Which means I'll only get to download it on Saturday. And that probably means I'll only be able to watch it on Monday since I'm usually away during the weekends. Oh well, since I'm not that excited to see Dean playing house ( unless it's with Sam ), and that is NOT a spoiler btw, I know NOTHING about season 6, that's just my speculation, and oh boy, am I dreading that particular storyline ...

I felt the same way waiting for season 3 to begin, knowing nothing about Ruby and Bela back then, what they'd be to Sam and Dean, and irony of irony, it turned out that I liked both Bela and Ruby! The first Ruby that is.

Anyway, I was thinking that I really need to re-connect with the SamandDean love, it being somewhat diminished in the past two seasons. Oh I still love Supernatural, and I'm still obsessed with them, especially the SamandDean from seasons 1 to 3, and I especially miss pre-season 4 Sam, but ... I have to look long and hard to find those moments between them. Those moments that were in every episode, heck, in every scene of them together in the first three seasons but so rare and therefore so precious, in the last 2 seasons. But they were there, and these are the ones that spoke to me.

1. Metamorphosis. Yes, they were fighting in this scene and Dean punched Sam on the face. But I didn't get the "hate" vibe here that I got in that other fight scene, you know which one. Sam waiting for Dean to come back, I bet he hadn't been sleeping the whole night. Dean coming back and he started packing his stuff and Sam went Dean ... That scene made me think of a fighting married couple with one spouse finding out that the other had cheated on him lol.
Photobucket

Saved by the bell, literally. I've no idea whether Dean really meant to leave Sam. I'm thinking that it was just for show, if he wanted to leave he would have done so, phonecall or no phone call. Sam answering the phone and saying that it wasn't a good time with his face all screwed up ( and I think he was nearly in tears? ) tore at my heart.
Photobucket

2. Another scene from Metamorphosis. I lovelovelove this scene so very much. I truly felt Sam's desperation at being locked in the closet while Dean was out there with the monster, unconscious.
Photobucket

And when Sam said If you hurt him ... *whimpers*
Photobucket

3. Monster Movie. I love the whole episode! It's the one episode which I got the season-123 feel to it, if you know what I mean. With the exception of that tiny glitch when Sam said that he went to see a movie while Dean was in hell ( oh boy, I felt like strangling the writers for that particular line, it wasn't remotely funny dang it ), Sam and Dean were at their SamandDean best there. My favourite scene is the end scene, after Dean kissed Jamie. It reminded me a bit of the end scene in Hollywood Babylon after Dean got out of Tara's trailer. So much love!
Photobucket

Awwwww ... this look that Sam threw at Dean - pure affection! *draws hearts*
Photobucket

4. On The Head Of A Pin. The angst here omg. Sam's pain, his helplessness. This almost rivals the scene from In My Time Of Dying when Sam looked in on Dean being resuscitated. I like to think that Sam was there when Dean woke up, that he was the first person that Dean saw when he opened his eyes. I wish I knew what was running through Sam's head at that time!
Photobucket

5. And lastly. That call from Sam in The End. The one where Dean refused to get back together with his brother. Made me think of that phone call in Scarecrow but while that made me feel all warm and fuzzy, this broke my heart to pieces. Dean's agony, Sam failing to persuade Dean. But even with all that, I felt the love and connection between them. Dean's What we have between us - love etc etc *cries*

Will we be getting the SamandDean epic love back in Season 6? I really and truly hope so. I adore Castiel and I love what he is to Dean, but I wonder if his character appeared during the first three seasons, would I have loved him the same way? Probably not.

Three more days and I'd say my feeling is about 70% dread and 30% anticipation. And from [livejournal.com profile] drvsilla's fun polls here, my colours with regard to season 6 premier range from beige to vanilla to sepia lol.

What more do people out there need to convince themselves that there is love between these two? Dean said it themselves in The End. There is no way there's a place for any other people/angels/whatever. :/

There was love between them. It's just that, more often than not, I need to go back to the earlier seasons to get it. Except for those moments above of course.

I was all 'meh' waiting for the new season to start, and then I saw the promos.

I am now firmly on the SQUEE side of the fence.

Why isn't it Saturday yet?

p/s Thanks for this entry, by the way. I now have a burning need to rewatch Metamorphosis, despite it not being one of my fave eps.

I haven't seen any of the promos but I don't quite know what to think, half of my flist seems to be squeeing about it and the other half ... not very much!

Give me a tiny clue - is it about Dean or Sam or both of them?

The monster in Metamorphosis was gross ( yucks! ) but I love the dynamics between them in it, I felt the love there!

Hehe, you're one of couple of people on my flist who still tries to see the bond and the love. I'm not one of them and i don't believe in bond anymore so i'm glad to see Dean playing house and after seeing latest promos i finalle feel squee about new season.

