Het pairings
Mar. 2nd, 2007 01:33 amJust wondering, does any of you read fanfics with het pairings? What het pairings have you read, or would read?
My het OTPs are Aragorn/Arwen and Mulder/Scully. I'm not too sure about this, but is it wrong to use the "/" in het pairings? I've read somewhere that the slash character "/" is what originally denotes the term "slash" in same-sex pairings written in fanfics. Anyone knows the history of the term "slash'?
Anyway, back to my het pairings.
Aragorn/Arwen. When I first read 'The Lord of the Rings', I totally fall for the dark, handsome Ranger. So much so that I had to stop reading the book for a while when Eowyn fall in love with him, I so did not want him to reciprocate in kind! Even after Eowyn met Faramir, I was still unsure that Aragorn would not declare his love for her. Not that I have anything against Eowyn. I think she was very brave and tragic and all that, and that moment when movie!Eowyn said "I am no man" before she killed the Witch King was one of my favourite, heart-stopping moments in the movie, but I was so in love with Aragorn that I didn't want him to be with any other woman. ( The slashy vibes that I got then were from Frodo/Sam and Merry/Pippin and maybe a little bit from Elladan/Elrohir and Faramir/Boromir, and as much as I'm squicked by this pairing - Legolas/Gimli ).
So, at the end of RotK when Aragorn was waiting for Arwen to join him at Minas Tirith ( at this point of the book I had to re-read 'The Council of Elrond' because I couldn't for the life of me remember who Arwen was ), I was so relieved to know that Aragorn would now never ask Eowyn to marry him that I actually didn't mind Arwen being the Queen instead. And I suppose her being an elf ( or half-elven ), and not an ordinary human, helped.
But I wasn't quite into Arwen yet then. I mean, there was hardly anything about her in the book proper. It was when I read the Appendix that I truly appreciate the magnitude of the love that Aragorn had for her, and Arwen for him.
Excerpt from ROTK : Appendix A(v) - Here follows a part of the tale of Aragorn and Arwen.
And suddenly even as he sang he saw a maiden walking on a greensward among the white stems of the birches; and he had halted amazed, thinking that he had strayed into a dream ... And behold! there Luthien walked before his eyes in Rivendell, clad in a mantle of silver and blue, fair as the twilight in Elven-home; her dark hair strayed in a sudden wind, and her brows were bound with gems like stars ... Then Aragorn was abashed, for he saw the elven-light in her eyes and the wisdom of many days; yet from that hour he loved Arwen Undomiel daughter of Elrond.
... and as he came walking towards her under the trees of Caras Galadhon laden with flowers of gold, her choice was made and her doom apppointed.
And who said that Tolkien didn't write any romance in The LotR?
*meltsmeltsmelts*
I was greatly disappointed when the EE DVD came out and there was no scene of young Aragorn courting Arwen. But maybe it was for the better. After all that scene where Anakin was frolicking around with Amidala in the grass turned out to be rather ridiculous, IMO.
As for Mulder/Scully. Omg I love these two together right from the very first episode of 'The X-Files'. The sexual tension between the two of them, which was never really said clearly, only implied, and which I think worked better when left to our imaginings, at least in the first few seasons that is, oh boy, I squeed like anything if they as much as looked at each other for longer than a few seconds!
Which is why I could never venture into 'The X-Files' fandom even though apparently there were quite a number of excellent fics over there. Mulder/Krycheck? Never. Mulder and Scully belonged to each other!
And when David Duchovny married that woman I was heartbroken for weeks. Still couldn't stand Tea Leoni until now :/
So, yeah, these two are my het OTPs. What about you?

But, but, does that mean Aragorn didn't fall in love with Frodo either?

Date: 2007-03-01 07:18 pm (UTC)Then again, het fanfic might feature erotica, which used to not be in mainstream literature.
Slash came from the "/" as far as I know, for Kirk/Spock way back when, I believe. But surely it's okay to write Mulder/Scully. When I first found some fanfic and read the term "slash" I was afraid it was something violent! Like S/M. *shudders delicately*
Gimme Orlijah forever!

Date: 2007-03-02 12:04 am (UTC)Yeah, I know what you mean :)
And it was quite some time before I dared to email my first feedback to a slash author whose fic I really, really loved. And when she replied I was almost afraid to open it!
Gimme Orlijah forever!
Amen ...

Date: 2007-03-01 08:25 pm (UTC)I just don't seem to have much interest in it anymore, not even Arwen/Aragorn.

Date: 2007-03-01 08:54 pm (UTC)I've just read some het fics, obviously involving Frodo, mostly with Pearl Took, sometimes with Rosie Cotton (alone or together with Sam), and other times with an original female character.
But my OTP is and remains Frodo / Sam.

Date: 2007-03-02 12:19 am (UTC)LOL that must have been a pretty bad het fic!!!
I love reading a good het romance, a love story, esp in novels, but you're right, sex between two guys are more exciting and arousing!
My own pet theory is that men are beautiful so it's natural that they would find other men beautiful too!

Date: 2007-03-02 06:01 am (UTC)Oh, that's the same with each het romance. Even when I read Anne Rice. *yawns*
I think men and women are like apples and pears. It seems not go together somehow because the differences between them are to big. So it's what Mother Nature invented to breed the different kinds of living creatures nothing more. Fun is to find somewhere else. ;D LOL!

Date: 2007-03-02 02:17 am (UTC)I just find the thought of two hot guys going at each other so much more appealing. I mean, it's Orli and Elijah! At once! The thought of them together was so hot that I was actually able to write something to completion, with sex! (I'd tried to write for myself before, original fic, and could never finish anything. It just never rang true to me before slash and the all inspiring Orlijah). :D

Date: 2007-03-02 03:06 am (UTC)I should have mentioned in my post, the het pairings that I would read are not the NC17 ones. Nowadays I only enjoy the m/m ones, the het ones didn't do anything for me. Even when they're really erotic and written by published authors. Sometimes I'd even imagine the girl as Elijah to get some enjoyment. It's the *love stories* of the m/f that I enjoy, the romance, the courting, but the sex? Give me Orlijah, anytime, anywhere, anyhow :DD

Date: 2007-03-02 07:11 am (UTC)Or perhaps it was intentional. You see, I don't read het and I don't even talk about it. If I want to read het, I can simply buy Harlequin. :P But slash, not too many books about it out there.
