Oh my. That was so, so good it felt like a finale to me. And I can't remember when was the last time I cried watching SPN. Maybe during that episode when the brothers burnt their father's body at the pyre. Or that time when John appeared as a flickering spirit in All Hell Break Loose 2, nodding his approval at Dean. This time I bawled when Ellen and Jo sat together, waiting for their deaths. It's a pity that we won't be seeing them anymore, especially Ellen, but if I were her, I would have done exactly the same as what she did.

[livejournal.com profile] i_o_r_h_a_e_l, now I feel silly about my reluctance to watch this episode!

And now, what? Five, six more weeks before the next episode? Aargh!!

This was definitely the most powerful episode they've had for at least three weeks. All the silly episodes that came before made this episode stand out even more for the depth and emotional impact it carried.

Samantha Ferris as Ellen was so good, wasn't she? I really felt for her, Jo being her child and all. And when Jo said that that was the last chance for her mother to treat her like an adult ... *sniffles*

And I love the actor who played Lucifer, and Crowley was in an episode of Leverage, wasn't he?

I believe he was in an episode of Leverage.

Wasn't this a sad ep, I always liked Ellen and Jo and was glad when they returned this season - but how could they have killed them off :(

As a mum I know exactly where I'd have been!

But what a way to go for Ellen and Jo. In burning glory, literally. Now we just have to wait for John to make his grand comeback! ( not a spoiler, just my wishful thinking )

I bawled for Ellen like you wouldn't believe. Maybe it's because I'm a mother myself, she resonated with me like no other characters did here.

p.s. I need to get off my lazy a$$ and write something about what I think of the episode soon... :(

I would have lost all respect for Ellen if she were to leave Jo there alone. Though to be honest, I was a bit torn there. On one hand, I didn't want Ellen to leave her daughter but on the other, I really didn't want her to die. But if that was real life and it was me instead of Ellen, I would have stayed there, no question asked.

Yes, I missed your episode reviews! And oh, btw, I'd love to know what's your opinion on this (http://layne67.livejournal.com/512642.html).

Yeah, I think that mothers everywhere cried out for Ellen and Jo. I get choked up even thinking about it now. Very powerful moment!

That was a heart-seizing moment, wasn't it? And Alona Tal was so good, so much better than she was in 'No Exit'. That girl has indeed grown up.

Ben Edlund was awesome, wasn't he? The first thing that I always do with a new ep is to check who the director is and I cheered when I saw it was Edlund.

Great acting all the way around. It was also a very chilling episode. All those reapers standing around made a profound impact visually. There were a lot of visually captivating moments. What a great creative team and crew they have!

On a smaller note, I really liked the rainy outside shoots. Reminds me of good old wet, dark, dreary seasons 1 & 2. :-)

I knew Ellen would make that choice. Without Jo, she's got nothing left. Her husband died, the Roadhouse burned. She was fond of the boys, sure, but never as close like family as Bobby is. Just nothing left. Reminded me a little too much of me.

Oh yes, definitely great acting all around. Mark Pellegrino gave me the chills, he was so awesome as Lucifer. And now I really want to see him as Jacob in Lost. The reapers made me think of the movie, I think it was called The City Of Angels, the one where Nick Cage ( I think ) was an angel who came down to earth or something, and there was a scene where the angels were just standing looking up at the sky, just like the reapers in 5.10. But I wonder why there wasn't any Tessa-like reaper. I guess Tessa was custom-made for Dean?

Date: 2009-11-24 02:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chloe-amethyst.livejournal.com
I don't think there was any special reason for no Tessa other than the SPN creators frequently violate their own canon in order to do something they think is cool, lol. Plus Tessa had come for that boy last season. But who knows.

And poor Jensen's fingernail! Ouch! Wonder what he did to his finger and if it was on-the-job injury or he was building a treehouse with Jared and smashed it with a hammer. ;-) It showed smaller signs of hurt since 5.07, so it's been a long time whatever it was. Ow!

From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
He injured his finger? I didn't know about that! Which scenes was it obviously injured? I need to see that!

