I'm usually nodding off at this time of the day. But suddenly I don't feel slepy at all.

I didn't comment on that since I'm not American and I feel that it's not really my place to do so. But it certainly wakes me up!

Hmmm... Personally, I thought the Cheney thing was pretty funny. It was just as funny as the Lindsey Lohan thing and the Gilmore Girls thing and the Katie Holmes thing, etc. Just, I don't know... I suppose all fiction writers should have some license to express their views (politically and otherwise).

Well, I guess I shouldn't say anything else or someone might come after me... seems like there's wank to find everywhere. Don't want to start any.

This triggered a very interesting discussion. I'm not American either, but I know jokes like this one are being made on the show all the time, and they shouldn't be taken too seriously. Also, it's known that a lot of people are not too fond of Dick Cheney, but that does not make them bad Americans, IMO. But it's good that this woman gave her opinion, and I'm glad to see she did not get bashed to pieces for it.

Hmm. Yeah. Things like that can be found in many shows actually. Personally I think it's good that shows dare to show where they stand and make hints, make jokes or whatever. It's done all the time as said above with other celebrities so why not politicians. I think it makes you open your eyes a bit. Then of course it can go too far and that's not ok in my book. That's just tasteless and so unnecessary. This girl saying how she feels is also very brave, and I hope she doesn't gets smashed for that.

Everyone's entitled to their own opinion, I guess. But it's just a TV show, saying that someone will go to hell isn't as bad as when the characters roleplay being God, as far as I'm concerned the latter is muuuuuuuuuuuuch worse.

This is not the first comment Dean has made along these lines. It's just that this one was not at all subtle. I LOVED it. My only hope is that Jensen himself enjoyed saying the line. I worry about Texans. ;-)

Dick Cheney has been around American politics for decades, and it's reasonable to say that where there are bombs, where there is a huge budget for war machinery, where there's a guy who got five deferments to keep his ass out of Vietnam but who is all too willing to send other Americans to die in a foreign country - Dick Cheney is nearby. This is not opinion, it's fact.

That said, that woman had the right to make her own opinion known. I think she overreacted, but hey, it's a free country, as they like to say. Free for her to stop watching the show if it bothers her, free for Kripke and the writers to put in lines like that if they like (and they know very well they could get in trouble with the suits).

She's certainly entitled to her opinion, but why she should assume or demand that TV shows be apolitical? If the writers feel that Dean is a character who would find Cheney evil, then why can't he express that? Being an elected official doesn't automatically make someone above criticism.

Exactly! There are so many jokes about politicians, as well as celebrities, in all kinds of American TV shows, I'm surprised when one is singled out. It would have been more out of character for Dean to get all defensive and go, "What are you saying!?!" than to ask, "He one of yours?"

I get the feeling that in many ways Sam and Dean don't have much time to keep up with politics, but it's pretty well known that a lot of Americans are dissatisfied with the current Administration. I think there are always a lot of Americans who are dissatisfied with each Administration, but this time it seems to be statistically higher. They obviously don't vote (or let's say I would be amazed if they went to the trouble of establishing fake identities and a fake address in order to vote), but I think the show's established that in their own way, they are fighting a way, and have been for years. Just because it's one that the vast majority of the country isn't even aware of doesn't mean they're not risking their lives every day for people they don't know, and they rarely get thanks or any type of recognition for it. So in this context, I feel that yes, Dean does have a right to say something like that. Freedom of speech aside, he's in a different position than most of us (and yes, I remember he's a fictional character) to make those types of comments. Dean sees a lot of things in terms of black and white, good and evil, with very broad lines being painted. I don't think the character, or the producers, actors, writers, etc., are unpatriotic, I think they just occasionally take the opportunity to express their opinions. They just happen to have a bigger forum for that expression.

Earlier on in the show, when I was new to SPN and not yet really *into* it, I used to think that there was no depth to the show. It was actually after 'Dead in the Water' ( which happens to be Jensen's favourite episode, too ) that really turned me in. That, and the excellent fics around that opened up the many and complex layers of the Winchesters. God, I love the show.

As an American, I defend the lady's right to say whatever she thinks is right, whether I agree with her or not. By the same token, I support the right of the producers and writers of that program to voice their opinions in the context of their program. To me, the character of Dean would always say what he thinks, in no uncertain terms, and I'm very sure he'd have a scathing opinion of the current administration.
