Sleep, Pale Sister by Joanne Harris is a lovely read. Four not-so-nice characters and yet I enjoyed the story so much. There's Effie, weak, vapid, Effie. She became what she was through no fault of her own. Henry, the borderline pedophile with his mother-issues, Mose the rogue, and not a likeable rogue either. And Fanny with her obsession with her dead daughter. And of course, the elusive Marta - a ghost? A figment of Effie's imagination? Oh boy, a modern-day psychiatrist would have a field day with all four of them, especially Effie. I could totally see her being diagnosed as a schizophrenic with multiple personality disorder.

A haunting story with Joanna Harris's trademark style of atmospheric writing.

As for Restraint latest update, the bells that rung tore my heart into a zillion pieces. I thought I couldn't read it at first, but I did of course and I cried and I cried ...

Next book : The First Casualty by Ben Elton. His books have always been about comedic satires, books that literally made me laugh till I cried, but I can't imagine this book, set during WWI being one of those. It looks pretty serious, a first from Elton for me!

Next Big-Bang : Hmmm, I can't decide between this, this or this.

I'm about to take my first step on this long journey, Ten Thousand Miles, last year's Big Bang by [livejournal.com profile] mimblexwimble.

I've put it off long enough. Each time I clicked on that fic I backed off when I reached this line - It’s 3:19 AM and the last time Dean ever sees Sam.

It's not that I don't do sad. Some of my favourite fics ever are actually death fics that made me bawl like a baby - When It's Over by [livejournal.com profile] wynter_rebel, We Were Twenty by [livejournal.com profile] elohvee, White Ladder by [livejournal.com profile] tru_faith_lost, to name a few.

But that line up there is just so depressing, even more so than [livejournal.com profile] elohvee's It's sunny the day he buries his brother.

Maybe because that line implies that Dean will never ever find out what happens to his brother? I don't know, but no matter how many glowing recs that fic received, I had never managed to get past that line.

But today, I'm determined to read that story. And if the fic is as good as all the recs said, then I'll probably going to be this sobbing mess by the end of it.

ETA : Yes, I am a sobbing wreck now. Flawless writing, 10/10, but the jury's still out on the story per se because I'm an absolute mess now. One thing's for sure though, I will not forget this story for a long, long time.

Do you read when you eat? Or vice versa? I do it. Most of the time anyway. I used to do it all the time when I was younger, reached for a book at meal times and my mother would frown and say it wasn't polite to do that when you were in other people's company.

Somehow it enhances the stories that I'm reading, and the food would taste better too. And I associate some food with certain books/stories, like lychees with Enid Blyton's Amelia Jane series, and fish curry with The Lord of the Rings. Some of my most beloved books have lots of unrecognizable stains on them!

I can't eat when I read porn though. Or the darker horror stories, like some of the Stephen King's books. For those I need my full concentration lol.

But most of the time, I love eating while reading. Not good for the keyboard but I have a hand towel ready!
