- American Idol Top 13. My favourite performance was Scotty's. My, I could, and I did, listen to him singing that song over and over and over again.

- 83rd Academy Award. I like James Franco but I thought there was something a little off with him hosting the show with Anne Hathaway, who was fabulous btw. I didn't feel any chemistry between them and he was leaning away from her most of the time and I don't think he even looked at her, not even once!

- [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian wrote an interesting write-up here on what distinguishes RPF AUs and original fictions and 'Should more RPF "cross the line" and be turned into publishable original fiction?' My take on the latter is, for RPFs to get more readership, it should but not without considerable loss to the magic that makes RPFs special ie the characters themselves be it Jared/Jensen, Sean/Elijah etc etc. On the other hand, not a lot of readers would take on RPFs that are outside their fandom which I think is a great pity and I'm not only talking about other people because I'm sure that I'm missing out a LOT by not being able to read, say, the bandom RPFs.

Have a great weekend, dear flist. Mine begins tonight so see you some time next week and hopefully the LJ-notifications will have been sorted out by then. Ta.

ps Those on tsunami watch, stay safe. My thoughts are with you.

Shhh, i won't admit that i'm watching AI but i'm with you, Scotty was great. I also liked James too. What can i say i'm a rock girl.

I'm actually not much of a James fan, I thought he was rather Lambert-ish. Not that I don't like Lambert, I do, but seeing him perform, it was like, been-there-done-that kind of thing. But I enjoyed his last performance, very much. And if he kept that up, I might just be turned into a fan!

I'm an Adam fan :) So for me it was good :) But i did mean his last performance so there we agree. I hope he'll stay, i need a rocker on this show. they often tend to slip into blues/rmb category and i don't like that kind of music.

What was wrong with Franco??? I'm a fan and I was so looking forward to him co-hosting the show!

Hee, sorry to say that but i think he was high (too much dope i think). He looked indifferent while Anne was too enthusiastic and with her being there all that vivd he looked like a piece of wood :) In a fanny way i must say. I don't know much about him but maybe he was too nervous to host this thing and overdose himself planning to stay calm but it was too much.

It was an enjoyable weekend. Hubby and the kids played cricket for hubby's company team, playing against a cricket club in Penang. It was a friendly match, we lost but it was fun all the same.

The wreckage left by the tsunami was horrifying. Penang Island was out of the way but I couldn't help looking over the horizon for tell-tale larger than normal waves ( can't help remembering that monster 2004 tsunami where the waves, seen from a distance, were thought to be schools of dolphins rushing towards the shore at breakneck speed by some onlookers ) but the sea remained calm with hardly any wave seen.

No, we weren't but I couldn't help but felt a bit nervous all the same since the place where we went was hit, albeit in a minor scale, in the 2004 tsunami!

I thought Anne Hathaway did a great job, and could have hosted the show herself.

I just woke up to the news of that tsunami. Good heavens! :O

Anne Hathaway was awesome. I thought she was beautiful and funny and bright and yep, she could have hosted the show all on her own!

Thank goodness the tsunami damage wasn't widespread as it was in the 2004 one. The devastation in Japan was bad enough as it is, and I do hope there won't be any nuclear aftermath on top of everything else.

I really like Scotty... I think even if he got voted off next week he'd probably go straight to Nashville and have his choice of record execs clamoring at his feet. Those kind of pure country voices come along about once a generation. (And I was very surprised at Haley's take on "Blue"... talk about channeling Patsy Cline!) It's interesting how country music has sort of taken more of a front row seat this year. As a fan of that genre, that gives me a happy. :)

And wow, just checked the news this morning after reading your post and saw the headline about the earthquake & tsunami... my prayers are with all those folks affected.

Hubby and I were saying, with that voice of his, Scotty really didn't need to do anything else, just get on stage and sing. Unfortunately, that was not the case for Lauren. She has a fabulous voice as well but unlike Scotty, she needs to perform. I could hear it in my head, Simon Cowell saying that was a lazy peformance by her.

And yes, country music seems to be at the fore-front this season. Good thing Simon is no longer around, eh? :DD

You're right, it really wasn't a good performance from her, and while she's really good, she doesn't quite have the stop-'em-in-their-tracks quality voice to get by with covering a song she doesn't really believe in, or with putting on a karaoke-level exhibition. I don't know how many times a contestant will shrug off criticism with a "But I was having a good time"... argh! I hate it when contestants respond to constructive criticism that way. Nothing against them having fun, of course, but it seems to me when a singer says that on idol, it's a hint that they're not really understanding just what it means to entertain--it's not about us watching them having a good time on stage, but about them making sure *we're* having a good time as an audience. That, and the stank-eye she gave the judges kinda tells me that Lauren isn't used to hearing anything but, "Oh, you're brilliant and wonderful". She did at least admit that it wasn't a good performance on results night, although she sort of swung too far the other direction and that almost came across as a bid for sympathy. I just dunno what to think of her, but hopefully she'll mature a little and learn and improve from here on out.

Oh well, she *is* sixteen.

I agree with you about that "But I was having a good time" thing. Really, really immature. It's like, the standard answer or something to the criticisms from the judges lol.

As it's been suggested to me numerous times to turn Woodjin into original fic, I've thought about this topic a lot. I couldn't imagine doing it. My RPS is so driven by my OTP that I really have no interest in rewriting my RPS stories, even if it meant getting them published. It would feel sort of like a betrayal, if that makes sense.

That makes perfect sense. A couple of writers in the SPN fandom had been talking on re-writing their RPF AUs into original fictions and while I'm happy for them, I can't help but feel, like I said above, that the magic that made the stories special to the fandom would be lost. Woodjin for instance, even if you didn't change anything else about the story, the story won't quite be the same if it's not Sean and Elijah!

I wrote something about this on my DW because I'm beta-ing an original work that used to be a J2AU. I agree with a lot of this... There's magic in fanfic because the characters are infused with so much of that which makes them stand out in the first place. To create original fiction, a writer really has to work hard to capture that essence of what makes characters unique and memorable. It takes a skilled hand, I think.

Thanks for the link!

But unfortunately, that particular brand of magic only applies to the readers from the relevant fandoms. Someone once rec'd me a fic from a fandom I'm not into, but while I admit that the writing is great, I just couldn't get into it!

That's absolutely true... I totally agree. I think there's a certain amount of shorthand fanfic writers get away with because they take for granted we "know" the characters they're writing about. I even read something about this on the anon-meme. Some anons were talking about how they hate when writers take so much time describing Jensen's eyes because we know what Jensen's eyes look like. Actually, I think very few RPF writers really take the time to describe Jensen's eyes for that reason. So when we're reading stuff in bandom, it's like we get only a general idea of what these guys look like or what their personal characteristics are so it's less enjoyable no matter how good the story is. I really think that's the main failing. Besides, we're not personally invested in these characters so it's not as meaningful.

Original fiction is supposed to create the world the characters inhabit so if it's done right, it doesn't matter if their names are Jared, Jensen, Harry, Hermoine, or anybody else.
