I watched that without any expectation whatsoever since there seemed to be quite a number of negative reactions to it.

I LOVE IT.

It's right up there with 'The End', 'Changing Channels' and 'Free To Be You and Me' for me.

But then, I love 'Ghostfacers' too, and a lot of people didn't like that episode either!

One thing though, and hubby commented on it too. Shouldn't there be a lot more women than men at the convention? Like, maybe 10:1? IDK, I've never been to one before, but I've always thought that there're more girl SPN fans than boys!

I liked it a lot, especially because it was written by Kripke himself. It's like a message directly to us. I have to love that. It's like he came as close as he could to saying, "Wincest. It's okay, I get it." It's truly an expression of love... exasperated love, at times, but still love. it's like we're family.

I agree though... There should have been way more female fans at the convention. Maybe Kripke was afraid of offending us, whereas he sees the male fan-type as very much a stand in for himself.

It kept me glued to the seat, the ghosts were nicely done ( kid ghosts have always creeped me out ), the jokes hilarious, the dialogues snappy, really, there's nothing I didn't like about it!

It was a great episode for me and I'm so glad you think so too!!

Oh, yeah, those were some of the creepiest-looking kids I've ever seen!
It grieves me to see all the negativity about this episode. I actually defriended a couple of people last night, I was so upset! I was like, "if that's how you feel, we are just too different to be friends!" Extreme of me? Perhaps, but their reaction was extreme in my view.

I haven't read any of the reviews, mainly because I haven't seen the episode myself yesterday, but the cut-texts themselves had made me think that the episode was horrible but it really wasn't! The good thing is, my flist was flooded with reviews unlike after 'The Curious Case of Dean Winchester', my flist was eeriely silent then, and heck, I think a silent flist is even more worrying!

I believe the fans were depicted as mostly guys because everyone knows they're mostly females at real cons, so making the con full of guys is another insider joke. I don't think Kripke used guys to spare real fangirls feelings, since he pretty much satirized them in every other way possible.

I think I'd like the show to return to being a drama/horror/doomed-family saga with sprinkles of brilliant comedy as opposed to so many episodes devoted mostly to comedy and fan-winking. I appreciate the fan-winking (and even the fan-mocking), and I love MOTW episodes as much as mytharc ones, but I think they're beginning to sacrifice some of the things the writing team has always been so good at, mainly keeping enough dramatic tension throughout the seasons to keep viewers keenly aware of all the brothers have been through.

Or maybe because that con was more of a role-playing thing, and the guys were there to play the brothers, hence more males than females, unlike the RL cons where the fans get to meet the stars.

I guess I'm grateful for good episodes ( which I supposed is pretty subjective ) that I'd take anything, comedy, semi-comedy, angst, drama, MOTW. Not saying that I'm easily pleased or anything, out of 9 episodes this season, there've been only 4 that I really, really love and The Real Ghostbusters is one of them!

I loved it! We need the silly fun things in addition to the serious angsty episodes. That bit about a breakout session on "Homoerotic Subtext" made me laugh. Sammy was so funny in his reactions to that fangirl.

I know, right? There's fun and silly and bad, and there's fun and silly and good, and 5.09 was certainly the latter for me!

But Dean should have shown more reaction, seeing all those Impalas parked outside the hotel. I mean, a black '67 Chevy Impala is not that common, I think? I'm going to take that as Dean having more pressing matters in his mind - that life and death text that he thought was from Chuck for one thing.

I didn't like Becky when she first appeared in - which episode was that? - but I don't quite mind her so much this time around. And she looked so much like Anna it's a bit creepy, you know, picturing Anna as a di-hard Sam!girl :)

That's true, Dean should have reacted more. My sis and I loved that moment but we also immediately commented about how hard (not to mention expensive) it would be to find a 67 Impala. We didn't love Becky the first time either but at least she had some funny moments here. Is Anna that angel that did Dean? Cuz, ewwww. If she never shows up again it will be too soon.

The men in the real Cons? Only 3 or 4

LOL I jokingly said to my husband that if I were to go to a con, he had to come with me, and he said there was no way he's going to be in the same room with hundreds of screaming women!

I loved it! The hubby and I actually laughed about the fans being mostly male because... At least they didn't go with the fat 40 year old woman stereotype, that would have hit way close to home. LOL I did think it was funny that they went with chubby!Dean, though. When I explained that one to the hubby, he laughed like crazy!

