Zeke slams into Casey on the football field and takes possession. The impact knocks the smaller boy flying and he hits the ground with an awkward thud. Zeke passes the ball to Stan, who, in spite of formidable opposition, catches it and runs. Zeke watches satisfied as his team-mate takes the ball across the line just as the ref blows the final whistle. That's the point at which he, Zeke, turns to face and squat down beside Casey, who appears to have gone into fully-fledged hibernation mode.

Zeke sighs and rolls his eyes. "Hey." It comes out a little more brusquely than he intended, but what the fuck. When there's no response, he shakes Casey by the shoulder. "Game's over. Time to stop acting so fucking dramatic."

Still no response. Annoyed, Zeke shakes Casey again, this time grabbing him by both shoulders and shouting at the same time, “CASEY! GET UP! DON’T FUCK WITH ME!”

Nothing. That’s when Zeke starts to panic. He hardly notices the small crowd that has begun to gather around Casey and him.

Zeke bends down and puts his left cheek near Casey’s nose and mouth. He can feel Casey’s warm breath on his face and he can see Casey’s chest moves up and down in synchrony with his breathing. Zeke puts his hand on one side of Casey’s neck, feeling for the pulse. It is there, strong and regular under Zeke’s probing fingers. Zeke is relieved, just a little though because Casey is still completely out. But at least Zeke does not have to do a CPR. Zeke has never done a CPR before and he has only the vaguest idea on how to do one. Guh, he will probably break Casey’s ribs if he starts thumping on Casey’s thin chest. But he does know that you do not do a CPR on someone who is breathing regularly and whose pulse is good. Zeke quickly checks Casey for any sign of external injuries. There is none that he can see. Does not mean that Casey is not bleeding internally though.

“Do we need to call the medics?” Stan sounds anxious. Zeke can hear Coach Willis in the background, asking the crowd to move off.

“Maybe,” Zeke answers distractedly. He thinks he sees Casey’s face twitches slightly or is it just his imagination? No, there it is again and this time Casey’s eyes flutter open and Zeke can faintly hear Casey saying his name, “Zeke?”

“Casey.” Zeke nearly cries with relief. He quickly gathers Casey in his arms and carries him towards the school, Stan and Coach Willis following close behind.

“Zeke put me down right now. I’m alright. I can walk.” Casey is struggling weakly to get down.

Zeke puts Casey down reluctantly. He still keeps his arms around Casey though, quite oblivious to the coach and Stan standing nearby.

“You were out Casey. I’ve never been so scared in my whole life. What happened?”

“Hypoglycaemia I guess. I skipped breakfast this morning and then you knocked me down.”

Zeke closes his eyes and hugs Casey close to him.

“Zeke,” Casey whispers urgently. “There are people here.”

Zeke grins. To hell with Coach Willis, Stan or whoever else that might be watching. He looks down, tips Casey’s face upward and kisses him.

Hard.

With tongue.

And Casey kisses him back.

Equally hard.

Right there.

In front of everybody.

If they want to be out, they might as well do it in style.
