I've heard people who've watched the preview saying that the premier is set to look really good. I can't wait!!

I'll be back on LJ proper tomorrow. Still on fly-by post today, or rather, crawl-by *glares at dial-up*

4. 'Children Shouldn't Play With Dead Things'.

This scene starts with Dean driving, silent, none of his usual classic rock playing in the background. Sam's glancing at him on and off. Dean pulls over by the roadside, a very scenic place with a deep ravine to on one side and pine trees on the other.
Photobucket

Dean sits on the hood, Sam follows him, looking concerned.
Photobucket

They talk. Or rather, Dean talks.
Dean : "I'm sorry."
Sam : "For what?"
Dean : "The way I've been acting." ( That trembling lower lip again omg )

Dean says it was his fault that John's gone. He made a full recovery, and John died, the Colt was gone and Dad's dead because of me.

Dean: "You and Dad, you're the most important people in my life. I never should have come back. I was dead and I should have stayed dead. You wanted to know how I was feeling ... What could you possibly say to make that all right?"

Photobucket

Sam has no answer to that. The camera pans up showing them standing side by side, leaning against the front of the Impala.
Photobucket

So many things that I love about this scene. So many. Dean finally opening up to Sam on what he has kept bottled up all this while since John died. Things that Sam has been pestering him to talk about, telling Dean that he's spinning out of control with all the things that Dean kept inside. Dean saying that John would have been alive if not for him, that he's not worth whatever deal John made with the demon. Dean basically saying that he's nothing. And that there's nothing Sam could say about that.

I like it that Sam remained silent after that. It would have spoiled the sombre mood if he started talking then, and I'm quite sure Sam actually had plenty to say. But it wasn't the right time. Dean had talked, and that's good enough. Because getting Dean to talk, really talk is not easy. Especially when it comes to his feelings.

I love hearing what happened after that take. Jensen just took off, alone, apparently unable to shake off the Dean-angst.And Jared followed him. He later said in interviews that he sat with Jensen, telling him that Jensen did good. Knowing Jared I bet he had said a lot more, but that's between him and Jensen. We can only imagine what was really said then.

And if you hadn't read [livejournal.com profile] eight_horizon's The Crying Game, do so now! J2 rps on how Jared and Jensen deal with the shooting of this scene, among others.

It's one of the scenes that really tugged at my heart-strings, Julia. And what happened after even more so. Oh Dean ... oh Jensen ...

I'll grant you that scene is good but better than the one my lj pic is from? I think not!

Not in the dramatic sense, no, but Dean pouring his heart out to Sam like that, baring his soul so to speak, that really got to the sentimental part of me.

One of the things I wish Sam would say to him, at some point, is something like, "I'm glad it was him and not you," or "I'd rather have you with me." I'm sure Dean knows that already, but it might be good for him to actually hear Sam say it.

I think Sam did, didn't he? Only not in this episode, but I can't remember when he said that. Some time in season 3, I think. But maybe it's in the fanfics, I sometimes got confused with what's cannon and what's fannon lol.

I think it might have been a fic, but it could have been an episode. I suppose that wasn't the right time to say it, but I'd have said it anyway. :)

Now that I think about it, in one of the last episodes, maybe Time Is On My Side, Dean gives some kind of speech about he's the only one that can save him, and when Sam adds, "And me," Dean got a little huffy about it. This is one reason I don't like sarcasm/irony, etc., it's hard for me to tell sometimes when someone is being serious or making a joke. Maybe Dean just wished he hadn't said what just came out of his mouth, and was trying to deflect Sam from continuing the conversation, but it came across (to me) like he was completely dismissing the idea that Sam could save him.

But then, I'm pretty sure I take a lot more offense at some of the things the guys say to each other than they do. They can often shrug it off, or recognize that it's the same kind of "teasing" they've been doing all their lives. I tend to take hurtful things as being meant to be hurtful, because that's the way my family did things. Or at least, if they were joking around, there was nothing to balance it out to show they didn't mean it as hurtful. So I'm constantly getting annoyed at Dean or Sam for being insensitive, when a lot of the time it's probably like water off a duck's back.

I just had to re-watch this episode. I am looking forward to your posts just as much as I am looking forward to the series (if not more even).

Where did you find out what happened after this scene was taken?? I've been searching my DVDs and I've come up with nothing. :((

Thank you, C!!

We knew about that last part from SPN news, reports and various interviews. They didn't mention it in the DVD, much to my disappointment too!

OMG this is one of my all time fave scenes! I love the whole episode actually, I think it's just excellently written. "Now what could you possibly say to make that all right?" Excellent. And Jensen really shines here.

I agree. I think his voice broke during that line. Also the slight nod of his head during Sam's silence.

I can see why Jensen had to take a walk.

From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
That was a very intense scene for him. God knows how Jensen prepared himself for that. They must have rehearsed the lines together, and we know how those two are always goofing it up, but I somehow can't imagine them goofing around when rehearsing this.