The thing is, I love the Sam and Dean of the earlier seasons so much that it really hurt to see the distance between them. Whenever I re-watch the episodes from the first 3 seasons, the story and the brothers ( Sam especially ) are like, completely different!

Date: 2010-09-24 12:04 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] leelust.livejournal.com
But that's the thing - through S4 and especially S5 i was hoping they resolve some issues between the brothers and will make their relationship healthy. But no. They made me hate Sam to the point this character is irreparable for me.
I agree Sam from S1-3 looked different but there still were a lot of opportunities to let him grow and to fix things for the brothers. Why they chose to whitewash them instead is beyond me.
Anyway, after the last Jensen interview i'm not sure i'll watch S6. if even such a team player Jensen isn't happy about the show anymore there's a guarantee i won't be happy about it either.

Date: 2010-09-24 01:39 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
Oh dear, Jensen said that? That's bleak ... :((

Date: 2010-09-24 03:51 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rieyll.livejournal.com
I'm pretty sure Jensen didn't say he was unhappy about the show. He said that he didn't really like the version of Dean that the writers wrote, but he's said that he'd put his own spin on it.

That's probably a bit confusing, but I wasn't sure how much of the spoilers for the new season are you aware of, so I don't wanna be the one to spoil you!

I'm really hoping they'll take the boys back to the dynamic they had during those first seasons, but I'm not very hopeful. They don't have Raelle Tucker anymore, and she was the one who wrote the most family-intense stories for them. She really got into the emotional depths of their relationship.

Oh yes, Raelle Tucker. True Blood is so lucky to have her on board!

SPN for me, at least in seasons 4 and 5, work best when I don't have any expectation of it, so probably season 6 is going to surprise me!

That's me as well. Season 6? I'll wait and see. I think the writing went so wrong before that I can't take it seriously anymore. Here's hoping we get back to what make it good.

A very wish man is Jensen.

I saw someone on my flist mentioned in passing that he didn't like that Dean was written "soft" for season 6. I don't mind that actually but not when he's "soft" with anyone other than Sam :/

Damn! I really should not find that Dean unconscious scene (with blood seeping underneath his head) in Metamorphosis hot, but I do... *shamed*

Yes, yes! Sam's "if you hurt him..." there made my heart aflutter as well.

Sam sitting next to Dean's hospital bed in OtHoaP was so much love for me too. That and Sam's growling demand of Castiel to "fix Dean, now" both made me choke up a little. FYI, I don't care what they showed on screen, I'm convinced Sam was there sitting next to Dean's bed anxiously peering down at him when Dean first opened his eyes. *g*

Hee, I loved "Monster Movie" too. And I loved that exchange about the movie. I dunno, there's just something adorable about Dean where he was one moment indignant at his brother went to see a movie without him, then the next moment, he's attention was on the big pretzel!

And in season 5, I actually think there's a lot bromance moments. Even when they were at odds with each other, there's that undercurrent which I totally dig. Then there's the overt moment in Point of No Return, and the firework scene in Swan Song. I maybe a minority here, but in my opinion, as the seasons went on, the bromance became more mature and deeper. =p

Yes oh yes, Dean lying unconcious in Metamorphosis was beyond hot! There was just something so wanton in the way Jensen let himself sprawl bonelessly on the table with his face looking just. like. that. And of course, he just had to part his lips, can't blame the monster for wanting to take a bite out of that! ;D

That part when Sam mentioned he watched the movie ( what movie was it? Batman? ), IDK, I think we were supposed to take it in the spirit of the whole episode, which was light and arty and semi-comedic? Same thing as in Yellow Fever, it being another semi-comedic episode, so I guess we were not supposed to take Dean dying within 24 hours seriously, the way Sam seemed not to be too affected by it? Compare that to, say, Mystery Spot and Time Is On My Side, Sam was desperate to save Dean, and you didn't see that in YF!

the firework scene in Swan Song

Oh yes, that was a fine moment indeed. I love that one, too, should have included that scene, except that was a flashback to what/how they were before, you know, and that was young Sam there. But yes, I agree with you, the love between them in that particular scene was tangible and heart-breaking ( in a very good way ).

It was so nice to see this. I was so depressed with the way season 4 (and later 5) were progressing that I stopped watching and I haven't been able to bring myself to start again. Now, I just read the fanfic. I hated the whole angel/apocalypse storyline and don't want anything to do with Castiel. This was a show about the love between 2 brother and they killed that. Thanks for giving me some hope that the love wasn't entirely dead. if it comes back in Season 6, I might start watching again.

Thank God for fanfics! It was the fics that really got me hooked into SPN in the first place. I watched a couple of episodes, thought them good but I wasn't obsessed about them until I read the stories written around them.