I wonder whether that has something to do with Dean not wearing his ring. Maybe the whole finger was swollen that he couldn't wear the ring?

Date: 2009-11-24 05:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] chloe-amethyst.livejournal.com
Here from Changing Channels. See the band aid? Click to enlarge.

Here from Abandon All Hope. Click to enlarge. The second I saw this shot I was cringing over the finger and not over Jo about to be blown to bits, lol. Anyway, the finger looks pretty swollen, so wearing the ring on the finger next to it might've been pretty uncomfortable. I remember having to stop wearing my wedding ring when I smashed my middle finger next to it once. Too swelled up and sore.

Date: 2009-11-24 05:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
Ooooh thanks! I didn't notice that at all. Maybe he accidentally slammed the car door on it? That happened to my son once and the whole finger swelled up like anything. Or maybe, like you said, the treehouse!!

But that was the middle finger, not the ring finger. Though he probably injured his ring finger as well. But I wonder why Kripke didn't say why when someone asked him why Dean wasn't wearing his ring. I think he said it's not important to the storyline or something, and he didn't elaborate further.

I got the impression "Tessa" created a body that Dean would see as harmless, non-threatening, a damsel in distress. Maybe the creepy old man look is the Reapers default look? They probably don't have much reason to change their looks unless someone is being particularly stubborn and they have to use subterfuge.

It's too bad they had to kill Tessa, but it seems that almost anyone who might be helpful to the boys gets killed off.

That's very true! Tessa, Pam, Jo and Ellen. I fear for Bobby now :/

I was so afraid Bobby was going to be one of the "fan favorites" who would be killed in that episode. I figured Ellen had to be one. But you're right, I'm going to be afraid for Bobby, every episode he's in! Well, technically they killed him in The End, but at least we didn't see it happen.

I cried too. I didn't really care for Jo much before this episode. Why do shows do that, they make you really care about a character just before they kill them off?

The guy who played Crowley, I'm trying to remember his name and I just can't think of it. He's been in a lot of shows, but off the top of my head, he's occasionally on Dollhouse as an FBI agent, was/is on Leverage as a sort of rival for Nate's position in his insurance company. He's been in a few episodes trying to catch the guys. He was also in an episode of Firefly, playing a bad guy named Badger. The one with the "very fine hat".

It's going to be about 8 weeks till the next new episode on January 21. I just read a list of the reruns, and they're running Good God Y'All, Free To Be You and Me, and The End, then skipping Fallen Idol, I Believe That Children Are Our Future and The Curious Case of Dean Winchester. There's no rerun on 12/17, and on 12/24 they're rerunning A Very Supernatural Christmas and then jump into the last few episodes, Changing Channels, The Real Ghostbusters, and Abandon All Hope.

I think episode #11, airing on 1/21, is going to be awesome. A Couple of the others I've heard about sound good, but I think that one and ep #12 will be fantastic.

I thought about that scene in City of Angels, too! There was also a sort of similar scene in an episode of Touched By An Angel, where a LOT of Angels of Death showed up, because there was going to be a terrorist act involving blowing up a building. It would be a huge job for just a few Angels of Death to take on, so there were a couple of dozen, I think.

Very intriguing episode, and I hope we'll be seeing Crowley more often!

Ruby 2.0 is an exception, right? Right? :)

Those three eps that they skipped? They're the three of my least favourite eps of season 5!

I wonder who's going to play The Angel of Death. Or whether they're going to cast anyone at all.

And yes, Crowley was awesome! I only knew him from Leverage. Man, didn't expect the show to go there when they showed him kissing that old guy! I'm hoping that that'll be a hint for another kiss that we're all hoping to see, even if it was only a chaste brotherly peck!!

Yes, I LOATHED Ruby 2.0, and even more so just seconds before the boys killed her. That was a very satisfying death scene, wasn't it?

Those three eps that they skipped? They're the three of my least favourite eps of season 5!
Me, too! The only one that seems like it might be relevant later on is IBTCAOF, and they can recap the antichrist bits briefly in the previouslies to catch people up.

