Dean and Jess shared the same birthday. I've always wondered how Sam would remember his brother while celebrating with Jess, given that they didn't really talk to each other during those years Sam was in college. Did he just fleetingly think of Dean? Or did he go into these major angsty funks that he's prone to?

[livejournal.com profile] unhobbityhobbit wrote this lovely birthday fic Birthday Phone Call in which Sam did call Dean to wish him Happy Birthday with Jess listening in to the phone conversation. It's not angsty, but I couldn't help tearing a little bit because those two apart is just not -- right.

Speaking of Sam's four years in college, canon-wise, was it mentioned anywhere in the series, whether they kept in touch with each other?

Anybody has any good recs on this? Angst would be good :)

The other thing that I've always wondered was whether anyone ever bothered/noticed when young Sam and Dean were left alone when their father went hunting. I mean, for God's sake, Dean was only nine when he had to look after his young brother in 'Something Wicked'. Dean saying that he was climbing the walls after three days with Sam was an understatement. In RL, wouldn't someone have noticed and reported it to the Social Services or something?

Again, any recs?

And yeah, I'm a sucker for angst.

You've always had great ideas, this time how they feel when Dean has his birthday. Btw, in Something Wicked papa Winchester did mention that the kids should go to Pastor Jim if he wasn't back.

Yeah, Pastor Jim. But how are the kids going to get to him? Heh, my eldest is 13 and I dare not leave him alone at the house overnight! But then, I don't have a demon to hunt, and John had no choice I guess. But still, when I first saw 'Something Wicked' I was like, WHAT? He's going to leave the two kids there alone?

And sweetie, I only have the *ideas* but not the words. For a good, angsty story ;)

In the pilot Dean says "It's been almost two years and I've never called or bothered you for anything." (I'm just paraphrasing) So it's been said that he came into contact with Dean somewhere during his sophomore year in college

But then again Kripke said during the 2006 Paley Festival that they made an error about Sam's college situation (he was supposed to be starting his junior year, therefore technically he has only been at Stanford for two years.)If this is true then Dean hasn't spoken to Sam since the time before Sam left for college.

lol hope that clarified [:

I'm not familiar with the college terms. Sophomore is the 3rd yr and junior yr is the 2nd? Sam was 22 during the pilot episode ( if I'm not mistaken ) so he started college at the age of 20 and not 18?

For them not to keep in touch for two yrs is more reasonable. I mean, they're close and the fight was between Sam and John so it didn't make sense for them to not talk to each other for four long yrs.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if Kripke has a blog somewhere where we can ask him questions and such?*g*

sophmore is 2 years and junior is three years, lol. I think you have it backwards...

haha right? 'cept I think we'd all end up filling his blog with declarations of love/hate and confuse him with plots to have his babies *pets and cuddles kripke*

or you know, at least I would [:

The years thing yeah Kripke did 'fess up that it was just a mistake. As for the two of them not talking, sometimes when you're really close and all of a sudden your sibling doesn't take your side and doesn't help you out when arguing with a parent you feel kind of betrayed. There are loads of speculatable (that's not word, I know) reasons why they didn't talk for as long as they did.

Leaving kids alone at home alone... I'm not saying this to say my folks were bad folks but my folks started leaving us home alone when I was 5 and my bro was 2. We somehow survived. But if you pay attention to John's instructions about not going outside and keeping the blinds shut, it's so that no one outside realizes there are only 2 kids there. Cuz if you've just got kids going in and out of an apt or if you look in the window and see no adults, that's when people start to get nosey. No one notices when no one is going in and out of an apt, they only notice when people ARE moving around.

That's how people die in their homes, alone, and no one realizes it until a week later.

Depressing, isn't it?

So it was just two yrs and not four?

Yeah, there're plenty of speculations in the fics that I've read - Dean feeling betrayed, Sam feeling betrayed etc. But they did talk on the phone after Sam left Dean in 'Scarecrow'. I wonder who called who there?

It is depressing, and Dean certainly had to grow up fast there.
