Jul. 6th, 2010 05:30 pmSleep, Pale Sister by Joanne Harris is a lovely read. Four not-so-nice characters and yet I enjoyed the story so much. There's Effie, weak, vapid, Effie. She became what she was through no fault of her own. Henry, the borderline pedophile with his mother-issues, Mose the rogue, and not a likeable rogue either. And Fanny with her obsession with her dead daughter. And of course, the elusive Marta - a ghost? A figment of Effie's imagination? Oh boy, a modern-day psychiatrist would have a field day with all four of them, especially Effie. I could totally see her being diagnosed as a schizophrenic with multiple personality disorder.
A haunting story with Joanna Harris's trademark style of atmospheric writing.
As for Restraint latest update, the bells that rung tore my heart into a zillion pieces. I thought I couldn't read it at first, but I did of course and I cried and I cried ...
Next book : The First Casualty by Ben Elton. His books have always been about comedic satires, books that literally made me laugh till I cried, but I can't imagine this book, set during WWI being one of those. It looks pretty serious, a first from Elton for me!
Next Big-Bang : Hmmm, I can't decide between this, this or this.
