Title : Some Things Need To Be Said, Some Things Don't.
Rating : G
Fandom : Supernatural. Coda to 'Long Distance Call'. Spoilerish.
Word count : 366
Disclaimer : I own nothing.
Summary : Sam and Dean have a talk. And Sam says what needs saying.
“He said he loved me.”
“What? Who?” Sam looks up from his laptop, rubbing at his eyes tiredly. He didn’t get much sleep the night before, tossing and turning in his bed, thinking about what had happened. And his whole body aches like crazy. He has taken two Advils which do not seem to do anything. Dean looks even worse than him, sitting at the end of his bed, shoulders slumped, dejection written clearly all over him.
“Dad. That thing. Whatever. He said he loved me.” Dean looks down at his clapsed hands, his expression unreadable.
Sam doesn't say anything, waiting for Dean to say more.
Dean sighs.
“I should have known there and then that it wasn’t him,” he laughs. It sounds bitter.
“Dad .. all his life, he never said that to us. Maybe he did, before Mum died, I can’t remember, but never after.”
Sam gets up from the table and goes to sit on the bed beside his brother, close, shoulders and hips touching. He chooses his words carefully.
“Dean, you know Dad loved us, loved you. God, Dean, you knew him better than I do. He did the best he could, you know that.”
“Yeah, I do. I guess I had been wanting him to say that like, forever. And that thing knew it, knew which buttons to push. Knew that I would do anything after that. Pathetic, huh?”
Sam sighs. The silence stretches between them.
“Dean?” He hesitates.
Dean grunts.
Sam takes a deep breath, thinking, It's now or never.
“DeanIloveyou,” he says in a rush. There. He has said it. He can feel his face getting red.
‘Huh?” Dean is looking at him weirdly, like he has been talking in some foreign language or something.
“You’re right. The chicks are right. These things need to be said. So, Dean. I. Love. You.”
“You’ve been watching too much Oprah.” But Dean looks … pleased, the tension easing out of his face somewhat. He gets up from the bed, grabbing the keys from the table.
“Come on, Samantha, lets go get some breakfast.”
Sam grins. Dean has not said he loved Sam, he's Dad’s son through and through. But Sam does not need Dean to say it now, not in words. Because he has been hearing it all his life.
Loud and clear.

Date: 2008-05-07 02:39 pm (UTC)The scene at the end of the show, Dean badly wanted to talk about it I think ( for a change! ), but he didn't quite know how, and Sam wasn't helping either ( *smacks him* ) so I just have to give him, them, this.
Thank you, sweetie :))

Oh Dean.
And I'm glad that you don't think it was too chick-flicky. I wanted Dean to say it, too, but he just couldn't and wouldn't!
Thank you so much for commenting :D

Date: 2008-05-07 08:43 pm (UTC)As a child who has never heard her parents or siblings say, "I love you," I'm losing it here. Not only that but you made this a perfect canon brother moment. I can hear exactly how Sam would say those words and how his face would flush. I can see Dean's body language and expressions through all of this, and feel the love there behind the "Samantha." You're so insightful and wonderful to write this. *sighs with love*
Please go to Vancouver and apply for a writer job with Show, like now.

Date: 2008-05-07 11:08 pm (UTC)Thank you so very much, Chloe. That's very high praise indeed!
I think John would be too depressed right after the fire, and later on, too obssessed with the hunt, to remember the fine touches of dealing with small children. But considering everything, the boys turned out alright. They both have their issues of course, esp Dean, but then, who doesn't?
can hear exactly how Sam would say those words and how his face would flush.
His nose would be twitching, too! :D
Thank you again, love, for the lovely comment *adores*

Date: 2008-05-09 12:15 am (UTC)Anyway, God, I was waiting and waiting for someone to write that part of the show because John telling Dean that he loved him and Dean believing him? Not that I think that he thought John didn't love them, just that in 'Devil's Trap', he knew that wasn't John, and yet he immediately believe it this time? Poor boy, he wanted to be saved so very much! And yeah, I think he needed to really hear it from Sam :))

Aww. I love these ending lines. Dean really has shown his love over and over throughout the years.

Date: 2009-05-31 07:06 pm (UTC)You do wonder if, or how often, John actually told his boys that he loved them. It's just not a *guy* thing to do. So Dean must certainly have wondered about "Dad" saying that to him over the phone.
It's nice that Sam finds the courage to blurt out the words, although he's embarrassed afterwards. And even though Dean shrugs it off (because he *has* to), you know hearing it meant a lot to him.
Thanks for sharing this!

Date: 2009-05-31 11:07 pm (UTC)After that episode, I couldn't keep from thinking on why Dean was so quick to believe that voice on the phone, was so willing to do as ordered when Sam was so sceptical. He didn't believe the YED in Devil's Trap. Poor man, he was caught in a very ... shall I say, vulnerable phase? And his conversation with "John" that night at the motel when he went into the bathroom while Sam was asleep, that was so heart-wrenching!
Thanks again for reading, you made my day :)
