layne67I saw 'Eragon' last week. And my first impression was it was way, way too short. Not short in the way LOTR's three hours simply flew but short as in well, short! At first I thought they were combining the 2nd story into the 1st one because when the story was coming to its end, I glanced at my watch and rather to my surprise not even an hour and a half had passed and I was like, that's it? So yeah, it was a bit like an incomplete meal for me.
The first three-quarter of the story was good. I really, really love the actor who played Eragon ( pronounced in exactly the same way as 'Aragorn' ). Hard to believe that he has never acted before. And I hope his cousin Roran will make a re-appearance in the sequel. The two of them tumbling about in the bedroom was too good to be true!
Jeremy Irons lives up to expectation, and more. And I think he's even better than Malkovich, who's also good but Irons is simply awesome as Brom. And there's great chemistry between him and Eragon too. No, nothing slashy there. That particular slot is reserved for Eragon/Roran *g*
Saphira the dragon looks very real and life-like. Nothing fake or CGI-looking about her. But I wish Paolini had written the dragon as a male. And having Rachel Weisz's sweet voice coming out of that otherwise fierce-looking dragon just doesn't seem right. Maybe if they have, say, Angelina Jolie or somebody with a 'stronger' voice or make it a male dragon altogether ...
The actor who played Durza is a pain in the neck. I cringed each time he came on-screen. He's supposed to be this very cruel Shade, a sorcerer who dabbled in black magic and instead of frightening he simply looks -- comedic. Like Saruman with very bad make-up on. Especially towards the end. Omg that make-up. Made me think of a character out of a Chinese opera. Yikes.
The last quarter of the movie was nothing to shout about. Things went downhill for me after they reached the Verdan's hiding place. It seems like they were in a rush to finish the movie and some parts look like they were bad, very bad remakes of scenes from the LOTR and in some parts, Star Wars. The battle scene was disappointing except for the bit when Saphira breathes fire. Now that's awesome but that's about it. Murtagh hardly makes an impact, appearing only in a few scenes he might as well not be there at all.
In summary, double thumbs up to Eragon played by Edward Speelers, Jeremy Irons who played Brom and Saphira the dragon ( not the voice, though ). Eragon riding Saphira was great, so much better than Potter on his broomstick and Malkovich was convincing as the evil Galbotrix. Like I said, the first three-quarter of the movie was mostly good. It's just the last part that I don't quite like.
If you haven't watch it yet but are planning to, look out for these scenes :
1. Sam and Frodo setting out from The Shire.
2. Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli going after the Orcs to save Merry and Pippin.
3. The Orcs and the Uruk-Hais.
4. Saruman and his Orcs and Uruk-Hais. The scene where he was at the top of Orthanc and he was sending his army off to attack the Rohans.
5. Aragorn and his army waiting for the attack.
6. The ending of TTT when Gandalf and the rest were looking towards Mordor in the distance.
And have I said that I want Roran to come back?
