lot of time and interest and affection for these characters. I don't want to see them so changed they're unrecognizable.

I'm feeling better now, sweetie. I assume Anna's your daughter? Good luck to her and I hope you both have a good weekend, love.

Yes...she's 14 and this is the last 8th grade competition. Her heart is singing but she loves doing this too. If you look up "springboro junior high cheerleading" on ytube you can see their routine (she was at the Centerville one). She has been doing it since 3rd grade and has great friendships. For an AF brat, it is wonderful to see that continuance and friendship from such an early age.
hugs you again v

No, not that one!! I'm thinking of Jensen as Malcolm in that teenage sitcom, 'Mr Rhodes', the one where he was the nerdy teen. LOL I LOVE him in that!!

I was taken aback too, when Dean did that thing with the ball. I don't know, maybe he was pissed off with the kids? Or maybe having to be the PE teacher, with the shorts and the red hairband and all ( gosh, I'm thinking the writers are having so much fun poking fun at Jensen this season ). Remember Dean saying that he didn't do shorts in Season 1? Anyway, that was the impression that I got, not him being sadistic per se, but he was fed-up with the whole get-up thing.

That's what I like to think anyway. I love Dean, and I really, really don't want to think badly of him. It's bad enough for him to say that he enjoyed torturing souls in hell, though thankfully I've gotten over that one.

Have you seen 'Something Wicked' and 'A Very Supernatural Christmas'? Colin Ford was also the one who played wee!Sam in both episodes, and I really think he's a fine actor. Not so much the one who played wee!Dean, and same thing with this actor who played teen!Dean. I guess Jensen's shoes ( or jacket ) are too big to fill by any other actor, kid or teen!

even thinking of Casey at that moment

That's exactly what I thought, too! I even had this image of Dean coming to his rescue ala Zeke!!

I think Brock Kelly was trying a bit too hard to be like Jensen!Dean. All those "sugar" and "sweethearts" coming from his mouth didn't sound quite right. The only time that I think he got it right was when he ran into Sam at the corridor and he called out Sammy to his brother. I like that part a lot.

This is the episode that got me worried with the stills that I've accidentally seen. Not the red shorts one, but a still of teen!Dean with wee!Sam.

Things that were running in my mind then :

1. They were doing an episode without Jensen, or maybe with very little Jensen in it.
2. They got a new character in, someone to play a third brother to Sam and Dean.
3.They've got a new regular in, to play ... whoever.

Eeeeps!

Anyway, I saw a pic of Brock Kelly without that Fonzie get-up, and I thought he looked much nicer and younger and prettier as himself. Why oh why must they make teen!Dean look like that?

Hey! Those knees of his are damn sexy!! The knees and those bow-legs *FLAILS* But then, I love me some Jensen-skin, I'll take whatever parts that I can get!!!!

You may be right about that. I just wished they hadn't done that. I love him too. He's such a complicated character, one I've learned to love so much, along with Sam too. I hope they'll find a way to redeem Dean and bring him and Sam together the way they should be.

I hope so, too, Julia, I hope so, too. I've been watching some of the episodes from seasons 1, 2 and 3, and sometimes I think that they were completely different persons then.

Maybe it's intentional, that they're meant to be different now, what with Dean in hell and Sam coping alone, dealing with his demonic powers. It's just that, well, it's a bit like The X-Files in its last season :/

When I first looked him up, I saw this pic and thought, "okay, I'll buy that..."

brock kelly

You're right, though, he looked a little too old.

Like I said, I think the problem is that even though he sounded like Dean, moved like Dean and acted like Dean, he doesn't have Jensen's expressive face so he wasn't DEAN.

I saw that pic just this morning! I was telling my hubby if they had use Brock as he is, without that Fonzie-look, I might buy him as Dean. He has the eyelashes anyway, and the lips are not too bad!

I really liked the episode, but I didn't feel the ages of the boys looked especially good. I think Sam looked too young and Dean too old, honestly.

Still, it was a good episode -- I'm happy to see NO RUBY for once!

They should have used Jensen, but I think that would be way to hard on him, especially with the way he gets into character. C'mon they film one episode in a week, even if they had young!Dean and old!Dean on different days... Well, too bad he's not a robot, right? ;)

I hated teen!Dean with passion, I can't connect him with Dean, like At. All.

But wee!Sam is perfect. :)

Colin, red shorts of Jensen and amazing scene in Impala - that's what i was enjoying in this ep. Teen Dean is awful and writing for his is awful too.

I had read ahead of time that the casting ages were wrong, in that Brock is 23 and Colin was two years younger than Sam was supposed to be, so I think that makes him 12.

Some kids do look really young, especially if they're short, but I would never have thought Sam was 14, and Dean looked too old for high school, for sure. What I'm dying to know is when Sam his his growth spurt. In the pilot, if Sam was significantly taller than the last time Dean saw him, you'd think he would have said something, so he must have grown a foot or so between 14 and 18.

Also, I thought it was a different kid playing wee!Sam in Something Wicked, but I'd have to check the credits to be sure. He had much curlier hair, for one thing.

I loved this episode! I did hate it when Dean hit that one kid with the ball. I think he was just getting carried away with the power of it all (snerk!). It could be, too, that John played rough with his boys, if at all. The way they trained, I expect they were tougher than Dean's students at whatever age they are, so he might not have realized how hard it would hit the kid, or how much it would hurt someone not used to physical combat.

I loved wee!Sam beating up the bully, though I thought he took it a bit too far, kind of like the overkill in AHBL2, but maybe it was meant to be foreshadowing? God, I love this show!
