Folie a Deux by [livejournal.com profile] zoemathemata, SPN, Sam/Dean -or- Jared/Jensen, R, 12,000 words.
Summary : At Lofty Pines Mental Institution, Jensen and Jared try to work through their delusions of being Dean and Sam Winchester.
-Or-
At Lofty Pines Mental Institution, Dean and Sam Winchester are being manipulated into thinking they’re Jensen and Jared
.

My heart sped up a bit when I saw this fic by [livejournal.com profile] zoemathemata came up. I love her Big Bang last year which was totally creepy and clever and engaging and you should totally read that if you hadn't already.

Folie a Deux is twisty and subtly scary, its undertone of sinisterness is not the in-your-face kind of sinister but more of the type that's ... subliminal with you not knowing who is who and what is what, making you want to read and read. And read. And her original character here is as awesome as the ones in her Cross Creek!

This sounds interesting the way you described it. I saw this before but I gave it a pass because I thought it was a J2 SPN crossover. But if you rec it, I'm sure I'd find it interesting too.

I don't believe I've read other things by this author before. What has she written, and what's it about?

I've only just recently discovered Zoemathemata. Her Big Bang last year ( the one I linked to above ) was the first of her fics that I read. She has written a lot of fics but so far I've only read that BB, one short ficlet and this, and they're all awesome. Her style of writing is really engaging and her characterizations are simply fantastic, not only of canon characters but the OCs as well. Her BB for instance, I love her OCs as much as I love her Sam and Dean! That BB is a case-fic by the way, it's gen but it might as well be wincest ( but without the sex ) with how protective they're of each other!

No, the story above is not a RL/SPN crossover. I'm not much of a fan of that genre either.

Thanks for the rec! The description intrigued me enough to take a peek, and I ended up being totally engrossed! I did skim through the slash parts, but this is possibly one of the most unique fics I've read!

I like the open ending which left us wondering about the guys!

Do give her BB 'Cross Creek' a try. It's a wonderful casefic and the supernatural part of it is very thrilling and *super* creepy and the brotherly love ( it's gen btw ) is awesome!

I'm reading it actually! But had to stop halfway through part 1, since work beckons. Bah.

But it looks really good so far! I LOVED 'The Shining' and having our boys in that type of situation? GIMME!!

I think it's probably one of Stephen King's most chilling books. Second to 'Salem's Lot'. I remember reading that book when I was at the university and I couldn't sleep with the lights off, and I dared not look at the windows!

It's a very intersting look at that paticular brand of mental illness - folie a deux, or shared psychosis. And the author wrote it so well!

Oh gosh, I read The Shining when I was in boarding school. And my dorm was right next to a rubber estate, so it was really dark and creepy outside at night. Everyone thought I was nuts to read that book in the dorm alone!

I'm sneaking in bits of Cross Creak while working, but this paragraph made me smile a little:

"It’s quiet. Oliver continues to spin his glass slowly. It makes a weird scratching sound against the table top, but it’s strangely soothing. Dean’s eyes flick over to Sam and Sam shrugs in return. Dean tips his head slightly, trying to push Sam to push Oliver and Sam shakes his head once. Dean rolls his eyes."

The boys's gestures are SO THEM! I can totally see them doing exactly this, especially Dean rolling his eyes. Spot on characterization so far!

I know, right? I read that fic knowing nothing about the author but the fic held my attention almost right from the start, and I really love Ollie and Fay.

ps You shouldn't read it alone at night heheh.