I wonder who's going to play The Angel of Death. Or whether they're going to cast anyone at all.
It's an intriguing notion, isn't it? We have the Horseman Death on the devil's side, so maybe the Angel of Death should show up to balance things out. I'd love to see John Dye, who played the most frequently used Angel of Death on Touched By An Angel (and is pretty hot, too). I don't know if they're going to bother going there, though.

And yes, Crowley was awesome! I only knew him from Leverage. Man, didn't expect the show to go there when they showed him kissing that old guy! I'm hoping that that'll be a hint for another kiss that we're all hoping to see, even if it was only a chaste brotherly peck!!
It's Mark Sheppard who plays Crowley, the name finally came to me. That was an unexpected scene. So bizarre that the banker would consider selling his soul less painful than kissing a man. I mean, was he that desperate for a hot woman to kiss him that it would be the dealbreaker? I though prostitutes were a bit cheaper than sell-your-soul type rates!
Yes, I'd love it if they'd really show that! Who knows, there's a possibility something like that might happen in one of the upcoming episodes. I have no idea if it will, just that it would be a great opportunity to have a kiss between the boys without the entire incest factor.

Wake me up when it's January 21, okay? :)

Hee hee, I will!

Maybe now's the time to run a marathon for season 5: the story so far. With a few skipped episodes. God, and to think that I really, really looked forward to Curious!

I kind of want to run through the whole series again from the beginning, but where would I find the time? I do have some long weekends coming up with the holidays, but I'm not sure how much time I'll have to myself. I'll be able to catch up with Season 5 with the reruns, and I do have 'em on the fake TiVO, I just haven't felt much like watching any of this season again, with the exception of Changing Channels. Definitely certain scenes here and there, but there's no real urgency to check them for things I might have missed.

I know I must have missed some stuff in Curious, because the poker games made no sense to me, unless I was misreading some of the cards. There just seemed to be too many unexplained things there. In some cases they over-explain, and in others I think they leave too much up to the imagination instead of finishing the story they started.

I still love the show, but mainly because of the brothers, not quite so much the apocalyptic storyline. I had enough apocalypses between Buffy and Angel to last a lifetime!

The storyline per se for Curious is alright, I guess. I don't really mind when an episode doesn't touch on the general mytharc but I thought the whole execution of the whole episode was bad. It was so slow and I was bored to tears watching it :(

Dean and Bobby's interactions were usually amusing, but I did not see the purpose of the dude giving Sam VD! There must have been plenty of other ways to curse Sam that were humiliating, but in a different way.

Which is why the best way to watch an episode is to be totally unspoiled. But me watching that ep a bit late, and all those fanarts and icons of the kiss, I really thought that Dean was having a romantic interlude with Jo!

Did you notice Dean's finger as mentioned by Chloe above?

Date: 2009-11-24 08:25 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] i-o-r-h-a-e-l.livejournal.com
I watched the promos and saw the pics but the fact that they died? I had no clue. It was totally a surprise to me, too. That's why now I feel free to look at the spoilers because no matter what the episodes can still surprise me somehow. :)

Oh, yeah, Dean's finger. According to Raloria it was because of an accident when he was working out. Getting smashed by two barbles or something like that. They were being reckless when working out? Making out instead of exercising - and hit into something? :D:D:D

Date: 2009-11-24 08:41 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] layne67.livejournal.com
Or maybe they were ... fighting? Do you think that's the reason why Dean wasn't wearing his ring? That his fingers were swollen? But if so why didn't Kripke simply say that was the reason Dean wasn't wearing that ring?

Heh, I actually love the idea ( the angst! ) of them fighting, and the possible reasons on why they fought ...

But if they did fight then the possibility of the existence of those girls in their lives is bigger. :( I don't like that.

Though yeah. The angst. Heheh.

A-ha. But then, them fighting because of the girls makes the possibility of them being an item in the first place even bigger! Because if they were just friends, why should they fight at all, if you know what I mean? ;)
