I didn't know that they named typhoons after fruits as well. Or does the word 'durian' means something else in Tagalog, [livejournal.com profile] annwyn55? [livejournal.com profile] geniusartist?

Typhoon Durian lashes Philippines.

That's too near for comfort.

*shudders*

Hope your loved ones are okay, Annwyn and GA.

btw, for those of you who don't know it, a durian is this thorny fruit with delicious custard-like flesh that emits a strong, distinctive odour. Dubbed as the King of Fruit, you either hate it or love it. It may be expensive or cheap, depending on the season. And if you're buying it from a roadside stall, it also depends on the car that you drive. No kidding. And behold for those with Singapore plates, they'll rip you off in no time at all.

I have one tree in my yard. The durians that it bears are just so-so. But they're from my own tree so somehow they always manage to taste better than the bought ones.

On a completely different topic, the broadband that I'm using at home is currently down and the dial-up at my workplace ( I know, it's usually the other way round ) is frustratingly slow. It's quite a slow day this morning but the minute I logged on, the people started to come in droves. Not complaining but I'm very behind on my flist. I'll come back to your posts and fics, no worries, I'm a bit OC when it comes to reading my flist :))

Eeeek!! My husband saw your post! Now he'll be jonesing after durian, and I hate it. :( My olfactory and gustatory nerves are symbiotic, and I won't eat anything I don't like the smell of. Heh. Nice healthy specimens you have, though. It's supposed to be an aphrodisiac, did you know?

My family lives in Cebu, which is protected from the full force of typhoons by the outlying islands, so they're ok. My husband's brothers are in Manila, but they live in gated communities, so they should be fine. Thanks for worrying about them, though. *hugsthanks*

I miss storm-watching. There's something so awesomely terrifying about watching a typhoon rage around you. The stink of ozone, the actinic flash of lightning...

*sighs*

Do they sell durians in Canada? I bet they're expensive. The Siamese ones don't smell so bad. Heh, they don't smell at all and to some ( me included ), they're quite tasteless compared to the headache-inducing ones.

Aphrodisiac? No, I didn't know that. Heehee, then maybe you should buy hubby a basketful. But I have come acrossed articles that described the smell to be like women's private parts :P

I've never experienced typhoons before but I think I can understand the thrill of watching it.

Yeah, they are expensive, but at least the prices don't depend on how rich you are. :) And according to the durian afficionados here, fruit ripened in transit just doesn't stink taste the same.

And I dislike the smell already. I didn't need you to tell me that. ewww

oh,i've never seen a durian tree before, that's kind of cool! ;) I'm going to Thailand in January so will have to have some :)

But to get the full force of durians you have to try the Malaysian ones!!! The Thai ones are a bit "sanitized" methinks. Heheh, there's nothing like the headache, gastric and sore-throat - inducing Malaysian durians :D

I'm glad to hear that everything is fine with your family!!

In Italy we are so lucky not to have such terrifying forces of nature, so I never witnessed one. But as you said, it must be fascinating to watch, too.

*hugs*

Thank you for caring, my dear. Yes, everyone's fine.

You live in Lotus-Land, you know. :D Western Canada's pretty tame weather-wise too. Aren't we lucky? Storm-watching can be an almost spiritual experience though.

How do they taste? Are they tangy? Super sweet?

eeep, super typhoon! Hope the families of everyone we know is safe and sound!

They have a custard-y feel to it and are very sweet. A no-no for diabetics and people with hypertension, gastritis and migraines. And the smell, hee, you can smell it from a mile away. They're banned from most hotels and some put up signs "No Durians Allowed". Yup, King of Fruit indeed :D

Those are really interesting looking. I never heard of them before. Do you eat them raw? Cook them?

Date: 2006-12-01 03:55 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
It's usually eaten raw but it can also be made into all sort of things - cakes, pudding, ice-cream, pie. If my LJ-friends can come over here, I'll arrange a durian party :DD

Here are two interesting articles on durian.

What a strange, fascinating kind of fruit! I've never seen one before and I'm amazed by its thorny look!

About the other "Durian", I hope it doesn't cause too much harm. This natural phenomenon is so terrifying!

*hugs you*

I think ( I hope ) my country is quite safe from typhoons. We never had a major one before mainly because we're this small peninsular surrounded by Thailand, Indonesia and the Philipines. But then, you never know what can happen these days :/

A durian is huge and has a very strong smell that most airlines will refuse them otherwise I would have sent one to you, Mel!

Awww, you're so sweet! Thank you anyway, it's the thought that matters.

I've seen the pic you posted for Janet, what a strange fruit, indeed!

I hope you'll stay safe from typhoons, hon!

*hugs you!*

LOL! I've no idea whether durian has any other meaning aside from the fruit. :)

Thanks for your concern, babe. So far as I know, no one in my family was affected -- I would've heard about it. And since I haven't . . .

Someone with a warped sense of humour must have named that typhoon thus. Or else he loves durians very much!

Yay, a fellow durian-lover!! I love durian. But unfortunately my throat cannot stand too much of it. I'd get sore throat in no time at all if I indulge myself too much.

I still cannot get over the fact that someone would name a typhoon - Durian. I'd have trouble keeping a straight face I were the newsreader reading today's headlines.

But on a more sombre note, more than 100 are believed to have died in that typhoon ...

Exactly. What was on their mind when they named it Durian???? Might as well name it Peach or Apricot. Oxymoron. *sighs*

I just found this.

Scroll down for names of typhoon in the Western North Pacific Area. Seems that the Thais are the ones responsible for calling it Durian.

And you guys named typhoons Nangka and Mawar! *giggles* Oh, my! Try saying that in ominous, grave voice on TV.

Quite unimaginative. Heh, Taufan Nangka LOL.

I know what I'd call my typhoons if I were involved in their naming. Aragorn, Boromir, Eomer, Frodo etc :DD

Not with your throat, girl. How is it now, btw?

I felt the tremors from the earthquake in Sumatra today. I didn't know it was the earthquake then and I didn't actually feel it but the spoon inside my empty mug started shaking for about 5 secs and it occured twice. You saw 'Jurasssic Park'? Just like that shaking glass of water when the dinosaur was approaching. First time I experience a tremor.
