Here's a heads up for something rec'd by [livejournal.com profile] princessofg

Here's a taste:

Academics are basically fans who are getting paid to analyze and obsess over their chosen subjects in ways not dissimilar from what goes on in fandom. I think the primary differences are formality, and available language: academia has very formal modes of transmitting knowledge, and a very specific language; fandom has an enormous variety of modes and languages to choose from, and "academic" is just one option among many. But really, many of the issues that fans are concerned with are identical to issues academics are concerned with.

My Wincest article is basically a ship manifesto: Sam and Dean are TOTALLY DOING IT OMG, and here's some awesome stories where they're TOTALLY DOING IT, because they SO ARE. Just dressed in academic language, that's all. It would be just fine for a fan meta community, especially if I add pictures of shirtless Jared to better illustrate my argument! (Actually, I think all academic articles should include pictures of shirtless Jared, just because.)

:D
