This may have been discussed before but it only has just occured to me. Really would love to know your opinions.

Mary obviously recognized the YED when she saw him in Sam's nursery. What if the YED had come before, four years before to be exact, and he tried to get baby!Dean, but was unable to. Because Castiel ( or maybe another angel ) was there, to protect Dean. And hence Mary's "Angels were always watching over you."

She meant that literally.

But I really like that idea that Mary knew Dean had a guardian angel. Oooohhh, maybe Mary was one of those special people who could see Castiel's true form, so he naturally expected Dean to be able to as well. And maybe she could see YED's true form? Because if she knew him before that night, would he have been wearing the same meatsuit, one that looked a bit like John, at least in the dark? Or would she recognize his true face no matter who he was wearing at the time?

And will Sam be able to see Castiel's true visage? I think he will, which will freak Dean out. And lots of angst will ensue, and fanfic! Bring on the Sam/Castiel, or Sam/Dean/Castiel fics!

I agree, or at least talk to an angel directly, because otherwise why would Castiel said what he said to Dean?

I don't think it mattered to the YED that Mary could recognize him, and I think he was wearing the same meatsuit as he did before. Because I think if Mary could see his true form, her reaction would be more than her "You!". Demons are not exactly pretty ...

And I think he meant to kill Mary, which brings me to the next question. Why kill Jess? I got it that Mary had to go, mother's love and all that ( shades of Harry Potter there maybe? ), and Mary may have been special in some ways, but why Jess?

About Jess, I think YED said in some episode, that he needed Sam to be...what was it? Ready? The idea was that it was a way of pushing Sam to become a hunter, to hone his skills. If Sam and Jess had gotten married and settled down in a McMansion with the requisite number of kids and dogs, Sam wouldn't be very well-prepared to lead the demon army, would he? This way, he's good and mad to begin with, and revenge is probably a good first step down that slippery slope of evil that seems good.

And I've always thought, part of it was an extreme form of birth control. Maybe there was some reason YED didn't want Sam to sire any kids, at least, not with this ordinary human chick. But mainly, she had to die because she was important to Sam, and stood in the way of him toughening up enough to lead a demonic army. Sam was ready to leave off searching for his father, in order to get back to Jess and his normal-ish life, so he needed something to really shake him up.

I like it. I like that they are finally giving Dean significance in the mythos of the show, anyway, and I think it would be veeeery interesting if your hypothesis were correct.

But it scares me too, because it does look like they're going to go the brother vs brother way, and I'm going to HATE it if they did that. I'm just hoping that Kripke would be more original than that!

That reminds me of the story 'First Born', written by justforspite. Have you read that? Your sis rec'd it to me. But Dean himself was an angel in that story, not only someone protected by one. And if I remember correctly, angel!Dean is feared by all, even by the other angels themselves. The only thing is, Dean didn't know he's an angel!

I'm convinced this is the case. The only thing I hadn't considered was the fact that Castiel might have actually been there the night the YED came for Dean.

I just re-watched What is and What Should Never Be again a few days ago, and there's that part where Dean rushes to the house and asks Mary what she used to tell him before she tucked him in, and there's this pause, and then she smiles and says "I told you that angels were watching over you."
And it seemed really important when I was watching but I couldn't figure out how, and it was niggling at me, yes I just said niggling.

I'm just so glad that I haven't been spoiled for anything yet, well, except for that guest star in ep.4, and I supposed that's when they're going to give us the backsktory of the Winchesters.

And if my theory's right, it's so good to know that Dean's a special child right from the beginning, because that man is beautiful inside and out, despite his apparent superficialness.
