layne67: (sam dean)
I really love reading the pre-Stanford fics; stories that tell of the two boys growing up in their far-from-normal lifestyle; Dean forced to grow up too fast with Sam looking up to Dean as the only constant in his life, no Mum and with a Dad who was mostly not around.

Here are two gorgeous fics that simply made my heart ache with its bittersweet telling of young Dean and Sam coping with what life threw at them.

Title :A Moment Of Normalcy (In Our Life Of Chaos)

Sam is seventeen and he has a school prom to go to. Dean helps out. Rips my heart out, this one.

So Dean had planned this. Had saved his money, probably by hustling pool, but that didn’t matter. Sam knew they were always hard up for money, and whenever Dean had a little extra he liked to go out and spend it at the nearest bar, picking up girls and relaxing with a beer and some shots. Except this time he hadn’t. This time he’d saved it for God knows how long, just so he would be able to give Sam this. One night of normalcy. For a second Sam almost turns back, wondering why the hell he’s going off to be the stand-in guy for some girl who can’t even remember his name when he has the best brother in the whole world waiting for him at home. But just then he’s at her house, and all rational thoughts are replaced by utter and plain panic.

In this next fic, Dean cooks to keep his family together.

Title : Red Beans and Rice
Author: [livejournal.com profile] janissa11

The story starts fluffy, with 9-year-old Sammy asking Dean to cook him red beans and rice. But it goes from sweet to right down heart-breaking when teen!Sam started to fight with John until the day Sam finally left.

One night the fight gets bad. He's tired of listening to Dad and Sam scream at each other - never listen to him, and if DEAN was a yeti he'd hear that racket and stay the hell away - so he goes outside, shoves his hands in his pockets after stowing a pistol in the back of his jeans, and just walks a while. Not even a supper table would fix this shit, he thinks. Used to be, food was kind of an excuse for them all to sit down, hang out some, talk about various shit. Be a family. Now, though, dinners are silent, uncomfortable, when they're not actually just continuations of arguments already begun.

And the sequel to 'Red Beans and Rice', Lasagna. This is a post-John fic, Dean remembers the time when John asked him to make lasagna and he refused.

“Dad, you know, he’s not used to me just laying it out like that, not gonna happen. So he starts saying how we could both use a homecooked meal and whatever, and I looked at him and I said, ‘I cooked for Sammy. And that was fine, Dad, that was great. Peachy.’” He’s looking at the drapes again, eyes far away as Neptune. He licks his dry lips. “’But he ain’t here anymore, and I’m not your goddamn wife. Go find a diner.’”
