To answer your question, BNF means "Big Name Fan" which usually means a fan who seems to be really popular, someone who many people in the fandom have heard of. It's usually a writer or an artist, or some creative person who is so prolific that you can't avoid hearing them. It's sometimes a derogatory term for someone who *thinks* they're a vital part of the fandom and acts like a jerk to get attention.

Let's see, perhaps Jo would be the equivalent of a BNF wannabe in the hunting world. People may have heard of her through her connection to Bill and the Roadhouse, but she hasn't done much to merit accolades on her own.

Pretty much anyone in the fandom that you can mention casually ("I read So-and-So's latest story today,") and people will go, "Oh, yeah, I love her stuff!" is a BNF in the more positive sense. Some people promote themselves, but often the true BNFs are too busy producing something for fandom to enjoy to waste time bragging.