What breaks my heart the most is that Dean is so convinced that John made a mistake in making that deal, that his life is not worthy of John's sacrifice, and that eats him up. That one final momet in AHBL2 when he saw John for the last time, when John gave him that final nod of approval just before he flcikered out, God, I felt like hugging John and saying a big thank you to him, because by God, Dean needed that.

Date: 2008-09-15 03:02 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] vshendria.livejournal.com
Yes, but you can't make everything all right with one approving word. The damage was done when John let Dean grow up to believe that his worth depended on his ability to take care of others. He couldn't forgive John for sacrificing himself because he measures his worth by the well-being of his father and his brother. And he couldn't forgive himself for letting Sam die.

And yeah, some of that is John's fault. He loved his boys but he screwed up. Sorry, but there it is.

And Dean, poor boy, needs major therapy.

Date: 2008-09-15 04:07 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] prism2me.livejournal.com
The ability to take care of others, or the ability to take care of Sam? I think there is some difference here. I think if it had been anyone other than Sam, Dean probably would have seen it as collateral damage.

I sometimes wonder if Dean's single-mindedness protection of Sam is because of John's orders, or is it because he geniunely cares about Sam.

BOTH!!!!!!!!!! And he followed John's orders because he loved John.

Yeah...you're right. The hug in AHBL2 says it all.

Speaking of hugs, I think the hug in Mystery Spot is Jared's revenge. Both the hugs in AHBL2 and MS had to hurt. LOL.

From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
They said it was unscripted, the 'Mystery Spot' hug. I wonder whether it was only Jared, hugging Dean the way he did, or did the two of them plan it together? If Jensen didn't know about it, he sure did keep his cool, the way he did when Lisa kissed him in 'The Kid is Alright'. I heard Jensen didn't know about the kiss until it was done!

I would say, the ability to care for his family first. But he does care about others. He hunts to help people, not for revenge. (And also because it's the only thing he knows.)

I think, re Dean's protectiveness, that it's both: John's orders and that he loves Sam. The two are inseparable. His entire sense of self is bound up in keeping his family safe, because he had his mother ripped away at such a formative age. He had only a father who was dealing with his own grief and obsession and therefore probably a little distracted. I imagine John alternately training Dean hard and then kind of leaving him be. Not to mention leaving him in charge of Sam when he was just a child himself! The more Dean proved himself reliable, the more John relied on him.

I could go on and on, but I gotta go to class!

Wow, this scene is perfect quintessence of this ep. I remember how i watched it for the first time. Those words Dean repeat through the ep was so right and obvious - 'what's dead should stay dead' that i never see it coming - that he said it about himself! Silly me thought it was all about dead girl and her father... and then was that scene...
I think it was one of the best tv moments of all time. The way how they film it, the way how dialogue (actually monologue) was written and how the scene was acted. You just feel it - all tensions and emotions tearing Dean apart...

Date: 2008-09-15 08:36 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
I've felt it from the beginning of the episode, that it was all about Dean. And Sam felt it, too, the way he kept looking at Dean when Dean was questioning the girl's father. And Sam had to tell Dean to calm down when Dean got too agitated!

As usual, superb performance by Jensen here. Guh, he should have been nominated for an Emmy many times over!!

Date: 2008-09-15 12:18 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] leelust.livejournal.com
I know i felt that too but i didn't expect him to say it out loud - it was surprise for me... and i think it's good Sam didn't say anything. Cos what can you say to that? Sure when the moment broken and time passed you can find some words but in that very moment? There are no words to diminish Dean's pain...

he should have been nominated for an Emmy many times over!!
It's not even funny anymore how those arrogant mediocre people afraid to even nominate him. They're like robots - continue to give awards to the same actors when there are plenty of new names and faces around - talented people, not ordinary people. And then they wonder why people refuse to watch Emmys and Oscars... Huh...

This was such an amazing scene, especially coupled with what we heard about Jensen taking off by himself.

Dean has such a hard time opening up to Sam, so this was a huge moment for them both. I agree, I think Sam had plenty to say, but realised that now wasn't the time, that he'd be doing more damage by speaking than not. I love the fact that we can see tears welling up in Sam's eyes, but he manages to contain them because, again, that wasn't what Dean needed right then.

Excellent choice, Layne :)

Two more scenes, two more days, and then we would have our boys back!!!!!!!!

Jensen is such a total opposite of Dean, usually, but in this scene I have a feeling that Jensen's more or less playing himself, which is probably why he found it hard to shake off Dean's emo there.

But then Dean won't be the Dean that we love and angst-ed over if he was not the Dean that he is - insecure, vulnerable, all hidden behind his walls of false cockiness and bravado, if you know what I mean. I started out not really liking him, you know, it took me quite some time before I discovered the real Dean!

i totally know what you mean.
see i was a dean girl from the start, it was his badassery (thats not a word but whatever) that i was drawn to and his love for his dad and his brother. Then as the show went along we got to see that he had insecurities and hide all of that.
