Ouch.

Okay, I just had a conversation with my sister in law about this... Seriously, how smelly is a durian? I can't believe that something that smells bad can taste good. Does it really?

It's an acquired thing, this liking for durians, and kinda subjective I guess. I like it so I don't mind the smell. It is overpowering though, and I know that they're not allowed in hotels and airplanes.

For those who hates durians, well, some have been known to pass out from it, no kidding! And I've seen it described as smelling like a err, woman's private parts and bad cheese.

The durians are not helping any! I don't want to hurt her feelings so I have to eat them. Not that I don't like them, but durians are so, what should I say, heaty. It'll make the sore throat worse.

*drinks lots of water*

OMG! That's amazing! I was watching Bizarre Foods with Andrew Zimmern on the Travel Channel and he couldn't eat it. I mean, last night, I watched the guy pull off the wings from moths and chew on their bodies but he couldn't bring himself to eat durian so I was really curious.

I'm sorry. I got distracted for a moment. Hope you feel better soon, hun.

I wish I could send some to you! You don't have them in Hawaii? There're durian flavoured ice creams and candies and jellies here. I'll see if I could find some and send them to you, though not the ice cream or the fruit itself obviously.

Seriously? That would be so awesome!

I'd never heard of it before last Thursday. We were having lunch and randomly talking about bizarre foods and got on the subject of Jackfruit. I'd never heard of it before but my aunt said she thinks her neighbor has a tree. She thought it was Jackfruit but it smells really bad.

I'm just amazed you mentioned something that I randomly talked about a few days ago (that I'd never even heard of before).

I don't know what those are but if they hurt that much just tell her your throat is killing you and you don't feel up to eating anymore. I'm sure she would hate to know you're dying to keep from hurting her feelings you nut.

Here's how the taste of durian as described by a durian lover ( who happened to be a westener ) - just found it on the net.

"a rich custard highly flavored with almonds . . . but there are occasional wafts of flavour that call to mind cream cheese, onion-sauce, sherry wine and other incongruous dishes. Then there is a rich glutinous smoothness in the pulp which nothing else possesses, but which adds to its delicacy. It is neither acid, nor sweet, nor juicy; yet it wants none of these qualities, for it is in itself perfect. It produces no nausea or other bad effect, and the more you eat of it the less you feel inclined to stop.

Jackfruit smells very nice actually, not at all like a durian!

Here's (http://surfood.com/surfood_eshop/images/Jackfruit%20at%20tree_Nangka.jpg) a pic. Does it look anything like your aunt's neighbour's tree?

That thing is ugly. I hope it tastes better than it looks.

It's probably the acidic content that's killing you since most fruit is high in acid.

I'm alright Jas. I'm having a mango right now, and it's such a lovely, soothing contrast to durians. Yummm ...

Durian is not good for sore throat?

Btw, I tried this herbal cough medicine from Singapore called Harvest and it's so good! Perhaps you can find it in your place.

*soothes you*

It causes sore throat, among other things! You're okay when you eat durians, Shinta? No stomach discomfort, headache or throat irritation?

No, no Harvest here, unfortunately. Just relying on good ol' Strepsils!

Lucky you! I love durians but I can't eat much of it. Durians and me don't really get along, it doesn't like me the way I like it it. Talk about UST ... *mourns*

Unresolved sexual tension. I know, that dratted durian has driven me loopy.

Bwhahahahahahaha

So Jared = durian and Jensen = you, or the other way around?

Oy! Apalah you ni, one-tracked mind betul! Not everything has to do with the boys.

*huffs*

But. Do you think they'd like durians?

That's what happens when you reply comments while writing the next chapter. :D

But that's really not true. Everything has to do with the boys.

^__^

And I think it's easy to ask Jared to try it. He likes eating, doesn't he?

Date: 2009-05-14 08:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
Yeah, I think Jared would try it, and probably even like it. As for Jensen, I think he'd hate even the smell, but he'd try it anyway, just to be polite, keeping his game face on :))
