I'm still a little bit unclear on the concept of hotlinking and bandwidths. So, if I do *this*, does that mean I'm hotlinking?

Sorry [livejournal.com profile] annwyn55, I know you've explained it to me before but I couldn't find that post, and what can I say, I'm a moron.

Help?

Oh and in case anyone's wondering, this is Maxis.

ETA Okay, thanks Annwyn, and Toni, I have edited out the hotlink, and I think I've made the site exceed its bandwidth ( did I get that term correct? )

Anyway, the pic is from this site, where there're A LOT of pics of young Jensen which I've never seen before. Hopefully the site would be up again soon.

Firstfirstfirst - I got the calendar, darlin'! Thank you ever so much! The gardens are beautiful. :) Just for that, you get whatever you want from me - icon, lj bg (anything except fic - I'm blocked :)).

Yep, you're hotlinking. *spanks you* You've taken the original pic's url and pasted it into your post. See, bandwidth just means "the amount of data that can be passed along a communications channel in a given amount of time." If the account you took the pic from doesn't have much allowable bandwidth, then every time someone looks at the pic or even clicks on your post, that account's bandwidth is lessened by an approximate amount. In other cases it matters mainly because you're "stealing" viewers from the site (without having to pay for its upkeep), and people don't like that, of course.

Best way to make sure you're on the side of the angels is to save it to your photobucket account and post from there.

May I please quickly pop in and ask something else?
A side is actually made for visitors to watch. So when I post a link to the whole side, where I can find the picture, the effect is actually the same, but it's not hotlinking, is that right?

Although it may seem so, the passing/stealing of info (which is the consideration here) isn't the same. When you link to the site, you're using the public domain address and you're not taking anything from the site, but merely directing people there. It's a passive action.

With hot-linking, you would right-click on the pic at the site, go to its properties and copy the pic address. That url leads to an internal (images) directory in the site itself, so "bandwidth" is needed to access it, and the owner of the site gets "burned". :)

I didn't actually do that. What I did was google up his pics, that pic came up and I just c/p the link.

Phew, I just checked the site. It's up again now *wipes brows*

Yeah - that's another way to do it, and that's why hotlinking was so prevalent in the early days of google. It was so easy. *g*

I think the site's owner should thank you for that. Is that right?

She must be wondering about the sudden increase in the traffic there :D

Ok, thank you!
And now as always when you think you're done, there is someone who asks the same question again from another side:
I wonder why not everyone hosts their pictures just on photobucket or any free page where bandwidth doesn't matter. I guess it's not possible for some websides to store the photos somewhere else then on their own server? Or are there any limitations on photobucket as well?

Date: 2008-02-19 06:52 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] annwyn55.livejournal.com
Bandwidth does matter when the photo-hosting service is free. I haven't had a free account in a while, but let's see if I can remember how it goes: Um - the free photobucket account is only allowed 20 (or 25?) gigabytes(GB) of bandwidth per month. If the picture you host on there and post on your lj is 40 kilobytes(K)in size, and say - 100 people click on the lj-cut and look at it, that means that in the process of delivering that image info to your lj, 4000K or 4.0GB of your total monthly bandwidth has been used. That's why photobucket has size restrictions on free accounts. When you hit your limit, you won't be able to upload or download anything else. Oh - and allowable bandwidth is very different from album size.

When you have a paid account, like I do, you still have an allowable bandwidth, but they don't meter it.

It's possible that some websites use photo-hosting services instead of caching the pics in their site directories, but everything viewed on the web uses bandwidth.

Ah, now I see! I didn't know that they have a limit too! Thank you very much!

I've taken off the hotlink and put up the link to the main page instead. Am I still hotlinking? And omg, that site is "currently unavailable" *head-desk*

So, same question that [livejournal.com profile] aredhelebenesse was asking, it's not hotlinking when we link to the whole site, right?

From: [identity profile] annwyn55.livejournal.com
*tsk* You probably used up its bandwidth for the month. Heheh. Just kidding. :)

Nope. I replied to her question - it isn't hotlinking.

And I'm glad that you got the calender safely! Those gardens totally made me think of you!

Don't I wish I could have a garden just as nice! Although--- man, they must be a lot of work, and I wouldn't have time for LJ. :( I may as well just look and enjoy.

I think I've brought the site down omg.

Anyway, go look at the main page ( see my ETA ) once it's up again, there's a whole lot of yummy Jensen's pics up there!

That's something I wondered also all time! I knew that I have to put a pic on my own server, but not the reason why. Gladly [livejournal.com profile] annwyn55 explained it so well!