I wasn't very happy with most of seasons 4 and 5 but having said that, I think some of the best episodes, surprisingly, came from those two seasons. The End for one, and Changing Channels. I love Monster At The End Of The Book too!

*chuckles*

If I had a dollar for every time you said how scared you were to watch an episode because you might hate it and then ended up liking it, I'd be a rich lady. ;-) Maybe you could take a nice long bubble bath to relax this weekend before viewing. Then I'll send my masseusse over. :-D

I think in 4 & 5, the producers/writers took on more than they could handle with the huge apocalypse plot, and then took so much of the rest of the time to do the self-indulgent self-referential episodes, the intricacy and depth of the Dean-Sam connection got lost in the process. I'm hoping that since we are beyond the apoca-crazy, the boys' relationship will stand out again. I won't comment on the "playing house" thing because I know what will happen and when.

Or maybe it'll suck and you'll hate it. Such is the unpredictability of TV. But if you're looking for something else to watch, I think you'd love BBC's "Being Human." Deep bonding/love/angst/humor among the lead characters.

And I thought I was the only one who loved "Metamorphosis"! So glad to learn I'm not alone. Such a great example of how the show can depict deep and angry conflict but huge love at the same time. I remember that most of the fangirls hated it with a passion.

Hee, I know!! Must be some sort of reverse psychology thing, I'm psyching myself up to not expect anything so that if the premier's halfway decent I'd be pleasantly surprised. Anyway, it's better than the other way round. There were at least a couple of episodes in which I was bouncing with excitement and expectation and the disappointment that I felt when they didn't deliver was way too depressing :(

Being Human, eh? I've seen that being talked about among some of my flist and I have been toying with starting on a new show. I watched White Collar but couldn't get beyond the pilot episode, Castle couldn't hold my interest much. I'll download Being Human!

The fangirls hated Metamorphosis because of the punch maybe? Heh, IDK, to me there was so much LOVE there and you put it very well - deep and angry conflict coloured with huge, huge love. I could watch those two scenes over and over, they resonate so much with me.

I remember much of the Metamorphosis hate was that the brothers were having a fight and that meant they didn't love each other anymore or would be forever apart or whatever. We're lucky we can see below the surface and understand that love and conflict aren't mutually exclusive. :-)

I used to have a boss whose motto was "keep expectations low." LOL You've reminded me of that, hee.

Thanks for this look at the SamandDean in S4-S5. How layered was Castiel's line in 5.01 demanding that Zachariah "put these boys back together"? I'm one who took heart - for lack of a better word - from all the tandem moments that continued occurring throughout the past two seasons. (Becky's "I love it when they talk at the same time" hits particularly close to home for me. *g*) It seems to me that if the message were really and truly that the bond was broken beyond repair, the boys would have lost that unconscious in sync quality. However, we continued to get scenes like Smith and Wesson falling into nonverbal teamwork swinging at a ghost, and Sam and Dean mirroring each other as they sat on a bench to ponder the possibility of Bigfoot, and even the apparent ease with which Sam was able to track Dean's "farewell tour" at the end of S5.

The doublemint twins are alive and well! I can't remember who did that particular picspam, or maybe it was a vid, but all those moments of love and affection between them that we took for granted before ... *sighs*

The doublemint twins are alive and well!

Heh, I'm not so sure we can go so far as to label it 'alive and well' since the text became so relentless about hurting and separating the boys. It's no wonder I absolutely clung to those twinned moments as subtextual evidence for the idea that, at its core, the bond still held. I'd definitely follow a link to any reminder of the boys' teamwork in action!

I miss the way things were between the boys in S1-S3.

There's so much emphasis on the angst, that they don't take the time to show us the brother's connection like they used to. It's hinted at, like them staring at the stars together, for hours, Dean's wink of love to Sam in PONR, Dean wanting to die after Sam jumped in the hole in Swan Song, the way the boys looked at each other right before Sam jumped. I see it when Dean rescued Sam in Sam Interrupted "You get away from him", and Sam rescued Dean in MBV "Let him go". And then there's Ash calling them "soulmates", and Zach saying they're "erotically co-dependent".

The writers need to get back to the vibe of the earlier seasons, and give us some banter and bro love.

I thought Ellen's line in one of the episdoes, I think it was 'Good God Y'All', was absolute priceless. Do you remember her commenting on what she saw as distance between the brothers? She said "What's the matter with you two? A girl got between you?" And I laughed outright at that, thinking that the writers were having their fun there. I think that was around when Jared started to get serious with GC. Heh, talk about art imitating life :)

It was more than just Ruby that got between the boys in S4, though she played a big part. It was also Castiel and the angels who helped turn the brothers against each other.
