An old article which I've only just read today. As said by a person who knew young Jensen in Richardson.

“No, I never spoke to him. He never talked to anybody. I seriously thought there was something wrong with him,” she explained. “He stared at me for about three years of my life. Every time I saw him. He just stared. -- One time, after years of this, I think I was 15 or so, I finally just went up to him and said, ‘Are you ever going to talk to me?’ and he stuttered something unintelligible and walked off. Seriously, he was practically mute.”

I also told her how Kristin Vietch from the E! Channel described Jensen to me once as “PAINFULLY, PAINFULLY shy… possibly the shyest celebrity [she's] ever met.” Anne said that sounded like the guy she knew, relating how she hadn’t even known what he was up to these days until she was channel flipping a few years ago and saw him on Smallville, “and then I nearly fell out of my chair. I was like, oh, my God, it’s the hot mute guy from my old church! How did that guy even become an actor???! …Damn, he’s still super hot, too.”

Gosh, is it even possible to love him even MORE? There's that fan's account on seeing him at the con, where she said the Jensen that she talked to was so different than the public!Jensen. Quiet and shy and gentle, guh, there's just something about shy!Jensen that turns me into mush. MUSH, I tell you! And yeah, it's a wonder how and why he went into acting. He must have loved acting so much, for him to be able to conquer his shyness and be the Jensen that we see in public.

And I'm thinking that Jared must have been very good for him. I think he said in an interview somewhere that Jared brought him out of his shell and he in his turn tethered Jared to the ground.

omfg i know right!
it just makes me want to be all protective of him, which is crazy because i'm the shy quiet type too.

a lot of people go into acting to try and help get over the shyness (damn why did i never think of that lol)... i'vd heard that story from a handful of celebs i've liked how they were ridic shy and that they went into theater/acting to help them try and get out of their shell.

This is old story and i think it's mostly about the impression that chick had when she was 15. I mean i love shy!Jensen but i think he's not that shy as people use to think of him. Also, Kristin? Excuse me but she's an idiot.
All in all i think Jared is good for him, yes. Maybe not bringing his out of his shell or something but as good friend.

I don't know him personally so I can't say whether or not he is or is not shy. My impression of him is what I gathered from his public apearances, the interviews, what fans who have met him said, so yeah, my impression of him is he is an endearingly shy guy, and to have it said in black white makes me very happy! Some people like their idols to be hot and sexy, some like them to be funny and outgoing, and some, like me, love it when they're quiet and shy and sweet!

And I believe the woman in the interview knew him for years, and not only when she was 15?

that's why i think him and jared are so good for each other and why people can see it so easily. jensen has helped jared to become a better actor(i think)and jared has helped jensen become a better person all around. not that he was bad before jared, it's just you can see the difference.

Dean is the polar opposite to Jensen, and Sam to Jared. Even my hubby commented on that when we were watching that Paley forum, and he said Jared is like Dean, and Jensen is like Sam. And when I made him watch Jensen singing 'Crazy Love' with Jason Mann on YouTube, the first thing hubby said was "He's scared!"

And I'm craving for some mute!Jensen fic now ;)

This is so cuuuuute. How much do I love that this girl thought there was something wrong with him? I mean, obviously there's not, and he's certaintly not neartly as shy now (though who knows how much is public persona and what isn't, acting on and off screen, and remember that whole thing with the Playboy girlfriend spilling the beans on his sex life and he was so embarrassed? Poor baby!). But this is one of my favorite fic!Jensens, shy and sweet and awkward, and I just want to hug him and squeeze him, and I DO think Jared has had a positive influence on him in this respect..

Do you happen to know the interview where Jensen says that?

I think Jensen is shy -- a lot of his body language says so, to me. A lot of the time in interviews he doesn't make full eye contact with the camera or the interviewer. He fidgets a lot, crossing his arms, shuffling his feet, stuff like that.

Jared does some of that stuff too but I think it's just his energy that makes him do it. Jensen a lot of times looks somewhat uncomfortable. He isn't rude, just unable to totally let go and just be himself.

Now, around people he likes/is familiar with, I have no doubt he's loud and outspoken and more comfortable.

It's the way I am, at least. Shy around ones I don't know or lots of people, comfortable with ones I do know.

Awww, I love that you're so squeeful about these two boys. I wish I could get the squee, too, but it's eluded me so far. And I love your post here about Jensen being shy to the point of being mute. So many of us can identify with that tongue-tied shyness, I feel sure.

Go on, rec me a fic - a nice, gentle, falling into a groove fic, and remind me which one is which - I can never remember!

O-kaay let me see. Uhm, btw, you *are* familiar with the basic premise of the story? A wife killed by a demon, a husband obssessed with hunting down the thing that killed his wife, dragging his two kids all across the country with him, basically leaving his older child ( Dean ) to practically raise his younger brother ( Sam ) by himself. The story proper started when the father went missing, and Dean and Sam went searching for their father.

Dean is the shorter one :)

I chose these because they described the family dynamics pretty well, what John ( the father ) is to Sam and Dean, and what Sam and Dean are to each other.

I think it's actually quite common for actors to be extremely shy people -- it seems impossible because we expect anyone who goes into such a public profession to be a natural extrovert but very often they're drawn to acting specifically because it allows them to become "someone else" and express themselves in a way that they can't on their own. I think that being very introverted can probably make for a better actor -- it allows the character's personality to come through instead of the actor's. I would imagine that an actor who's got a very bold, extroverted personality would find it difficult to suppress that in order to play someone completely different from themselves.

What's unfortunate is that people sometimes interpret that shyness as being standoffish or unfriendly. I know I've heard some scattered reports from cons that Jensen's something of a dick but I don't believe it. There's not a single person who's worked with him who doesn't have great things to say about him as an actor and as a person and it's very obvious from behind-the-scenes footage (and from the way he interacts with Jared and other co-stars) that he's very friendly, warm and personable with people that he knows. I think it's just among strangers that he kind of closes himself off and meeting 800 - 1,000 strangers at once (like at a con) must really make him go into self-defense mode. It's a shame that some people choose to judge him for that. I understand the reaction really well because I have very, very often had people make comments to me like, "When I first met you I thought you were a total bitch," but I just tend to be very quiet around people I don't know.

My thoughts exactly. When I first came into this fandom, I had no idea at all that brash, snarky Dean was actually the quieter of the pair in RL. It never fails to amaze him how Jensen could transform himself into Dean, who's poles apart to his RL persona.
