all I can think of is that this whole time Dean said that he would always look out for Sam while in the mean time Sam had done that simply by giving the amulet? *flails, weeps, squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeees*

and I can also imagine the time when Sam gave it to Dean: Sam gave it to Dean as his thanks for having been looked after so far, being taken care of as a mom to her child, being rocked to sleep, being comforted when he had nightmares. Oh you make me cry now. Sorry I can't go on. *sobs*

It was mentioned in Stele3's 'The 1300 Days' on how Dean got that amulet, and it was good and it made me bawl ( go read if you haven't already, it's gen ) but this is CANON!!!

Btw, I'm looking for book reviews for my lesson and I got a review for this book: My Brother Sam is Dead. Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaa! And there is this sentence in the review: The story is told by Tim, Sam's brother, who respects both Sam and his father. He's stuck in the middle while his father and Sam argue.
