I'm thinking demons. Gordon wanted to kill Dean, and the colour of their eyes and all.

I don't think it's demons. It's always there to protect Dean. :)

Aha! But why would hunters want to kill him if they knew his secret? And that Something seemed to welcome Something Else that apparently was protecting Sam. I wish this is a prologue to something bigger!

So there are two somethings protecting Sam and Dean each. :)

But I'm not sure about the thing about hunters. :(
