LOL

John Winchester made the list of "Peculiar Papas" in an article in our local newspaper today. Heh, the minute I saw the headline I immediately scanned it down, looking for Papa Winchester and there he was. And he got the longest write-up, too!

The journalist must have been a fangirl.

John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan of Supernatural) is an intense man and as a father, he is pretty unconventional. Ever since his wife was taken in a most horrific manner by a yellow-eyed demon, John has prioritised hunting down demons and evil beings. Any time that he spends with his two sons is used to educate them on all things supernatural.

Dean (Jensen Ackles) follows in his father’s footsteps while Sam (Jared Padalecki) decides to reject his father’s teachings, causing discord in the family.

In one flashback episode, John leaves Dean with Sam in a motel while he hunts a demon that takes the life-force from children to perpetuate its unnatural life. However, Dean, who could not have been more than 12 years old, was forced to defend his brother against this demon. Later, he even assured his father that everything would be all right when the latter had a meltdown. A heavy burden, indeed, for a young boy to bear, but Dean did it anyway and never complained.

However, in Season Two, we discover that John burdened Dean even more with his last request, adding even more pressure.

Sure, it would be easy to dismiss John as a bad father since he didn’t ensure his sons’ safety – instead of reassuring them that there weren’t monsters under the bed like the conventional dad would have, he actually exposed them to these things at a very young age.

Yet because John taught the boys so well, they are able to continue his work of making the world a safer place. While John may have initially been motivated by revenge, he figured out pretty fast that his quest had to be more honourable and that is his legacy to his sons. So touching, really.

The other "peculiar" dads featured are House Sr, Dr. Sheppard Sr, Phillip Bauer, Homer Simpson, Tony Soprano, Keith Mars and Bennet.

Hee, I think Simpson takes the prize for being the most peculiar Dad :DD

Any other TV Dads that you think should have been in the list?

But young Sam played soccer, didn't he? And he was always mad at John because they never stayed at one place long enough for him to join a team. Dian could write something on that, American kids and soccer and she could somehow write in Sam and Dean there.

I know, I know, I'm thinking wildly here :D