Hubby said this one is his favorite and he made me promise to buy it from iTunes so he can watch it again. That's a good sign, right? Oh, I have to explain that my hubby is a Star Trek geek so he totally gets the convention humor. :D

The guy who played chubby!Dean, he looked so familiar! Has he appeared in another episode before? I know that the concierge was in Long Distance Call but that chubby!Dean? And yes, I think it's funny too that they went with chubby!Dean :))

You're buying the episode from iTunes? You're not downloading it for free?

That guy that played Damien!Dean? The only thing I remember him from is that he played Buzz McCallister (Kevin McCallister's older brother) in the Home Alone movies. :D

Yeah, I buy Supernatural very week. It's my way of supporting the show since I can't watch it when it's on. I even stream it from the CW website just so TPTB, who may be keeping track of things like this, can actually count me as a viewer. This is the only show that means enough to me to do that. And, yeah, I still buy the DVD box sets when the seasons are released.

Oh thanks. I knew have seen him somewhere, and I've seen Home Alone countless times with the kids!

i agree! i went in expecting to hate it and... really, really didn't. it made me grin afterwords and i think it's the only ep in a long while to do that. i <3 it. and OMG did i love ghostfacers!

i saw a good meta on disproportionate number of women vs. men that pointed out something that hadn't occurred to me -- we're working within our identification of canon!fandom as analogous to rl!fandom, but compared with the actual setup of the internal canon it doesn't necessarily figure. in canon you have not a tv show but books, which DOES fit in more with the male-LARPing stereotype. and honestly, i think kripke was just trying not to piss us off. i DID go to a wincon and there were, like, two dudes and a whole bunch of screaming fangirls swigging booze. while rad in rl, i woulda found a (even realistic) representation of that in canon offputting and frightening, tbh. we're lj, now twop. we hide the porn when they come looking.

I usually download the show immediately after a link is up, but for that one I was like, dilly-dallying a bit, I saw so many cut texts that implied that they were disappointed with it and I was so not looking forward to watching it. It was almost like Jump The Shark. I wasn't looking forward to that one at all either and I ended up liking it. It wasn't one of my top favourites, but I didn't dislike it the way I thought I would.

But I was smiling and laughing right from the get go with 5.09. I even enjoyed Becky and I didn't like her the first time she made her appearance!

Good point with the canon!fandom and RL!fandom. I didn't think of that!

Did you do the role-playing thing at wincon?

I think that's because they're larp-ing to be Dean and Sam. :)

Yes, like Essenceofmeanin pointed out in her comment above. In that episode, the fandom there revolved around the books, and like you said, they were larping and all, whereas in RL, the fandom is about a TV show and two hot, hunky guys!

Also, something I'm finding confusing, is it seemed at first like the books were comic books. I can't think of the correct term, but like the real, official "Supernatural" comic books, or "Watchmen" or something. So there was text, but the covers of most of them looked more like comic book drawings than photos. Didn't some of the books have the comic book panels, as opposed to paragraphs of text? Maybe they were a mixture, I'm not sure. Seems to me there are a lot more rabid fanboys than fangirls at comic book stores.

I have very mixed feelings about this ep, but I did find some of it very amusing. I usually prefer it when they do a serious episode with some comic relief thrown in. The ones that are 90% comedy are hit-and-miss for me, probably because I'm not a huge fan of comedies to begin with.

I'm like you. My impression with the SPN books is that they're graphic books. Mainly because what Dean said when he was reading Route 666 in that motel room - "Dude, I'm in full frontal here.". That looked like he was looking at a pic of himself there, not reading about it, right?

I liked the ep, esp the part at the end when Demian tells Dean what Supernatural is really about.

And Demian and Barnes being a couple! <3

Also, the look on Dean's face while he stood by the Impala. :)

part at the end when Demian tells Dean what Supernatural is really about.

Oh yes, I like that part, too. It's touching and moving and kinda unexpected, and I love it.

Do you go to TWoP, Casey? I believe those two characters are RL frequent commenters over there. I'm tempted to go but from what I've heard it's a really harsh place.

Yes! And "to have a brother who would die for you"... that's such an important part of the brother bond, and I love that Demian "got" that.

I go to TWOP, but not very often. It varies a lot... some of the posts are ok, some of it's "harsh", like you say.
